A Great Answer to a Bad Design

The new owners were looking forward to living in their new home with an open floor plan, tall vaulted ceilings, and great views. It featured a large Great Room with two big French Doors separating the Dining Room from the Master Bedroom. But after only a few months they identified a major design flaw: Each of the French Doors had ten glass windows with two large windows above each door. (Check out our before and after designs, traffic flow diagrams and photos of this project.) Glass windows and doors allowed sound and light from guests or the TV in the great room to easily sneak into the bedroom. With unique work and sleep schedules (he’s a pilot, she’s a registered nurse) this design wasn’t working. Then there was a traffic flow design flaw: The Master Bedroom had a second entrance from a hallway. To get into the bedroom from the hallway you needed to walk down another claustrophobic hallway. To get from the Master Bedroom to the Master Bath begin at the most remote corner of the bedroom and down a hallway between two closets. Once inside the bath, a huge triangular Jacuzzi dominating the space. So, from a privacy and traffic flow perspective, this home had some major design issues. When Craig Weber first met with the owners, he listened to their ideas and concerns. The owners trusted Craig to come up with the most efficient and most effective solution to this design dilemma. He offered a solution that resolved the bed-bath traffic flow problem, offered some bedroom room privacy, and updated the bath. First, the two French Doors and windows were removed. A new wall was built with sound-absorbing materials, making the Great Room and Dining Room more comfortable spaces for entertaining while creating the bedroom privacy the owners craved. Solving the Bedroom/Bath traffic flow problem began with removing the two existing closets. The bath door was relocated next to the hall entrance, and then a new walk-in closet was added adjacent to the hallway entrance. The solution offered easy access to and from the bath, closet and hallway without a hint of claustrophobia. The Master Bath underwent a major transformation designed for convenience and comfort – especially during long, cold Minnesota winters. Most everything from the former bath was torn out, beginning with the giant Jacuzzi. A new bathtub that is wider and deeper than the standard size was installed with brushed Nickel fixtures. It’s the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine and candles. Warm floors are a Minnesota “must have.” The bath’s new ceramic floor features in-floor electric heat. Getting in and out of the tub is easy and comfortable. The new walk-in shower again features in-floor heating and a place to sit. The most interesting feature of this shower may the custom ceramic tile installed with unique patterns. A new vanity Cambria Bradshaw countertops features two under-hung ceramic sinks with matching brushed Nickel fixtures. Tall ceilings and three glass windows near the ceiling flood the room with natural light. A new energy-efficient window frames an ornamental stained glass window created by the owner’s father – a great personal touch. A quiet place to sleep. A private dining room for entertaining. A Master Bath to die for. And easy traffic flow. The owners couldn’t have been more delighted with the outcome. And Lilly, their cat, loves it too.

Comfortable, practical, light and cozy energy were the criteria that we worked with for this luscious, tropical home. An outdoor space you could be at ease in, never forgetting the four dogs and kids to cater for. It exudes personality, a chilled vibe reflecting the family and their lifestyle. The design features a tight selection of complementary hues which were to remain consistent throughout the house and mirrored in the outdoor rattan furniture, with the use of plenty of white – we’re talking white walls, natural wood (the real deal) and ceilings, with pops of blue in the shutters and accessories. The owners wanted elegant, refined, and quirky all at once, utilizing a highly desirable and useful space for parties and we are talking “large events”; the furniture could be taken apart and scattered effortlessly in and around the terrace and garden to make smaller pods to spread out the crowds comfortably whilst offering a relaxed corner to have more intimate chats away from the larger crowds or small intimate family gatherings; where tables were created to offer small intimate pod, but at the drop of a hat, could be joined together to make space for a larger family dinner.

Our clients work tirelessly each day managing professional and amateur jumper horses at CMJ Sporthorse. They deserve a sanctuary to return to—one filled with comfort and relaxation. With that in mind, we designed a home that offers just that. Upon entering from the garage, you’re welcomed by a beautifully crafted mudroom, featuring ample storage and a built-in bench for unloading after a long day. As you continue down the hallway, you’ll find a cozy bedroom, where a stone feature wall brings the serenity of nature indoors. In the primary bathroom, a soaking tub offers a perfect spot to unwind, with peaceful views of sprawling farmland, or a quick shower for convenience. The home is also a space for entertaining family and friends, and we believe the kitchen is the heart of it all. With an open-concept layout, the kitchen flows seamlessly into the living room, creating the perfect space for gathering. Guests are greeted at the entry with mosaic tile flooring, elegant wallpaper, striking light fixtures, and plenty of storage. The kitchen and living room are immediately visible, showcasing spectacular features like vaulted ceilings with wood beams, a custom fireplace, rich furnishings, a kitchen designed by SCR with a one-of-a-kind hood, and stunning light fixtures—especially the showstopper above the dining table. Throughout the home, custom hickory wood floors are complemented by accent rugs to soften each room. Every material was carefully selected to create a luxurious, rich atmosphere throughout the entire space.

