This project involved a full kitchen renovation in a private home in Miami, developed in collaboration with a local designer.
The original kitchen had a traditional layout with dark cabinetry and limited light. The goal was to open the space and create a more modern, welcoming atmosphere that would work both for everyday living and entertaining.
The new design is centered around a large marble island with waterfall edges, which became the focal point of the kitchen. Warm wood panels balance the light cabinetry and natural stone surfaces, while the marble backsplash adds texture and depth.
During the design process, several finish combinations were explored. Different variations of cabinetry tones - from warmer walnut to softer cashmere finishes - were presented so the client could compare options and choose the direction that felt right for the home.
Location: Miami, Florida.

Jacqueline is a Haute Culture creation, a place without limits, where culture and experimentation merge into a single essence, becoming the focus of a continuous exploration of boundless worlds, giving rise to exclusive creations.
The Jacqueline collection is the first and only to be created in real bamboo. One of the foremost values of Haute Culture is its inherent uniqueness: just like a tailored outfit, every Gessi collection stands out for its unmistakeable originality. Similarly, as the creation of a haute couture garment involves meticulous steps, each mixer in the Jacqueline collection undergoes a comparable handmade process, making them unique and incompatible with mass production.
Jacqueline represents the perfect encounter between the excellence of Italian haute couture and the finest craftsmanship. Inspired by the timeless appeal of style icons, Jacqueline reinterprets the concept of exclusive tailoring with a design that stands out for its timeless elegance and refinement, bringing bamboo into the bathroom for the first time. Each element of the collection is born from a sartorial process, designed to harmoniously adapt to the personality of those who choose it, like a haute couture garment.
Material innovation is at the heart of Jacqueline where bamboo represents a deep connection with nature. The roots, hand-selected, are processed to create organic shapes that make each element unique. Gessi has reinterpreted tradition through a patented process that combines bamboo with metal, resulting in exclusive, cutting-edge solutions including the Matte Black finish, which gives the collection a contemporary and sophisticated effect.

In this organic modern kitchen, Nut Brown walnut cabinets in a custom paneled door style from Grabill Cabinets show off the beauty of natural wood. The large format porcelain tile with prominent black veining used for the backsplash and range hood lend contrast and an organic silhouette. White Dove perimeter and upper cabinetry from Grabill Cabinets, along with white countertops and white pendant lighting, keep the color palette fresh and airy. The limited and clean-lined hardware selections fits the “less is more” aspect of organic modern interior design. Interior Design: Sarah Sherman Samuel; Architect: J. Hillcrest Construction designed and executed a complete facelift for these West Chester clients’ master bathroom. The sink/toilet/shower layout stayed relatively unchanged due to the limitations of the small space, but major changes were slated for the overall functionality and aesthetic appeal.
The bathroom was gutted completely, the wiring was updated, and minor plumbing alterations were completed for code compliance.
Bathroom waterproofing was installed utilizing the state-of-the-industry Schluter substrate products, and the feature wall of the shower is tiled with a striking blue 12x12 tile set in a stacked pattern, which is a departure of color and layout from the staggered gray-tome wall tile and floor tile.
The original bathroom lacked storage, and what little storage it had lacked practicality.
The original 1’ wide by 4’ deep “reach-in closet” was abandoned and replaced with a custom cabinetry unit that featured six 30” drawers to hold a world of personal bathroom items which could pulled out for easy access. The upper cubbie was shallower at 13” and was sized right to hold a few spare towels without the towels being lost to an unreachable area. The custom furniture-style vanity, also built and finished at the Hillcrest custom shop facilitated a clutter-free countertop with its two deep drawers, one with a u-shaped cut out for the sink plumbing. Considering the relatively small size of the bathroom, and the vanity’s proximity to the toilet, the drawer design allows for greater access to the storage area as compared to a vanity door design that would only be accessed from the front. The custom niche in the shower serves and a consolidated home for soap, shampoo bottles, and all other shower accessories.
Moen fixtures at the sink and in the shower and a Toto toilet complete the contemporary feel. The controls at the shower allow the user to easily switch between the fixed rain head, the hand shower, or both. And for a finishing touch, the client chose between a number for shower grate color and design options to complete their tailor-made sanctuary.

