Field ArchitectureThe Grasslands home was born out of and celebrates the beautiful but fragile grassland ecology of the Carmel Valley. Our client’s desire to actively simplify his lifestyle to the most essential elements inclusive of space clearly drove sensibilities in the design. In addition the home features a precision, derived from the client’s love of flight, a grounded-ness from his love of books and the love of his horse.
To meet the simplistic beauty of the scope, the home consists of three interconnected glass pavilions and a detached barn which wrap to the bowl shape of the land. The pavilions are comprised of a master suite, a library/living room, kitchen, and a meditation sanctuary; the barn, his horse and car.
The design focuses on preserving the delicate ecosystem of the surrounding grasslands, while concurrently incorporate views and maximize solar orientation. In support, the pavilions sit on the perimeter of an existing bowl shaped depression in the hillside. Three primary landscape walls run parallel to the topography, emphasizing the shape and spatial definition of the land as well as providing locations to anchor the structures. Pulled up and out of the landscape, the buildings jut over the anchor walls, hovering above the native grasses. In section, the land appears to flow through the pavilions, undisturbed and collaborative to the architecture.

Woodling Landscape DesignThis active family needed to overhaul this large property but didn't know where to start. "It's like three acres of boring dirt and weeds", said my client. The steeply sloped property did indeed present unique challenges with ever-present voracious deer, the need for erosion control and bank stabilization, large areas that required planting while still considering water conservation, and the need for beautification and modernization to tie into the aesthetic of the newly renovated home. Concurrently, safety and access to all parts of the property were a consideration. Landscaping goals were accomplished through careful plant selection and judicious use of retaining walls in various styles throughout the property. Generous railroad tie steps were used on sloping side yards. The landscaped portions converge gracefully with the existing oak woodland. Children can play and hide in many fun spots, while my client's elderly grandmother can safely walk around.

Gayler Design BuildAs we were completing the kitchen renovation, our clients were concurrently undertaking a pool construction project and approached us to design and build a pavilion structure adjacent to the pool area.
Katie Hutchison StudioThis one and one-half story, in-town, simplified Gothic Revival on Martha’s Vineyard has had a handful of alterations over the years. The latest is the addition of a new shed dormer which we designed to join an existing shed dormer, forming an ell.
The result increased headroom, daylight, and ventilation, greatly improving a bedroom, while creating space for a new full bath and additional closets. The new dormer is nested in the primary roof and fitted with casement windows to match the existing dormer, as if they were built concurrently.
While we were at it, we introduced a new, fresh color palette upstairs and off the first floor main entry hall to highlight the Island locale and to play off the porcelain ceramic and beach glass tile that we chose for the new bath

Our customer came to Anchor Property Services for assistance with remodeling her kitchen in the first half of 2022. She bought her forever home and needed more space and modernism. She had a growing family and she wanted to multitask and do things around the house while keeping a close eye on her children concurrently.

Morpurgo ArchitectsMorpurgo Architects enhanced the approach to this French Provincial home by modifying the long driveway to create a circular courtyard in front of the house, thereby elevating the sense of anticipation prior to entering.
We expanded the undefined front foyer, so that the new vestibule with grand staircase and mosaic flooring would be worthy of this significant home.
In redesigning the kitchen, we concurrently opened the family room wall and extended it to meet a windowed corridor with a floor-to-ceiling glass space that blurs the distinction between the two rooms. The passageway, infused with sunlight, provides expansive views to the verdant landscaped property.
As part of the overall expansion of this home, Morpurgo Architects increased the size of the wing that contains a family room, cabana, playroom and garage space. A new master bedroom wing was constructed as a bookend, establishing a symmetry for the French Provincial façade. This suite contains a sitting room, bedroom area with a tray ceiling, spacious closets and elegant bathrooms.

Designed concurrently with Umhlanga House 1, the ‘left over’ space between the houses was maximized to create an expansive lush garden. The ground floor living spaces are orientated to amplify the collective garden space. The bedrooms above are twisted to focus the view toward a green avenue and the Indian Ocean. The interior design by Moos Interior Architects.

Hush HouseTrim+Edge is a custom mid-century modern residential landscape remodel in East Austin, Texas (78702). Designed by Hush House, the project transforms a sloped residential lot into three functional outdoor zones using a slatted steel retaining wall, a pea gravel courtyard, and a shaded patio lounge.
2. Design Challenge & Architectural Solution
The Challenge: Leveling a sloped backyard lot to create usable, multi-functional outdoor living spaces for family gathering and entertaining.
The Solution: Installing a low-profile, slatted steel retaining structure to level the upper lawn while creating a seamless step-down transition into a pea gravel courtyard and shaded patio lounge directly adjacent to the main home.
