We recently finished this landscape design and installation project in the Tanglewood neighborhood of Houston, Texas. Our client, a Louisiana native who loves entertaining and wanted to stay connected to her NOLA roots, desired a space that could comfortably accommodate 30+ guests on a regular basis. We deliberately designed the outdoor kitchen without a cover to preserve the view of the magnificent oak trees. Our aim was to create a kitchen that is both durable and visually appealing. The countertop is made of leathered granite, a material that can withstand the unpredictable Texas weather. All the appliances, including the grill, refrigerator, sink, and double side burner, were locally sourced and are made of stainless steel. Additionally, we utilized Austin limestone, which was quarried right here in Texas. To infuse a touch of New Orleans charm into the backyard, we incorporated a fountain. The surrounding black star gravel was designed as a versatile space that can be used for additional dining, seating, or even as a meditation area. To ensure privacy and shade as the plants mature, we strategically planted Eaglestone Holly and Japanese Yew along the fence line. Completing the landscape, we selected Amerishade grass for its excellent shade tolerance.

This job demonstrates how seamlessly the works we do with natural stones can blend with complex living spaces such as your kitchen. The backlit onyx piece serves as a backsplash that has become an art piece and completely transforms the kitchen from a regular space within your home into a stunning area that inspires awe.

This beautiful kitchen is from a custom home found in Toronto. The home was designed and built by Avvio Fine Homes and completed in 2018. It is open concept, looking onto the family room and the spacious kitchen dining area. It also includes a large island with a breakfast bar and opens to the rear walkout deck, offering sun-filled views of the rear yard.

There were to many disjointed spaces in the existing Eichler home, and the owners didn’t like entering right into the kitchen wall. There were not enough functional spaces in the house but it was tricky to see how or where to add to the home without losing the atrium. The Klopf team re-arranged the spaces in the house to put the bedroom functions under the flat, 8-foot ceiling and the whole great room under the higher gable roof, moving the kitchen to the corner and creating a symmetrical and regular-shaped great room. A narrow band of skylights and a reduced, but still open, atrium brighten the family’s days and bring more greenery into their lives. The Klopf team turned the small front bedroom into a laundry room, powder room, and hallway to a large, added work-from-home office/family room that can double as a guest room. From the street the addition looks like it might have been there all along, but for the family members it’s a game-changer. This typical 1980͛s master bath was a 5͛ x 8͛ foot space with a single vanity, small, angled shower and modest linen closet. The homeowner͛s desire was to have two sinks, a soaking tub, shower and toilet all in the same 5͛ x 8͛ space. This certainly posed a design challenge. Deleting the linen closet and relocating the toilet allowed for a ͚wet room͛ design concept. This enabled the homeowner͛s to incorporate both a soaking tub and a tile shower with a frameless glass enclosure. A sliding barn door replaced the old existing inswing door making room for his & her vanities opposite each other. The 12 x 24 porcelain tile covers the bath floor and wraps the shower walls to the ceiling. This adds visual depth to this small space. A glass and metal hexagon accent band create a pop of color and texture in the shower. This bath was made complete with Cambria Bellingham quartz countertops, glass vessel bowls and coordinating glass knobs on the vanity cabinetry. 205 Photography

Not too long ago I visited a client who had just moved into a lovely old cottage in Milton, Oxfordshire. She wanted to restore many of the antique features of the building, including a fantastic Quarry tiled floor in the kitchen. Quarry is typically a robust, hard wearing stone, but in a high traffic area like a kitchen, the tiles will need regular maintenance. These tiles clearly hadn’t seen a thorough clean and fresh seal in a long time, and so I was called in to provide just that. On the first day of work, I gave the Quarry tiles a deep clean using a strong solution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean and water. Pro-Clean is a versatile alkaline cleaner that also helps to break down any old and no longer effectual sealer remaining on the tiles. The solution was applied evenly to the floor and left to dwell for half an hour, allowing time for it to seep into the stone to get underneath and lift out the ingrained dirt. I then removed the dirt by agitating the solution with a scrubbing pad fitted to a rotary floor scrubber. I worked in small sections at first, and gradually finished the entire floor. After completing the initial clean, I rinsed away the soiled solution and vacuumed up the excess moisture using a wet-vac machine. I then scrubbed the floor an acid wash using a dilution of Tile Doctor Grout Clean-Up to remove grout smears and other mineral type deposits. The resulting solution was then removed in a similar fashion using a wet-vac. The final step in the cleaning process was to rinse the floor with Tile Doctor pH Neutral Cleaner to remove any trace of product helps to tackle any remaining dirt and reset the pH balance of the tiles before sealing. After leaving the floor to dry overnight, I returned the next day to the house to seal the floor with Tile Doctor Seal & Go, a water-based topical sealer which gives the floor an aesthetically pleasing sheen and a robust surface seal. Renovation is stressful. Wouldn’t it be nice to let someone else oversee product selections, manage day-to-day issues, and bring your project to a successful completion? The owners of a two-family in Arlington recently did just that, flying off to Florida just as we began renovating their first floor unit. Of course, before they left we thoroughly discussed all aspects of the work order, which included renovating the kitchen and bathroom, painting the bedroom, and adding a laundry closet. We reviewed color and material selections, and set up a schedule for regular briefings. A handful of issues did come up. But because we had planned ahead, we were able to resolve them with very little stress for our clients. For instance, the client had chosen a bright yellow paint color for the kitchen walls, but once the new cabinets, countertop, and flooring had been installed, it was clear that yellow would clash. We suggested a more complementary Benjamin Moore Lancaster Whitewash shade instead. In the bathroom, the clients had selected a deep inset mirrored medicine cabinet. But when the wall behind the vanity was opened, it revealed a pipe running up the wall, too close for the inset model. In this small space, a bump-out medicine cabinet would be awkward, so instead we placed a mirror over the sink and two smaller inset cabinets on either side – a solution that pleased the homeowners, who now have his-and-hers storage spaces. Finally, the homeowners had resigned themselves to the fact that the laundry closet would be too small for storing detergent and other needs. This Coquitlam home in the Harbour View area got a complete kitchen update, including our premiere Boulevard Collection Cabinetry. The perimeter cabinets are Troico White and the Island is a custom painted light grey which brings out the country feel in the room. The sink is a white porcelain apron sink and the La Cornue Stove, from Williams-Sonoma, showcases the custom-built hood fan and cabinetry on either side. Crown moulding was carried throughout the room and custom paneling was installed, separating the eating area from the living room. A custom hutch was also built and placed in the eating area to allow for extra storage. The end of the hutch was designed to be a computer desk. This allows for the hub of the home to be in the kitchen. Matching laundry room and powder room cabinets were installed to match the kitchen cabinetry. All the cabinetry installed in the home was built with furniture kicks. This gives the cabinetry a furniture feel, rather than regular recessed kicks.
