A doctor in Dallas hired Mapos to design his dream home in the upscale neighborhood of Bluffview that would serve as both a haven from his hectic days at the hospital and a space to support his active outdoor lifestyle. Mapos was tasked with designing a modern home that would function as a definitive counterpoint to the new, yet traditional McMansions on adjacent properties. The client emphasized the necessity of informal living and dining areas for entertaining, spacious bedrooms, a home office, and plentiful storage space for his outdoor gear and automobiles. He also requested an outdoor pool, hot tub, and lush landscape to isolate the property and establish a sense of privacy. The two-story interior was designed as an open volume with the second floor inserted into a larger box, creating a dramatic interplay of double-height and compressed spaces on the lower level. For the exterior, Mapos composed the house out of four flat-roofed volumes, assembled to create welcoming front and rear outdoor spaces, intimate landscaped side gardens, and visual protection from the neighbors. The forms and proportions combined contain a rich assembly of indoor and outdoor spaces that will serve the client for years to come.

“Compelling.” That’s how one of our judges characterized this stair, which manages to embody both reassuring solidity and airy weightlessness. Architect Mahdad Saniee specified beefy maple treads—each laminated from two boards, to resist twisting and cupping—and supported them at the wall with hidden steel hangers. “We wanted to make them look like they are floating,” he says, “so they sit away from the wall by about half an inch.” The stainless steel rods that seem to pierce the treads’ opposite ends are, in fact, joined by threaded couplings hidden within the thickness of the wood. The result is an assembly whose stiffness underfoot defies expectation, Saniee says. “It feels very solid, much more solid than average stairs.” With the rods working in tension from above and compression below, “it’s very hard for those pieces of wood to move.” The interplay of wood and steel makes abstract reference to a Steinway concert grand, Saniee notes. “It’s taking elements of a piano and playing with them.” A gently curved soffit in the ceiling reinforces the visual rhyme. The jury admired the effect but was equally impressed with the technical acumen required to achieve it. “The rhythm established by the vertical rods sets up a rigorous discipline that works with the intricacies of stair dimensions,” observed one judge. “That’s really hard to do.”

Superadobe is a form of earthbag construction, a technique using layered long fabric tubes or bags filled with adobe to form a compression structure. The resulting beehive shaped structures employs corbelled arches, corbelled domes, and vaults to create single and double-curved shells that are strong and aesthetically pleasing. This Cedarfield project consisted of siding and window replacement. Excavation of this Gunite swimming pool in Roslyn, NY is started by marking up and laying out the pool according to town setbacks. We proceed with framing and establishing the pool shell’s rough height. Then the excavator will dig and shape the hole, preparing it for rebar installation. After the # 4 rebar is installed, creating a cage that outlines what will be the final shape of the Gunite swimming pool. The Gunite cement shell is installed by applying a mix of sand and Portland cement through a pump system which is pushed through a nozzle with the force of compressed air. As the cement comes out from the nozzle, water is sprayed simultaneously to create a bond between the sand and cement, forming the Gunite pool shell. In this particular pool, we also molded an autocover box on the deep end of the pool, and swim out bench with the same Gunite cement process. On the shallow end of the pool steps were also shaped in Gunite expanding across the width of the pool. At this stage the Gunite pool shell will be left to cure for 28 days, and water will be sprayed on the concrete shell daily to help the shell petrify. Stub plumbing is installed through the Gunite walls for future connection of plumbing pipes. The skimmers are also placed in the pool before Gunite is sprayed, which encases them in concrete. Plumbing for the bottom drains, and pressure relief valve are placed in the floor, in case in the future the pool needs to be emptied and ground hydraulic pressure is under the pool due to high water tables. On top of the pool shell, along the length of the pool a groove is left in the shell for future installation of the Auto Cover track. The pool shell was constructed 10″ wide for the wall and 8″ wide for the deep end bowl and shallow area floor.