Just north of Seattle, this family home is tucked away on a magical parcel of land within the Edmonds city limits. Designed to maximize the site’s breathtaking views, it is carefully sited to blend into its wooded setting while opening fully to expansive views.
On our first visit, we found a secluded forest glade with stunning vistas of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains perched atop a high seaside bluff. Preserving and enhancing this singular landscape as the surrounding neighborhood fills in with development was central to our design.
The approach is intentionally restrained—the home does not reveal itself entirely upon arrival. The house is composed of two wings that cradle the meadow, making it the most important “room.” Interior spaces are oriented towards the lush landscape and impressive views framed by mature trees.
The structures are kept close to the perimeter, leaving the center of the site unbuilt. A covered bridge with a green roof acts as a front porch, linking the upslope garage/office with the main house. A gentle stair flows through the gap between the structures, drawing visitors into the clearing.
The floorplan is highly efficient, carefully tuned to the family’s daily routines. Each room is exactly suited to its purpose, yet no larger than needed.
An open corner with double-height windows creates a jewel-box dining room. Free of a corner structure, the home expands to encompass the covered patio for outdoor cooking and dining, plus easy access to the kitchen, encouraging year-round outdoor living.
Human-scale moments are intentionally created, from a stairway window seat with peekaboo views to a covered outdoor extension of the great room that fosters a cozy relationship between interior and exterior.
Much of the light-filled interior is wrapped in clear-finished fir, giving it a warm glow even on rainy winter days. White oak cabinets and black soapstone countertops add warmth to the kitchen. The built-in furniture in the library loft and the cold-rolled steel fireplace surround were crafted by the owner’s father, an expert woodworker, increasing the connection between the home and its occupants. The second story includes the primary suite with treehouse vibes.
Located on a steep slope in a landslide-prone area, the Edmonds Overlook overcame numerous technical and engineering challenges to address vehicle and fire access, stormwater and erosion mitigation, and potential earth movement.
Green Design:
Compact footprint and conditioned area compared to comparable homes, reducing carbon and ongoing energy use
Green roof at covered entry
Heat-pump air and water heating with multiple zones to maximize efficiency
Whole-house Heat Recovery Ventilation system
Engineered On-Site Stormwater Management System
Landscape restoration using 100% native species, added 47 trees to site, plus meadow plantings

This project started as a dark, dated kitchen with heavy oak cabinets, small square tiles, and an awkward layout. The appliances were jammed into corners, storage was limited, and the whole space felt closed in. You can see in the before photo how cluttered and boxed-in everything looked, with old counters, mismatched finishes and hardly any natural flow to the backyard.
We completely stripped the kitchen down to the studs and rebuilt it from the ground up. Every element was rethought to make the space brighter, more functional and more inviting. The new design features sleek floor-to-ceiling cabinetry in a soft, modern finish with integrated handles, creating a clean, uninterrupted look. We installed a long, waterfall-edge quartz island to serve as the centerpiece of the room, with plenty of prep space and seating. Matching quartz countertops and backsplash tie everything together for a seamless, upscale feel.
We also swapped the old flooring for large-format marble-look porcelain tiles that reflect light and visually expand the space. New recessed pot lights and under-cabinet lighting brighten every corner. A powerful stainless steel hood and a chef-ready gas range replace the outdated appliances, giving the kitchen both style and substance. Every inch of storage was optimized with deep drawers, hidden pull-outs and smart organization.
The result is night-and-day compared to what was there before. What used to be a cramped, tired kitchen now feels like a custom-built showpiece. It’s brighter, more open, more functional and built to last, turning an everyday kitchen into a space that’s both practical and stunning.
