How amazing is this #reclaimed #brick used as #flooring?! These "Dark Pink" #Chicago common #bricks add warmth and #rustic, #oldworld charm to this #contemporary #residence in #Nashville's Hillwood neighborhood. Homeowner Lee and his wife reviewed three different batches of #masonry before settling on the creamy pinks and beiges of this lot #salvaged from a #demolition site just down the road from our Kedzie yard. It's always fun to work with a #construction professionals on their own #homes — having seen and worked on hundreds of projects themselves, they're creative, patient, detail-oriented, and really appreciate unique and well-made materials! Designer Emily Haraf of @eh_interiors came up with the #innovative choice of #floor #tile, which continues up and around the main #fireplace to accent the #hearth's #herringbone pattern of white fire brick. We also love the way she used pink cabinets and quirky #wallpaper to play off the colors of the #brick inside the #powderroom. The client’s coastal New England roots inspired this Shingle style design for a lakefront lot. With a background in interior design, her ideas strongly influenced the process, presenting both challenge and reward in executing her exact vision. Vintage coastal style grounds a thoroughly modern open floor plan, designed to house a busy family with three active children. A primary focus was the kitchen, and more importantly, the butler’s pantry tucked behind it. Flowing logically from the garage entry and mudroom, and with two access points from the main kitchen, it fulfills the utilitarian functions of storage and prep, leaving the main kitchen free to shine as an integral part of the open living area. Mumford & Wood has designed and manufactured beautiful windows and doors for Kylemore House on the Coombe Estate, Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. This is an exclusive 9,000 sq ft new-build house which has recently been awarded winner of the ‘Best Out of London Home’ and runner-up of the ‘Best Luxury Home’ at the 2014 Evening Standard New Homes Awards. Situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty Coombe Park is within 10 minutes of Wimbledon Village, the Common and Richmond Park. Designed by Hoban Design, Kingston upon Thames (www.hobandesign.co.uk) for main contractor Epsom Builders, a family run business in Surrey, the property has been designed to achieve the highest levels of energy efficiency with an ‘A’ EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) Energy Rating and Code 4 Sustainable Homes. Kylemore is one of only 0.01% of homes built to achieve this standard in England.

The Control/Shift House is perched on the high side of the site which takes advantage of the view to the southeast. A gradual descending path navigates the change in terrain from the street to the entry of the house. A series of low retaining walls/planter beds gather and release the earth upon the descent resulting in a fairly flat level for the house to sit on the top one third of the site. The entry axis is aligned with the celebrated stair volume and then re-centers on the actual entry axis once you approach the forecourt of the house. The initial desire was for an “H” scheme house with common entertaining spaces bridging the gap between the more private spaces. After an investigation considering the site, program, and view, a key move was made: unfold the east wing of the “H” scheme to open all rooms to the southeast view resulting in a “T” scheme. The new derivation allows for both a swim pool which is on axis with the entry and main gathering space and a lap pool which occurs on the cross axis extending along the lengthy edge of the master suite, providing direct access for morning exercise and a view of the water throughout the day. The Control/Shift House was derived from a clever way of following the “rules.” Strict HOA guidelines required very specific exterior massing restrictions which limits the lengths of unbroken elevations and promotes varying sizes of masses. The solution most often used in this neighborhood is one of addition - an aggregation of masses and program randomly attached to the inner core of the house which often results in a parasitic plan. The approach taken with the Control/Shift House was to push and pull program/massing to delineate and define the layout of the house. Massing is intentional and reiterated by the careful selection of materiality that tracks through the house. Voids and relief in the plan are a natural result of this method and allow for light and air to circulate throughout every space of the house, even into the most inner core.
