Kansas City Brick & Masonry is the craft of shaping rough pieces of rock into accurate geometrical shapes, at times simple, but some of considerable complexity, and then arranging the resulting stones, often together with mortar, to form structures. Quarrymen split veins, or sheets of rock, and extract the resulting blocks of stone from the ground. Sawyers cut these rough blocks into cuboids, to required size with diamond-tipped saws. The resulting block if ordered for a specific component is known as sawn six sides (SSS). Banker masons are workshop based, and specialize in working the stones into the shapes required by a building's design, this set out on templets and a bed mould. They can produce anything from stones with simple chamfers to tracery windows, detailed mouldings and the more classical architectural building masonry. When working a stone from a sawn block, the mason ensures that the stone is bedded in the right way, so the finished work sits in the building in the same orientation as it was formed on the ground. Occasionally though some stones need to be orientated correctly for the application; this includes voussoirs, jambs, coping sand cornice. The basic tools, methods and skills of the banker mason have existed as a trade for thousands of years. Carvers cross the line from craft to art, and use their artistic ability to carve stone into foliage, figures, animals or abstract designs. Fixer masons specialize in the fixing of stones onto buildings, using lifting tackle, and traditional lime mortars and grouts. Sometimes modern cements, mastics and epoxy resins are used, usually on specialist applications such as stone cladding. Metal fixings, from simple dowels and cramps to specialised single application fixings, are also used. The precise tolerances necessary make this a highly skilled job. Memorial masons or monumental masons carve gravestones and inscriptions. The modern stonemason undergoes comprehensive training, both in the classroom and in the working environment. Hands-on skill is complemented by intimate knowledge of each stone type, its application and best uses, and how to work and fix each stone in place. The mason may be skilled and competent to carry out one or all of the various branches of stonemasonry. In some areas the trend is towards specialization, in other areas towards adaptability.

This modern fire and ice interpretation was designed to showcase the native environment and its integration with the distinctive neo-classic architecture of this new home. This property is located in a southeast suburb of Michigan, Canton. A natural ravine sits at the back of the home creating magnificent views of the Washtenaw watershed. The fall colors are amazing with Hickory golds and vibrant Maple reds ablaze. The client had been to numerous design centers and displays to research what they wanted to create in their backyard. They were interested in an outdoor fireplace and cook center with a bar. Our initial consultation provided them with some other options that would not be obtrusive to their magnificent vistas. The cook center and bar evolved into a smaller counter space and fire feature coffee table. The design process started with a clean canvas. It progressed into a formal design that provided modern conveniences and an outdoor living space. The client was presented with a concept drawing on the second visit as a starting off point and they agreed to proceed with a design fee to bring that concept into fruition. The formal landscape elements close to the residence contrast the natural surroundings. The result: tremendous interest created by the tension of the formal hardscape against dramatic vistas of the ravine which appears endless. We created four defined areas within the patio space: dining, cooking, coffee table conversation area and a fire wall relaxation terrace. The relaxation terrace was elevated so that it could be viewed and enjoyed from both inside and out. The cook center was installed around the owners existing grill with the potential for a future, more permanent unit. Area rug patterns were designed within the paver field to soften and define spaces. During installation, clay loam soils were discovered. This slowed down he base preparation, drain tile installation, and running of utilities. These non native soils are common in new construction sites. The business development associate oversaw the entire process along with the team leader. Caution was also taken to preserve a Shagbark Hickory close to the newly installed walkway. The largest challenge of this project was the fabrication of the burners to provide a dramatic flame. These burners were custom made and installed to provide the homeowners with the climactic effects they were looking for. An intensive drainage system was installed to accommodate a water issue in the rear yard but to also be cognizant of the native surroundings and ravine. Overall, an environment was created that was reminiscent of the homeowner’s favorite après ski, sitting next to an open fire after a long descent to the base of the Rockies. The end result not only thrilled the owner but the Canton community as well. Since the installation, the Village of Canton has asked us to present these fire features at their home show.

A complete outdoor living environment designed and built for a lakefront property in Northeast Ohio, where the water view had to remain the organizing element of the entire space. The plan is built around a multi-level paver patio set on a concrete base — a construction method that holds line and elevation through freeze-thaw cycles rather than settling over time. Curved steps with integrated riser lighting connect the upper terrace to the lower patio, and a seat wall with column piers defines the transition without closing off the view. A motorized pergola anchors the upper level, positioned against the home and detailed to match its lines. Beneath it, a full outdoor kitchen with stainless appliances sits under cover, with a lounge area alongside it. The lower terrace carries a gas fire pit and seating, oriented so the lake stays in view from every position. The in-ground pool was set into the grade between the patio and the lawn, with paver coping and surround carried through in the same material palette so the pool reads as part of the environment rather than a separate installation. We teamed up with Atlantis Marine World to transform an intimate area alongside the aquarium into a stunning butterfly garden. By designing and installing a mini-ecosystem for an array of plants and butterflies, this interactive indoor area for learning and exploration now complements their invaluable community offerings. Stone pathways welcome guests to wind around throughout the diverse foliage, and sends each visitor into the world of the butterfly’s natural environment.

Studio Terrain’s landscape design was crafted to complement this beautifully remodeled double A-frame Eichler home located in Castro Valley. We aimed to preserve the iconic style of the home while enhancing the functionality and aesthetics of the outdoor spaces. The home’s mid-century modern architecture was originally designed by renowned architects Claude Oakland and Jones & Emmons. These architects designed roughly 185 homes on the hillside community capturing beautiful views and further elevating the landscape connection to its surroundings. Drawing inspiration from mid-century modern design principles, we emphasized clean lines, simplicity, and a strong indoor-outdoor connection. The outdoor space features multiple decks, patios, a gas fire pit, and a built-in gas BBQ, all thoughtfully integrated to align with the architectural style of the home. The spacious lawn and outdoor living areas offer versatile spaces for relaxation and entertaining, framed by panoramic bay views and stunning sunsets. Our design approach respected the home’s original character, seamlessly blending modern elements with Eichler’s architectural vision. By maintaining open sightlines and a fluid transition between interior and exterior spaces, we created an outdoor environment that enhances the home's aesthetic and provides a serene retreat.

The upholstered booths, framed in warm modern wood paneling, provide a more intimate setting for conversation and casual dining, while maintaining visual connection to the larger open-concept lounge. In the background, the main common area unfolds with its generous seating arrangement, layered textures, and expansive windows that fill the space with natural light.
