Inspiration for a contemporary pool remodel in Orange County

This rustic gem is handcrafted from recycled copper and reclaimed wood from Mexico. The rich colors of red, brown, orange, and black in the copper are a function of the specific temperature of the fire used to heat the copper. The colors are random – each piece is truly unique as no two pieces turn out exactly alike. Copper has rarely been used in the construction of furniture in the past, but innovation and vision resulted in the creation of this original copper furniture line from Mexico. Besides being an aesthetically pleasing recycled earth-friendly material, copper is also known to be antibacterial and inhibits the growth of microbes, thus providing a measure of protection against the presence and spread of harmful germs and bacteria. A combination of new and old reclaimed pine salvaged from old buildings is used because it adds further character and uniqueness to our furniture line. Various construction methods, including free-floating wood panels, are employed to minimize the potential for cracking and warping. All drawers employ wood runners, so they do not drop when opened; and metal drawer glides are available upon request ($15 up-charge/drawer). The dark wood finish is a five-step process which involves wood stains, a dark glaze, and two coats of clear coat lacquer. This finish is much more durable, water resistant, and maintenance free compared to the light hand-rubbed wax finish. It is the most popular and most commonly specified wood finish; and it is the default finish applied to orders unless otherwise specified by the customer. Touch-ups are quick and easy using Briwax Tudor Brown color tone or darker – wipe it on and wipe it off.

Scott and Deneen Knisely built their handcrafted log home in Lock Haven Pennsylvania with hope to preserve a piece of their community’s history. In 2002, the Kniselys lived near a 20-acre property that included the Rocky Point Lodge, a locally known log house dating back more than 70 years. The building was serving as a restaurant at the time, but had taken on many roles over the years—first, and most notably, as a Boy Scout camp. When Scott heard a rumor that the property might be going on the market, he had a word with the owner, expressing his interest in buying it. Six weeks later, the acreage was his. “We loved the property and the building,” says Deneen, “but it was too damaged to be saved.” So they got to work researching companies to build the new home that would replace the old one. Since so many local people have fond childhood memories of time spent at the lodge, the Kniselys decided that the new structure should resemble the old one as closely as possible, so they looked for a design that would use the same footprint as the original. After a quick trip to Virginia to look at an existing house, they chose a modified version of the “Robinson,” a 3,750-square-foot plan by Hearthstone Inc. “When the house was being built, I researched things such as period molding depth, wainscoting height and the look of the floors,” says Deneen. Hearthstone even had the logs sandblasted to give them a weathered look. “We just love the rustic, warm feeling of a log home,” Deneen adds. “No other home compares.” The home is made from large-diameter eastern white pine in a profile from the Bob Timberlake series. “The log is sawn on two sides, then hand-hewn to a 6-inch thickness with varying heights,” says Ernie. To top off the home’s vintage look, Pat Woody of Lynchburg, Virginia, got to work on the chinking. Pat specializes in period reproductions and historical homes. The variations in the chinking are the perfect finishing touch to bring home the 19th-century flavor the Kniselys desired.

This under-stair wine cellar presented several design challenges. Chief amongst which: how to avoid making this cramped, dark space feel like an afterthought compared to the grandeur of the rest of the home. The design team at Architectural Plastics quickly came up with a solution. A series of stepped height, clear acrylic wine racks offered maximum storage for the multi-level ceiling. Tenuous link I know but I worked on this semi riven Black Brazilian Slate Tiles in the kitchen and dining room of a house in the seaside town of Thornton-Cleveleys around the time of the Rio Olympics. I love working on Slate as although it’s appearance can degrade without proper maintenance due to a build-up of dirt I knew they would look fantastic by the time I had finished. The tile itself had lost its rich black colour and the grout lines had become stained, leaving the floor as a whole looking very unattractive. Out of interest honed Slate has a smooth, refined texture whereas the riven Slate has a rougher, more natural texture, and this can make it more difficult to keep clean. Needless to say, the customer was keen to have the tiles restored to looking their best. To restore the appearance of the Slate, I cleaned the floor and removed what remained of the old sealer off using Tile Doctor Remove and Go. This was scrubbed into the floor using a scrubbing pad fitted to a rotary machine. The floor was then rinsed with water, and the process repeated where necessary to tackle particularly stubborn areas of dirt. As mentioned previously, the grout lines were in a particularly bad state, and would need special cleaning attention. I cleaned carefully with a strong 5-to-1 dilution of Tile Doctor Pro Clean with water, which is our high alkaline cleaner. The cleaning solution was scrubbed I’m using a stiff handheld grout brush, with the grout lines looking immediately cleaner. When I was satisfied that the grout lines had been restored to the best possible condition, I gave the floor a thorough rinse using the wet pickup function of a wet wax machine to get the floor as dry as possible and then left the whole floor to dry off overnight. Upon my return to the property I ran some quick damp tests to check that the floor was completely dry. This is important as any excess moisture would have prevented me from sealing the tiles, since it can cloud the sealer and damage it performance. Previously I discussed sealer options with the customer and they stated that they would prefer a Satin finish, so I applied a sealer called Tile Doctor Seal and Go, our topical sealer which will both protect the Slate from dirt and stains, and also gave it the desired finish. As you can see from the below photographs, the rich, dark shades in the Slate were really enhanced. The customer was very pleased with the finished result, but was also concerned about keeping the Slate clean in the long-term. For regular cleaning I advised the customer to use a pH neutral cleaner for aftercare called Tile Doctor Neutral Cleaner. As a pH neutral cleaner, it will not erode the sealer compared to acidic cleaners you so often find in supermarkets. Russell Taylor Lancashire Tile Doctor