Stanford Mid-Century Modern Remodel Addition

The Roger Lee designed house from 1962 was purchased by the current homeowners in almost original condition, as the previous owners elected to defer most maintenance projects over the years. The clients were able to see beyond the dated materials and finishes, single-paned glass and uninsulated walls and they approached Klopf Architecture to help them expand and update the entire home, one the family could settle into and enjoy for years to come. It was important that the new designs were aligned with Lee's original intent not only because of the client's appreciation for mid-century modern architecture, but also because the house was deemed historical. The Stanford Real Estate Office requires a stringent design review which safeguards the integrity of the community, which Klopf Architecture was happy to oblige going into their updated designs. As with many original mid-century modern homes, the house was scaled to the 1960s lifestyle where rooms were smaller and openings to views were limited and tightly framed. The original conditions defined the direction the family of four would take in updating the house and making it comfortable for their modern lifestyle. Klopf designed a full gut remodel and major addition to bring the house into the 21st century and provide the living area needed for the client's family. The newly expanded house added just about 1,100 sf to create an airy, comfortable and family friendly house, taking full advantage of the beautiful southwestern views that extend out to the hills beyond. The enclosed garage created an additional 240 sf of covered space for long-term storage. A cracked swimming pool created an eyesore taking up a majority of the backyard landscape, so it was one of the first elements to go during the transformation. Working with Outer Space Landscape Architects, the family asked for a mix of relaxing outdoor patio spaces that eventually blend into the native landscaping, extending their views outward toward the natural greenery of the trees beyond their property. Filling in the old pool was a smart way to expand the living spaces outward. The orientation of the house was designed to enjoy the views, but the original architecture provided the first homeowners with mere glimpses of the landscape outside. Klopf was able to broaden those views, continuing and extending on the original architecture to take full advantage of the unobstructed natural views across the rear facade of the house. Small horizontal openings in the primary bedroom and office were replaced with much taller windows that now follow the angled roof line upward, extending across almost all of the facade. We worked with Western Windows, whose designs included an oblique-shaped, operable casement that allowed our design to rise with the slope. A new corner office added to the primary suite, offers a bright and functional work-from-home solution that looks out at the distant views and added natural light from the expanded window configuration that now wraps around the corner. The existing lower level was designed by Lee as a utilitarian space, serving as a wet pool room with a drain in the center of the floor, bathroom, laundry and storage areas. Without the need for a pool room, Klopf was able to convert the area into a much more comfortable and functional living space with a new family room and guest suite. The new spaces enjoy easy access to a new outdoor patio through floor to ceiling, full-width glass sliders. Continuing along the rear facade, a previously exposed deck extending from the living room and hallway provided access to the backyard through a single set of stairs leading toward the side of the house which made sense when the pool was in place. The new deck was re-envisioned as an extension of the main living room and now serves as a second outdoor living room. A new slatted pergola above provides the homeowners welcome relief from the hot afternoon sun. A second set of stairs now creates a better connection to the redesigned lower level. Klopf was able to reconfigure the spaces, extending the living room outward toward the views, where the family now claims it as the heart of the home, spending a large majority of their time outdoors. Back inside, the original wood-burning Malm fireplace was beautifully restored and a gas burner installed to comply with California's strict air standards. It now rests in front of a wall of Heath accent tiles where a dated red brick wall used to stand. A new taller window brings more light and views into the refreshed interior living room. The original glass doors opposite the fireplace were replaced by larger sliders that when fully opened, create a seamless transition to the new outdoor living area so the two spaces feel like one connected space. The original utilitarian kitchen was needlessly tucked into the far back corner and closed-off, out of sight from the living room, so the clients asked Klopf to open it up and expand the kitchen forward so it felt more connected. Today the much larger kitchen is connected to the living area where a short wall with a cutout offers a visual glimpse into the kitchen and a handy pass-through counter for serving guests. A new breakfast nook was also added to create another spot where the family can gather for casual meals. Just outside, a new built-in outdoor grill and prep area extends the kitchen outside and connects to a new outdoor dining spot nestled amongst the trees, taking advantage of the views out back. Klopf was able to expand the other two bedrooms, add a new laundry room and half-bath and convert the carport to an enclosed garage to add more storage areas which was lost when the pool house was converted to the family and guest room. To maintain a historical connection to the original designs, the exterior siding was repeated on all exterior walls, a full-height stained glass window at the front entryway restored, and an interior slatted screen element repeated outside at the exterior entry courtyard and over the new outdoor living room to create a shade trellis. The new house stands proudly and shines against it's new landscaping features, while respecting and expanding on the original intent of Roger Lee's designs epitomizing the comforts of indoor-outdoor living in Northern California. Carl's outdated master bathroom needed a functional upgrade with a modern aesthetic. His primary focus was the cramped shower and bulky bathtub, which took up valuable space but offered limited utility. By removing the old shower and tub, we completely transformed his bathroom into a spa-like retreat with a custom-designed shower area that offers both style and comfort. The remodel opened up the bathroom by removing the old tub and expanding the shower. Featuring a herringbone tile pattern in Blu Notte Polished 3x16, the new shower walls stand out with their bold, polished finish. A pony wall was added for enhanced privacy. The custom-built bench in the new dry-off area integrates seamlessly with the shower design, bringing additional comfort and functionality. Frameless glass supported by brushed nickel clips enhances the clean, modern aesthetic, allowing light to flow freely through the room. Snow White hex tiles on the shower floor provide a timeless appearance while offering practical slip resistance. Complementing the design, the pony wall and bench in the dry-off area are finished with Super White tile, creating a seamless and harmonious look throughout the space. Carl's bathroom is now a modern, functional retreat with sleek finishes and a spacious custom shower, offering luxury and comfort.
