Getting more use out of their covered porch throughout the year is exactly what these Elgin, SC, homeowners listed as their primary objective when they contacted us. They already had a beautiful covered porch area in which many celebrations, cookouts, parties and family dinners had occurred throughout the spring and summer months as well as countless evenings spent just relaxing and unwinding after a hard day of work. Although this space is obviously well-loved during the spring and summer, they also want to enjoy it during the fall and winter too.
The best way to accomplish their goal was with the addition of an outdoor heat source, such as a fire pit or a fireplace. What’s better than an outdoor fireplace or fire pit to gather around and share conversation, food, drinks and fun? Not only will a fire feature add some warmth to the chilly air, it will also serve as a social hub and focal point for your outdoor living space. After an onsite inspection of their existing structure and careful consideration of their wants and needs along with the architectural aesthetics of the covered porch, we suggested the addition of an wood-burning outdoor fireplace with an Isokern pumice stone insert.
Find the right local pro for your project

This home had a very large backyard and needed a total refresh. They were having a pool installed and wanted to also add an outdoor living room complete with a kitchen, fireplace and dining area.
The new covered patio is right at 765 SF and is attached to the garage and the back of the home – removing the long breezeway that was there. The space is split with the double-sided fireplace creating 2 separate areas. Both sides have room for lounging around by the fire. The larger side has the dining table and bar area. While the other side is the outdoor kitchen.
The outdoor kitchen is equipped with RCS appliances – a grill, fridge, doors and drawers for storage. The granite is Black Pearl from Daltile. All of the stone on the fascia of the kitchen, fireplace and half-column is Autumn Blend Chop thin veneers from Alamo Stone. The vaulted ceiling is West Coast IPA pre-stained tongue and groove by Woodtone. There is a Bromic heater installed for keeping the space nice and comfortable on chilly days and evenings. The outdoor living space is equipped with speakers in the ceiling.
This outdoor living area completely changed the backyard.

We were contacted in the early spring to help this client come up with a functional outdoor living space. We created multiple rooms, off the back doors is the outdoor kitchen complete with ample prep and cooking space as well as space to sit, eat and mingle. The pergola completes and defines the outdoor living room with the lighting, ceiling fan, drapes and furniture. On the opposite side is the lounge area with the fire feature where everyone can hang out, chill and keep warm on the chilly nights. The central part of the patio is the main dinning area and can also be used for high tops for larger events and gatherings. The lighting provides the finishing touch to this wonderful project.

Nestled into the side of a mountain in the foothills west of Fort Collins CO, this home gives mountain views a whole new meaning.
To achieve the homeowners’ desire for floor-to-ceiling windows in just about every room, we started by constructing a steel superstructure anchored to the granite bedrock. And then we basically filled it with wood and windows.
Speaking of windows, huge sliding windows open up the kitchen to the covered outdoor kitchen, blurring the lines between indoors and out. Upstairs, the observation deck accesses the same view, only from above the pines.
On the practical side, the exterior and interior wood lap and tile siding, with local stone accents, are both Nichiha brand products made from fiber cement. Nichiha siding is both fire resistant and weather resistant to give the homeowners peace of mind in the Colorado Front Range’s dry, sometimes challenging, climate.
Similarly, the tongue-and-groove ceiling and soffit woodwork is Pakari, a wood product made by thermally modifying (i.e., baking) wood to make it more durable and fire resistant as well.
The ballasted roof, accented by custom metal facia and built to handle the load from wet spring snows, also reduces the opportunity for flying embers to snag should a wildfire erupt near the home.
This grand home isn’t without comforts, either. In-floor radiant heat keeps it toasty when it’s chilly out, and an EPA-approved wood-burning fireplace provides warmth and ambiance without nasty emissions. A full home automation system senses motion and turns on the lights as one progresses from room to room. And the two home offices make use of custom built-in desks and storage to frame the view. Who needs artwork?

Chilly spring weather makes the perfect occasion to gather round the firepit with friends and family!
This gas-burning firepit was built with mortarted limestone and sits atop a beautiful Urbana patio. The Courtstone and Copthorne detail provide contrast and visual interest to an already-stunning property.
