Environments by DesignOur clients live in a country club community and were looking to renovate their unfinished basement. The client knew he wanted to include a gym, theater, and gaming center.
We incorporated a Home Automation system for this project, providing for music playback, movie watching, lighting control, and security integration.
Our challenges included a short construction deadline and several structural issues. The original basement had a floor-to-ceiling height of 8’-0” with several columns running down the center of the basement that interfered with the seating area of the theater. Our design/build team installed a second beam adjacent to the original to help distribute the load, enabling the removal of columns.
The theater had a water meter projecting a foot out from the front wall. We retrofitted a piece of A/V acoustically treated furniture to hide the meter and gear.
This homeowner originally planned to include a putting green on his project, until we demonstrated a Visual Sports Golf Simulator. The ceiling height was two feet short of optimal swing height for a simulator. Our client was committed, we excavated the corner of the basement to lower the floor. To accent the space, we installed a custom mural printed on carpet, based upon a photograph from the neighboring fairway of the client’s home. By adding custom high-impact glass walls, partygoers can join in on the fun and watch the action unfold while the sports enthusiasts can view the party or ball game on TV! The Visual Sports system allows guests and family to not only enjoy golf, but also sports such as hockey, baseball, football, soccer, and basketball.
We overcame the structural and visual challenges of the space by using floor-to-glass walls, removal of columns, an interesting mural, and reflective floor surfaces. The client’s expectations were exceeded in every aspect of their project, as evidenced in their video testimonial and the fact that all trades were invited to their catered Open House! The client enjoys his golf simulator so much he had tape on five of his fingers and his wife informed us he has formed two golf leagues! Rather than fight it we leaned into it and went with a black cerused oak finish on the walls and added ambient uplighting on the amulet mist gold reflective tiles to create the illusion of mirrors and a continuation of space in the bar and gaming area. A variation of the same wood tone turns into fluted wall paneling in the adjacent room. A corner banquette forms flexible seating around a beautiful wood gaming table and artful foosball table.

The additional finished room adds a kid's area ready for years of fun. Space planning was a little challenging with bulkhead and framing out. Economical shelving added much needed accents and charging station. Game room with high end multi game table and chairs promises years of family game time. When we first encountered this basement for a family with three boys, we saw a space with untapped potential. Though previously remodeled, it lacked a cohesive design strategy. The expansive area housed various entertainment pieces (a shuffleboard table, air hockey, foosball, etc.) scattered haphazardly throughout the space.
While the basement included a workout room and a rudimentary kitchen area, it lacked a dedicated game room or proper bar. Excessive storage closets along the back wall consumed valuable real estate that could be repurposed for more engaging uses.
In essence, the basement was spacious but disjointed—functional for family use but falling short as an entertainment hub. It didn’t align with the sophistication of the rest of the home. Our clients envisioned a transformation: a fresh, organized space that would not only serve their family’s needs but also shine as an inviting arena for entertaining friends and hosting gatherings – especially sports-focused gatherings!
Design Objectives:
Reimagine the basement layout, creating distinct zones for varied activities.
Expand the workout area to accommodate new equipment, including a Smith machine.
Implement a multi-screen setup inspired by high-end sports bars, allowing guests to follow multiple games while socializing.
Enhance existing features while developing new areas:

Create an integrated bar and entertainment area
Retain and incorporate the existing projector setup

