The gorgeous coffered ceiling and crisp wainscoting are highlights of this lovely new home in Historic Houston, TX. The stately chandelier and relaxed woven shades set the stage for this lovely dining table and chairs. The natural light in this home make every room warm and inviting.

The theater scope included both a projection system and a multi-TV video wall. The projection system is an Epson 1080p projector on a Stewart Cima motorized screen. To achieve the homeowner’s requirement to switch between one large video program and five smaller displays for sports viewing. The smaller displays are comprised of a 75” Samsung 4K smart TV flanked by two 50” Samsung 4K displays on each side for a total of 5 possible independent video programs. These smart TVs and the projection system video are managed through a Control4 touchscreen and video routing is achieved through an Atlona 4K HDMI switching system. Unlike the client’s 7.1 theater at his primary residence, the hunting lodge theater was to be a Dolby Atmos 7.1.2 system. The speaker system was to be a Bowers & Wilkins CT7 system for the main speakers and use CI600 series for surround and Atmos speakers. CT7 15” subwoofers with matched amplifier were selected to bring a level of bass response to the room that the client had not experienced in his primary residence. The CT speaker system and subwoofers were concealed with a false front wall and concealed behind acoustically transparent cloth. Some degree of wall treatment was required but the budget would not allow for a typical snap-track track installation or acoustical analysis. A one-inch absorption panel system was designed for the room and custom trim and room design allowed for stock size panels to be used with minimum custom cuts, allowing for a room to get some treatment in a budget that would normally afford none. Both the equipment rack and the projector are concealed in a storage room at the back of the theater. The projector is installed into a custom enclosure with a CAV designed and built port-glass window into the theater.

This 1826 Beacon Hill single-family townhouse received upgrades that were seamlessly integrated into the reproduction Georgian-period interior. feature ceiling exposing the existing rough-hewn timbers of the floor above, and custom-sawn black walnut flooring. Circulation for the new master suite was created by a rotunda element, incorporating arched openings through curving walls to access the different program areas. The client’s antique Chinese screen panels were incorporated into new custom closet casework doors, and all new partitions and casework were blended expertly into the existing wainscot and moldings.

The King’s Hill Residence is also known as the WR Mackenzie Residence and is on the National Register of Historic Places and located in the historic King’s Hill neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. The home is a classic architectural example of the Federal Style, designed by the prominent Portland architectural firm of the day, Whidden and Lewis. Prior to being placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1978, the house had undergone a significant two-story addition on it’s SW side and a few unfortunate interior renovations. The house felt dark, dreary and mostly disregarded on the interior. My client, relocating from Northern California, fell in love with Portland and had been looking for a home that was within walking distance of all of Portland’s finest amenities - Downtown, Northwest 23rd, the Pearl District and Washington Park. They purchased the home with the vision of lovingly restoring it while also respectfully renovating the interior to support the needs of a modern family. The house is approximately 6000 square feet with three stories of living space and a previously unfinished basement. The main level has a traditional formal Entry Foyer with flanking Dining Room and Living Room at the front of the house with a Library, Family Room, Kitchen and original Butler’s Pantry located on the west side of the main level. The second level includes a Master Suite, Sun Room, Dressing Room and two guest rooms with shared guest bath. The third level, originally the servant’s quarters, were mostly unfinished and in disrepair, as was the basement. With the client’s program and functional needs defined, Katy began the design process by studying a wide range of floor plan options for all three levels while also focussing on retaining, enhancing and also restoring the historic character and details of the home. Once the floor plans had been refined Katy, working closely with her client, designed, selected and specified the palette of interior materials, cabinetry, architectural details, lighting, hardware and windowcoverings throughout the home. All of the systems incuding HVAC, plumbing, electrical and structural were also replaced throughout the home. The house is currently under construction and set for completion Spring 2019. Strategically angled on the site, this custom home (located near Park City, UT) maximizes the views from every room on the west side of the house. Balancing HOA requirements with client programming desires can present challenges, but the Architect provides solutions that both satisfy HOA design guidelines and client wishes... all within the client's budget.

High up on a bluff overlooking Wellfleet Harbor and the Cape Cod National Seashore we designed the clients program to include – swimming pool, spa, outdoor kitchen and bar area, multiple fire features, outdoor shower, and a relaxing lounge area protected from the elements. We were responsible for strategically navigating through a complex permitting process including conservation. We also had the pleasure of working with a dynamite team of subcontractors for the electrical, lighting and pool installation.

The conception of the Montrose Garage project, driven by the site and the client’s program, became a lynchpin on the site by reorganizing movement around it. The building, echoing the contemporary materials and aesthetic of the primary residence, is the northern boundary of a courtyard creating the built edge of this urban lot. The garage structure could be characterized as an “Eroded Shed”. With a simple sloped roof, site influences and program requirements strategically carve away at the basic rectangular volume, creating dynamic architecture. The project is located on a tight site on a residential block with an alley at the northern edge of the property. To maximize access and convenience for the client, the project created vehicular access at two points on the site, through the main driveway at the south side and through the alleyway. The “Truck Port” allows vehicular access from both sides of the site. Sliding barn doors open up to the deck/courtyard during parties and social gatherings, and a sitting porch at the exercise studio opens to a beautiful view of the surrounding mountain landscape. The clients' program was brief: "Light, please". The existing layout of this 30 year old, generous 3300 square foot residence isolated the kitchen and dining rooms, and the dark cabinetry and imposing structure reinforced that sense of separation.

Large pocketing sliding doors disappear when open, to effortlessly blend the main interior living spaces with the outdoor patios. The stone spine wall runs from the exterior through the home, housing two different fireplaces that can be enjoyed indoors and out. Because the clients work from home, the plan was outfitted with two offices that provide bright and calm work spaces separate from the main living area. The interior of the home features a floating glass stair, a glass entry tower and two master decks outfitted with a hot tub and outdoor shower. Through working closely with the landscape architect, this rather contemporary home blends into the site to maximize the beauty of the surrounding rural area.

Allen Ross Architecture was hired to design a new retreat center that includes a multi-purpose Party Barn with a 3/4 basketball court, guest house, pool, sports field, tennis court, adventure course, outdoor kitchen, and changing cabana. Careful thought was given to the component relationships and how one moves through the site. Elements were configured to address function, aesthetics, security, and safety. Code mandated pool enclosure requirements were met without blocking views and without enclosure fencing. Adjacent wetlands, storm water management requirements, and multiple zoning limitations necessitated thoughtful permitting applications. Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Board approvals were required. Extensive infrastructure improvements and property grading were needed to meet the regulatory and client program requirements. The design intent was a crisp transitional style that is sympathetic with the Georgian buildings located elsewhere on the site. Timber trusses support the guest house roof and steel moment frames support the barn roof.

TYPE:FLAT RENOVATION LOCATION: ROME, VIALE PARIOLI PROGRAM: 60 m² DESIGN: 2013 COMPLETED: 2014 This interior design work is located in a building that was once a social housing unit and is now fronting one of the most elegant streets in Rome. The “Ante Operam” situation of the flat was therefore inadeguate to the client’s desires. The main operation was to invert what was living space with the bedroom. During the renovation of the new living room, an old wooden roof was found on the top of the old ceiling: it was restored and painted in white. The lamp is the famous “Arco” by Achille Castiglioni, the applique is the “Tolomeo” by Michele De Lucchi.
