Improve your living room or bedroom begins with the perfect area rug—an essential element that enhances both style and functionality. A well-chosen rug not only anchors the room but also adds warmth, texture, and a touch of personality to your space. Whether you’re decorating a cozy bedroom or a spacious living room, selecting the right rug is crucial to achieving a harmonious and inviting atmosphere.
Design and Style: The design of your area rug can dramatically influence the overall look of your space. For a luxurious touch, consider hand-tufted or hand-knotted rugs, which offer intricate patterns and rich textures. These rugs are often crafted with attention to detail, making them ideal for adding an elegant statement to any room. If you prefer a more modern approach, machine-woven rugs are a great choice. They come in a variety of vibrant patterns and colors and are built to withstand heavy foot traffic thanks to their heat-set fibers. For a versatile option, flat-woven rugs, such as kilims, provide a reversible design that fits seamlessly into both contemporary and traditional decor.
Materials and Comfort: When selecting a rug, the material plays a significant role in both its appearance and comfort. Shag and flokati rugs are perfect for creating a plush, cozy environment. Their long, soft fibers add a layer of comfort underfoot, making your living room or bedroom feel more inviting. Hand-loomed rugs offer unique textures and artisanal quality, while braided and hand-hooked rugs add a charming, handcrafted touch. For practical maintenance, machine washable rugs are a smart choice. They allow for easy cleaning and help maintain a fresh look with minimal effort.
Functionality and Practical Features: Beyond aesthetics, consider the functionality of your rug. Stain-resistant and water-resistant rugs are ideal for managing spills and stains, ensuring that your rug remains in good condition over time. Non-slip and adhesive backings are essential for safety, particularly on hardwood floors. These features prevent the rug from shifting and reduce the risk of slips and falls. Additionally, cushioned rugs enhance comfort, making your space not only stylish but also more enjoyable to relax in.
Customization and Personalization: Add a unique touch to your space with custom or personalized rug options. An 8x10 area rug is a popular choice for covering large areas and can be tailored to fit specific dimensions or design preferences. Personalized features, such as fringe details or organic textures, allow you to create a rug that reflects your individual style and complements your existing decor.
Versatility and Maintenance: The top 15 area rugs available today offer a diverse range of styles and features to suit various needs. From distressed designs that add character to contemporary patterns that offer a modern edge, there is a rug to match every aesthetic. Large rugs for living rooms and bedrooms can help define the space and create a cohesive look, while huge carpets can make a bold statement. Consider the practicality of each rug, ensuring that it not only enhances your decor but also withstands everyday use.
In Summary: Selecting the ideal area rug involves finding a balance between style and practicality. Whether you opt for a luxurious hand-tufted design, a durable machine-woven option, or a versatile flat-woven style, the right rug will elevate your living room, bedroom, or any other space. By exploring various options and considering both design and functionality, you can find the perfect rug that transforms your space into a stylish, comfortable haven.

The homeowners of this 1940’s craftsmen bungalow loved the charm of their home but not the cramped layout or the freezer like conditions each winter brought to the poorly insulated space. What they really wanted was a complete kitchen makeover, doubling the working surface area of the kitchen without forfeiting period details, especially the ogee archway.
We estimate between 500 and 600 people visited our craftsman kitchen remodel as part of the 2016 Spring Remodelers Showcase Home Tour! Thank you to all who attended and for those of you who showed interest in our design/build capabilities, we look forward to meeting with you soon.

The little cottage on Turnip Field Road in Eastham had been owned by the same couple since 1940, until they built a new, adjacent house on the property. The cottage was then handed down to the next generation, who began spending more and more time at the cottage. It was then that they contacted Cape Associates to construct a more livable home in place of that little cottage. It was crucial to the owners however, that the home keep with the understated charm and Cape Cod-feel of the neighborhood.
The primary challenge was to keep it humble, while building the owners their well-deserved vacation retreat. The original cottage had no air conditioning, and renovating was quickly dismissed because of the inadequacies and the cost of modernizing. Building new allowed the team to relocate the house further back from the street, and it meant meeting the owners’ needs without compromise.
Cape Associates’ project manager Lance LaLone said the owners expressed their desire to incorporate lots of wood and the types of materials that were in the old cottage. Most of the interior is pine, which was used on the flooring, the walls, and wrapped around the ceiling’s beams, giving the owners what they desired on a grander scale – a beautiful, modern dwelling that still held the personality of that little cottage that held such cherished memories.
The front of the home has a two-car garage and breezeway entrance, while the rear reveals an entertainer’s paradise, with an enormous mahogany deck with an outdoor shower, a stunning Connecticut-fieldstone fireplace with a chimney that reaches around 30 feet in height, and multiple sliders to access the home. The finished basement opens to the ground level, and above the entrance breezeway is another small deck with a great view. It’s the best of indoor/outdoor living.
Movement patterns from beach to house to bedroom were an important consideration. The site also provided an excellent opportunity to visually connect the basement level patio visually to the main level deck and finally the master bedroom deck. The finished home provides year-round living, with a summer-getaway atmosphere.

