A cedar cladded cooking island decorates a lush backyard, complementing the natural scenery. Using an ultra-compact Dekton countertop adds a modern and functional touch to this classic kitchen, featuring gas and charcoal grills.

This growing family of six embarked on a first floor remodel of a 1910 farmhouse in Lewisville, Texas.
Kim Bailey Interiors designed the space to include a family-sized entertaining kitchen. Custom gray cabinets, quartz counter tops, white arabesque back splash, under-cabinet lighting, and upgraded appliances were just a few of the incredible additions to this space. Original features that were kept included the original hardwood flooring, the original windows, and the original pantry door that was reused for a new walk-in pantry behind the refrigerator. The over-sized custom designed island is flanked on one side with a custom built-in display cabinet to house family china and the other side has open shelving, a serving bar, and additional storage.

The living room in this mid-century remodel is open to both the dining room and kitchen behind. Tall ceilings and transom windows help the entire space feel airy and open, while open grained cypress ceilings add texture and warmth to the ceiling. Existing brick walls have been painted a warm white and floors are old growth walnut. White oak wood veneer was chosen for the custom millwork at the entertainment center.

A need for extra counter space and fine wine service, creates a ‘JEWEL’ of a kitchen! As the artful anchor, the Emerald Glacier quartzite includes many shades of lush green, grey and red. Complimentary colors of natural cherry cabinets, warm walnut floors and surrounding Willow glass backsplash support the vibrant, playful colors creating an enhanced multifunctional space.

A 43” diameter heritage pecan guided the plan of this neighborhood-scaled, modestly-priced, single-story, L-shaped house. In Austin’s seemingly perpetual drought, the goal was to create a symbiotic relationship between house and tree: to complement, not combat each other. The roof’s east/west parallel ridges create a valley directly across from the base, where water is collected at a grate, nourishing the tree. The roof also maximizes south facing surfaces, elevated at 15 degrees for future solar collection. The open, public spaces of the home maximize the north-south light. The private zone of the bedrooms and bathrooms include a generous gallery; its angled walls and large sliding doors are faceted about the tree. The pecan becomes a central focus for indoor and outdoor living, participating in the house in both plan and section. The design welcomes and nurtures the tree as integral to its success. A retro 1950’s kitchen featuring green custom colored cabinets with glass door mounts, under cabinet lighting, pullout drawers, and Lazy Susans. To contrast with the green we added in red window treatments, a toaster oven, and other small red polka dot accessories. A few final touches we made include a retro fridge, retro oven, retro dishwasher, an apron sink, light quartz countertops, a white subway tile backsplash, and retro tile flooring.
