Sometimes it seems like it's impossible to escape from the city living in Los Angeles county. This homeowner moved from a rural area straight into the heart of Los Angeles and was looking for a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the urban jungle. They wanted to ensure that their design was low maintenance so that they were free to enjoy their private outdoor space after coming home from a long day in the city.

The pictures below are just a snapshot of a lovely floor that was done with our exclusive V3 9" Character Rift & Quartered WHITE OAK Flooring. Typically with such wide planks you would be worried about eventual cupping and/or gapping with the boards but with our V3 engineered line there is no need to worry. We've successfully tested our planks up to 12" wide with no problems! To help ease your mind a little though, Schafer Hardwood guarantees your floors FOR LIFE (not that you'll need it)!

In this project the home owner was a furniture importer, so she had an amazing array of decorative elements to add to the design. After spending years traveling through Indonesia and India on buying trips, she wanted a taste of the tropics in her own back yard. We worked together to incorporate her beautiful objects into an undeniably tropical-feeling space. By carefully selecting plants and their placement, we were able to achieve the lush green feel of Bali or Hawaii in the Southern California climate without using a lot of water. After installation, this oasis is alive with birds and dragonflies. Lush green plantings create microclimates around the house that help cool the property on hot days. Integrating edible trees provides the homeowner with pomegranates, several types of guavas, lemons, limes, and bananas. Today, the homeowner rents out her home and garden for photo shoots and weddings.