There are many challenges in Milwaukee commercial exterior painting.
With such a wide variety of building fascia materials requiring different coatings, materials and application equipment, there are varying environmental and atmospheric conditions to deal with and elaborate equipment required to complete many of the jobs. Hi-rise buildings need staging, weatherproofing, special machinery and applicator lifts to reach all surfaces.
One of the toughest challenges is the requirement to complete the Milwaukee commercial exterior painting project while the business or government office is in continuous operation. All of this requires professionalism, experience, expertise and knowledge that can only be gained by years of work with the diverse coatings and equipment that is necessary to complete large exterior commercial painting projects.
Richmond Painting is regularly selected by facility owners and general contracting firms. For the right commercial exterior painting job, we’ll travel as far south as Libertyville, IL and as far north as Mequon, WI. From where we are centrally located in Racine, WI, Richmond Commercial Painting dispatches professional crews and equipment to paint commercial building exteriors throughout the area.
Commercial Exterior Painting ServicesAt Richmond Commercial Painting our professionals are available to assist with every aspect of the exterior commercial painting project, from planning, to design, to budgeting, to application and completion. With a solid record of projects completed on time and within budget, our expertise will make any job move like a well-oiled machine; smoothly and quietly.
Whether the job requirements are for using elastomeric coatings to weatherproof masonry exterior walls, applying two-part epoxies, spraying high-solids paint for protecting exposed metal, or any of the other specialty architectural coatings, we have the experience, equipment and highly trained personnel to satisfactorily complete the project. We can also tap a network of competent tuck-and- point subcontractors to repair any joints, corners or sprawls in brick or masonry.
Our experienced project managers provide their years of background in all types of exterior coatings jobs to make every commercial painting project a successful joint venture with the owner, architect-designer and/or general contractor. We effectively dovetail our portion of the project with those of the other trades, contributing to a smooth “critical flow” on the job.
Our portfolio of successfully completed projects includes all types of commercial exterior painting projects: hotels, hi-rise office buildings, factories, warehouses, industrial parks, schools, churches, apartment buildings and just about every other type of commercial facility you can find around Milwaukee.
Our clients have learned that with the professional, commercial exterior painting services provided by Richmond Painting, Inc., a job done right the first time saves money over one that requires a number of return visits to the job to touch-up or correct flaws. Keeping that in mind, we’ve found that it really costs no more in the long run to hire the very best.

Our client approached us while he was in the process of purchasing his ½ lot detached unit in Hermosa Beach. He was drawn to a design / build approach because although he has great design taste, as a busy professional he didn’t have the time or energy to manage every detail involved in a home remodel. The property had been used as a rental unit and was in need of TLC. By bringing us onto the project during the purchase we were able to help assess the true condition of the home. Built in 1976, the 894 sq. ft. home had extensive termite and dry rot damage from years of neglect. The project required us to reframe the home from the inside out.
To design a space that your client will love you really need to spend time getting to know them. Our client enjoys entertaining small groups. He has a custom turntable and considers himself a mixologist. We opened up the space, space-planning for his custom turntable, to make it ideal for entertaining. The wood floor is reclaimed wood from manufacturing facilities. The reframing work also allowed us to make the roof a deck with an ocean view. The home is now a blend of the latest design trends and vintage elements and our client couldn’t be happier!

