Studio26homes hadn’t used Eldorado Stone before this project and were pleased to find that Eldorado is not only passionate about what they do but also back up their products should any problems arise. The fact that Eldorado Stone is locally manufactured, offers low maintenance, is competitively priced, and features the geometric shape they were looking for provided further confirmation that this was the company to work with. They chose Eldorado’s Castle Stone and were originally going to only apply it onto the fireplace and chimney. This homeowner in Wayne wanted to refine a small wooded area bordering their driveway and street without losing the natural character of the landscape. The space had been left largely unmaintained, with accumulated leaves, debris, and overgrown plants detracting from its potential. Preparing the Landscape Our team began by carefully clearing out unwanted growth, creating a clean foundation while preserving the existing woodland feel. Once the area was prepped, we added a healthy layer of bio-soil to improve planting conditions and support long-term growth. To ensure the new landscape blended seamlessly with its surroundings, we selected shade-tolerant shrubs. These plants thrive in lower-light conditions and naturally complement wooded environments, providing structure, texture, and year-round interest without looking overly formal. Natural Touches Along the edge of the driveway, we installed a border of river rock to prevent mulch and soil from washing onto the pavement. The river rock not only serves a practical purpose but also adds visual interest and clearly defines the new planting area.

Set inside a circle of 100-year-old maple and oak trees, while complimenting the main home’s architecture, these ‘tree houses’ give shelter, space for imagination & safe play outdoors for twins. Mimicking the trees’ height and scale, and mirrored in each of their designs, these two 6 foot square base by 14 foot tall twin play structures allow for each child to have its own personal space, yet are connected at the center swings. These unique treehouses have been built with sustainable sourcing and upcycled construction methods. When Martine Ilana, Principal designer of Temescal, considered what a ‘treehouse’ would look like for her twins, immediately it’s ideation was focused on keeping the integrity of the forest and problem solving how to use as many repurposed and sustainable materials as possible. Accessing the incredible selection of salvage materials from a salvage yard in Detroit, Temescal was able to source non-toxic, and structurally sound woods to build the structure itself. Healthy building materials include: Metal Roofing and Water based Low VOC paints. A slatted exterior structure was designed to create a rain screen and in addition complement the Main home’s exterior design. Designed with an end of life intention for longevity and a easy means to pull apart these structures apart once the children are older, the foundations can be used for a future ADU. The slide posed the largest problem to source as recycled plastic slides are not made available to residential projects by US based manufactures and repurposed from Facebook marketplace hit many dead ends. Ultimately, she chose to use a HDPE high density polyurethane plastic slide that would allow for its material to be recycled once at the end of this life. An irrigation drip system was integrated into all planters to ensure efficient watering and healthy plant growth with minimal maintenance. To soften the design, artificial grass with stepping stones was installed, creating a low-maintenance, lush look while improving flow through the yard. For evening atmosphere, three metal posts were installed for string lighting, complemented by low-voltage lighting throughout all flat and raised planters to deliver layered, resort-style ambiance after dark. The Challenge: The original landscape (seen in the "Before" photos) lacked definition, featuring aging shrubs and a worn flagstone path that didn't quite manage the slight slope of the yard. The goal was to create a more intentional, high-end look that felt both organic and structured. The Solution: Stone Artistry: We replaced the old borders with hand-stacked Oklahoma chop stone retaining walls. This added much-needed height and structure, creating clean lines that frame the new turf and planting beds. The Dry Creek Bed: A focal point of the design is the custom Colorado river rock dry creek bed interspersed with large flagstone steppers. This not only serves as a beautiful visual "river" flowing through the landscape but also provides a functional solution for water runoff. Lush Layers: We swapped out the old, thin grass for a vibrant, healthy lawn and introduced a variety of drought-tolerant plantings and ornamental grasses. The use of dark mulch provides a sharp contrast, making the greens of the plants and the earthy tones of the stone truly pop. The result is a low-maintenance, high-impact landscape that provides a warm, sophisticated welcome to the home.
