Conceived by architect Rafael Viñoly—432 Park Avenue is the tallest residential skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere. This apartment designed by John Beckmann and his design firm Axis Mundi has some of the most breathtaking views in Manhattan.
Known for their glamorous low-slung aesthetic, Axis Mundi took the challenge to design the residence for an American client living in China with a family of four, and an important art collection (including the likes of Cy Twombly, Gerhard Richter, Susan Frecon, Vik Muniz and Lisette Schumacher, among others).
In the dining room, a Bocci “28 Chandelier” hangs above an intricate marble and brass table by Henge, with ceramics by John Born. Entering the main living area, a monumental “Let it Be” sectional from Poltrona Frau sits on a silver custom-designed Joseph Carini wool and silk rug. A ‘Surface” coffee table designed by Vincent Van Duysen and “Fulgens” armchairs in saddle leather by Antonio Citterio for B&B Italia create the penultimate space for entertaining.
The sensuous red library features custom-designed bookshelves in burnished brass and walnut, as a “Wing Sofa” in red velvet from Flexform floats atop a “Ponti” area rug from the Rug Company. “JJ Chairs” in Mongolian lamb fur from B&B Italia add a rock and roll swagger to the space.
The kitchen accentuates the grey marble flooring and all-white color palette, with the exception of a few light wood and marble details. A dramatic pendant in hand-burnished brass, designed by Henge, hovers above the kitchen island, while a floating marble counter spans the window opening. It is a serene spot to enjoy a morning cappuccino while pondering the ever-changing skyline of the Metropolis.
In a counterintuitive move, Beckmann decided to make the gallery dark by finishing the walls in a smoked lacquered plaster with hints of mica, which add sparkle and glitter.
John Beckmann made sure to include extravagant fabrics from Christopher Hyland and a deft mix of textures and colors to the design. In the master bedroom is a wall-length headboard system in leather and velvet panels from Poliform, with luxurious bedding from Frette. Dupre Lafon lounge chairs in a buttery leather rest on a custom golden silk carpet by Joseph Carini, while a pair of parchment bedside lamps by Jean Michel Frank complete the design.
The facade is treated with an LED lighting system which changes colors and can be controlled by the client with their iPhone from the street.

Loudoun County's Top Kitchen & Bath Designer I Best of Houzz 2014-2025

The existing master bath was functional but lacked artistry. With an eye toward maximizing the client’s budget, the existing vanities were only replaced instead of being completely redesigned. The client’s goal was to have a large shower, yet maintain space for a tub. The new expanded shower was placed where the bathtub used to be. The luxury shower features a five-head shower system, including a body spray, a rain head, and two adjustable shower heads. Custom tiled shelves and new awning windows were designed to seamlessly integrate into the geometry of the Cappuccino marble tile. Dark Emperador marble is an accent stone placed on the shelves, the wall cap, the shower seat, and the shower curb. A stone trim band adds detail around the new windows. Square footage was added to the master bath by carving out an area within the existing attic to capture space for the freestanding tub.

Once a small bedroom for a governess, now creatively converted to "Le Petit Pantry de Plumberry"
Just steps away from the Master Bedroom, Dressing Area and Atrium lies a pantry like no other! A small, yet fully functional kitchen capable of fulfilling any request or appetite!
The cherry cabinetry is finished in a beautiful French blue-grey striate with accents of walnut and adorned with polished nickel and crystal glass knobs. The extraordinary white Calacatta Romano marble countertops are reflected in the hand cut marble mosaics extending the full height of the wall providing a breathtaking moment upon entering this room.
A quick cup of fresh hot coffee, espresso or cappuccino is easily accessible as Monsieur dresses for the start of his business day. Maybe he has time to sit at the marble peninsula and enjoy the view and the fireplace as he reads the morning paper and listens to the stock and traffic news.
The refrigerator is elegantly camouflaged as an antique mirrored armoire. Inside is an undisclosed amount of cookie dough that serves to cure Madame's fervor for fresh shortbreads with her afternoon tea or a quick snack for the little one's playing in the Atrium. Simply place a few dollops of dough and place in the speed oven for just several minutes and voila.
Monsieur loves to prepare a full breakfast for his d'amour as they lounge in their chambers on a lazy morning, along with hot baked croissants, frothing lattes, and fresh berries and cream. Everything he needs is just within reach...a fully stocked refrigerator, induction cooktop, speed oven and concealed dishwasher to provide an easy clean up.

Serenity in the Kitchen. When working with an open floor plan, it’s essential to tie in these spaces with the rest of the Home. The custom metal hood becomes the star of the show, and you can be sure that each time a visitor arrives, our homeowners are offering up home made cappuccinos from their built-in Miele coffee bar. With two dishwashers and two sinks, we have created "zones" in which to work in for prep work, cleaning, cooking and storage alike. Thermador Refrigerator and Freezer columns create a tall wall for the space and accentuate the high ceilings.
The white custom shaker cabinets gave us the perfect tone to match the crown molding for the rest of the home. Soft and sophisticated bar stools play nicely against the stone countertops and Alder Wood island.