Work around immovable structural elements (soffits, load-bearing support columns)
THE RENEWED SPACE
Design Solutions:
Install a stylish barn door for the utility area of the new workout space, improving aesthetics and accessibility.
Repurpose the former workout room into a dedicated game room for kids, utilizing couches with pull-out beds so the area can double as overflow guest accommodations.
Transform the unused area into a vibrant pub-style area for card and table games.
Enhance the big screen area with elegant wainscoting and ambient theatre-style lighting.
Design a multi-functional wet bar area featuring varied seating, prep areas, and a microwave.
Base the bar sink area width off the soffit above it.
In the big screen area, use the soffit to inform the width of a wainscoting section.
For the immovable support columns, dress one up to match the wainscoting of the nearby big screen wall. Hide the other one in a new wall.
Final Thoughts:
The reimagined basement has exceeded our clients’ expectations, evolving into the ultimate entertainment hub. With seven strategically placed screens, it’s perfect for gatherings focused on major sporting events and casual gatherings, as well. The space strikes a balance between adult sophistication and family-friendly functionality, featuring distinct zones for various activities.
The new design not only maximizes functionality for modern, multi-screen entertainment but also elevates the aesthetic appeal. It integrates flawlessly with the rest of the home’s transitional style while allowing each basement section to maintain its unique character. The existing part of basement had lower ceilings, but our team was able to add additional height to the addition. This not only opened up the space but also provided ample room for innovative design ideas.
Sometimes, the layout of a space becomes apparent through practical considerations. We carefully selected the position of the TV and ping-pong table based on the layout, ensuring that the window placement wouldn’t interfere with the blue stone patio above. This thoughtfully crafted layout optimizes the functionality and flow of the space.
With the challenge of a long, narrow space, we discovered the perfect solution – a dedicated ping-pong area. It’s amazing how a game can bring the family together and add a fun and dynamic element to the lower level.
To create a visually appealing atmosphere, we incorporated a range of design elements. The colored cement floor adds a touch of uniqueness and is not only stylish but also durable. Two different tones of grass cloth wallpaper enhance the textured look of the walls, while the pine tongue and groove ceiling, combined with exposed beams, infuse warmth into the space. The six hanging pendant light fixtures serve as functional and decorative elements, creating a cozy and inviting ambiance.
This lower level addition is a testament to our ability to adapt to the unique challenges of a project and create a space that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. It’s a wonderful example of how creative solutions can transform even the most challenging spaces into areas of style and purpose.

RR RedesignBasement remodel- phase one- This space was partially finished when my clients purchased the home. Like some- it is a space they have been wanting to finish for a few years. The additional finished room adds a kid's area ready for years of fun. Space planning was a little challenging with bulkhead and framing out. Economical shelving added much needed accents and charging station. Game room with high end multi game table and chairs promises years of family game time. Grass cloth wallpaper accents the game room perfectly. The soft Sherwin Willams eucalyptus color on the walls sets the mood for the space. Phase 2 kitchenette/bar to come.
LaMantia Design and RemodelingThe previous award winning remodel of their Burr Ridge home brought these clients back to LaMantia and designers Jackie Prazak and Katie Suva, CKD, CBD when they decided it was time to build out their unfinished lower level. As before, their main objective was to create areas to accommodate their extended (and now grown) family.
During the 2013 main floor remodel, a bedroom and Powder Room had been given up to gain the large award winning kitchen, so recapturing those two spaces were high on the “list of desires.” Also on the list was the need for a pool table, a comfortable movie/TV space, lots of game storage and plenty of open area for grandchildren game playing.
The stairway into the lower level was the main challenge in this build-out; both the stair run and tread depth needed to be lengthened to perform to code. To create greater head room on the staircase the main beam was cut and a portion was relocated 18”. A second column at the end of the stair run was added to match the required structural column, allowing the last tread to wrap decoratively onto each side.
Throughout the design planning many details built-into the main level project were repeated to marry the main and lower levels together. The built-in cabinetry and the mirrored doors in the bedroom can also be found in the Guest Room on the main level. The mirrored element over the bed is actually an interior door glazed with mirrors and hung on its side. The parquet look tile flooring of the new bath is reminiscent of the main level wood parquet flooring while the carpenter built wainscoting also can be found in the main hall of the first floor.
The custom walnut stair spindles were fabricated from a photo the homeowner found and loved. In the Movie/TV area the theatre seats are fully powered to accept iPhones, iPads, Laptops, etc. Also note the large chalkboard scorekeeping area with seating for the game players. And, one very special detail can be found under the (now longer) staircase; a private room under the stairs was created with touch-lighting and bean bag chairs for anyone seeking a quiet space.