This renovation in Manhattan placed us within a block of Central Park, delivering a complete overhaul of an ideally-located 1800-square-foot condo. The project was for a young family, whose newly-purchased property is in a post-war building and was in sponsor-condition when we arrived, warranting quite a bit of love. By delivering a complete interior renovation of the apartment, including two bathrooms, kitchen, floors, lighting, and custom millwork, we provided a modern, highly-functional space the family can proudly call home for years to come.
PARENTS NEED SPACE
Storage was the most important factor in this renovation. With a small child ready to rumble at all hours, our clients knew they were going to have all kinds of stuff taking over their space. At the same time, they wanted to be able to have guests come in and not see clutter. Our solution was neatly designed opportunities for storage nestled throughout the apartment.
To start, we created a custom entertainment unit, offering storage below, with open shelves above. Built-in under the living room window is banquette seating with significant storage beneath. Not only does the dual-purpose nook offer areas to store toys galore, the cozy spot offers beautiful windows with views of the shimmering skyline and rooftop gardens, providing practical peace of mind. Every inch of this renovation was designed with intention, so no space is wasted.
UNIQUE KITCHEN DESIGN
There are various custom elements that make this particular NYC kitchen renovation stand-out. While the majority of the apartment has herringbone wood flooring, determination was made that having herringbone in the kitchen would have been way too busy. So, we went with straight planks for the kitchen, blended from the living room with a custom wood flooring design. The straight planks not only look better, they were most cost-effective. Additionally, there’s wood paneling lining the kitchen, accenting the off-white and chestnut cabinets with a touch of luxe. Finally, the quartz backsplash and countertop offer a nice and seamless touch to the overall modern design.
FORWARD-THINKING DESIGN FOR CHILDREN
Our goal with the kid’s bedroom design was to offer a multi-purpose space the child could enjoy and use as needs change over the years. Beyond the playful wallpaper, we provided plenty of timeless built-ins that can be used to store diapers and books early on, while also including a desk space for homework in later years (hopefully).
COMPLIMENTARY BATHROOMS
When we renovated the two bathrooms in this Manhattan apartment, our goal was to create similar but distinct designs between the two spaces, that still felt unique in their own right and blended with the rest of the home. The wood vanities incorporate the heavy wood tones from other rooms, while the strong accent tiles on the walls and big, bold marble floor tiling create elegant foundations for each space.
SOME HIGHLIGHTS
- Natural light drop ceilings offer nice recessed lighting throughout the entire apartment
- New doors & new hardware throughout, w/crystal doorknobs in various areas
- Built-in bar to accommodate guests, complete with lights under cabinet and distressed mirrored backsplash
- Plaster crown molding offering a very clean and classic touch throughout the transitional space

We had the pleasure of crafting this bespoke modern, painted home office for our client’s residence in Reigate, Surrey. They had decided it was time to invest in a fresh, inviting and dedicated workspace where they could be more productive. The desk, which fits seamlessly into the space, features a full stave prime oak worktop finished with a protective oil to provide a superior long-lasting surface. The custom desk cabinetry has been flawlessly spray finished Little Greene Sage Green, which contrasts beautifully with the attractive, natural oak wood desktop. The soothing, muted green paint colour and tailored storage creates a calm, uncluttered setting, perfect for a focused workspace.
Customised and crafted for comfort
The right storage was vital for our client and this made to measure desk features integrated drawers and a double cupboard putting work essentials right at their fingertips. Every drawer and door functions effortlessly and quietly thanks to the best quality Hafele ironmongery and soft close mechanisms. In this home office design, we also incorporated two matching oak wall-mounted shelves which follow the angle of the ceiling and a low-level built-in bookcase which fits perfectly under the sloped ceiling.
Made to measure curved corner desk
The curved corner desk has been constructed with integrated drawers, cupboard space, cable management tray on the underside, and an open bookshelf unit to one side. Having a curved corner desk in front of the window is a strategic decision that combines ergonomic comfort and enhanced use of space. The curved shape brings the workspace closer to the body, allowing for a more natural, wraparound working experience that pairs well with the natural light and views from the window. The design also delivers additional comfort, thanks to the spacious full depth leg room underneath. A curved L-shape design also makes the desk feel less dominant than a traditional straight desk, preventing the room from feeling cramped while still providing ample workspace.
Solid prime oak work top
The desk’s beautiful solid prime oak top provides a stable, heavy surface for working. It also offers exceptional strength and durability. While oak resists dents and scratches, it can be sanded and refinished, when necessary, to restore its condition. Real wood surfaces, such as oak, have natural antibacterial properties, which can help maintain a cleaner working environment too.
A full stave worktop is a premium one-piece surface made from a continuous oak plank (stave) that runs the entire length of the worktop creating a luxurious, linear, and consistent appearance and showcasing the natural beauty of the timber.
