This home, set at the end of a long, private driveway, is far more than meets the eye. Built in three sections and connected by two breezeways, the home’s setting takes full advantage of the clean ocean air. Set back from the water on an open plot, its lush lawn is bordered by fieldstone walls that lead to an ocean cove. The hideaway calms the mind and spirit, not only by its privacy from the noise of daily life, but through well-chosen elements, clean lines, and a bright, cheerful feel throughout. The interior is show-stopping, covered almost entirely in clear, vertical-grain fir—most of which was source from the same place. From the flooring to the walls, columns, staircases and ceiling beams, this special, tight-grain wood brightens every room in the home. At just over 3,000 feet of living area, storage and smart use of space was a huge consideration in the creation of this home. For example, the mudroom and living room were both built with expansive window seating with storage beneath. Built-in drawers and cabinets can also be found throughout, yet never interfere with the distinctly uncluttered feel of the rooms. The homeowners wanted the home to fit in as naturally as possible with the Cape Cod landscape, and also desired a feeling of virtual seamlessness between the indoors and out, resulting in an abundance of windows and doors throughout. This home has high performance windows, which are rated to withstand hurricane-force winds and impact rated against wind-borne debris. The 24-foot skylight, which was installed by crane, consists of six independently mechanized shades operating in unison. The open kitchen blends in with the home’s great room, and includes a Sub Zero refrigerator and a Wolf stove. Eco-friendly features in the home include low-flow faucets, dual-flush toilets in the bathrooms, and an energy recovery ventilation system, which conditions and improves indoor air quality. Other natural materials incorporated for the home included a variety of stone, including bluestone and boulders. Hand-made ceramic tiles were used for the bathroom showers, and the kitchen counters are covered in granite – eye-catching and long-lasting.

This kitchen remodel was designed to make a statement—balancing bold character with refined craftsmanship to create a space that’s both highly functional and visually unforgettable. At the heart of the design is a striking contrast palette. Crisp white perimeter cabinetry keeps the space bright and open, while rich black lower cabinets and a substantial island ground the room with depth and sophistication. The oversized island serves as both a functional workspace and a central gathering point, topped with a dramatic stone surface that adds movement and texture. The flooring plays a defining role in the overall aesthetic. A custom black-and-white patterned tile layout introduces energy and personality, transforming the kitchen into a true design centerpiece while maintaining a timeless appeal. This bold foundation is thoughtfully balanced by clean lines, classic shaker cabinetry, and elegant hardware selections. Functionality was a key driver throughout the project. The layout maximizes workflow efficiency with dedicated zones for cooking, prep, and cleanup. A professional-grade range anchors the island, while the farmhouse sink positioned beneath large windows brings in natural light and enhances the everyday experience. Custom storage solutions—including extended cabinetry, integrated dish storage, and built-in appliance areas—ensure everything has its place without compromising the clean aesthetic. Lighting was carefully layered to elevate both form and function. Statement pendant fixtures above the island add architectural interest, while recessed lighting provides consistent illumination throughout the space. The result is a kitchen that feels both elevated and livable—where bold design choices meet practical everyday use. It’s a space designed not just to cook in, but to gather, entertain, and truly enjoy.

Modern Pool with Custom Pergola

Completed in 2018 in beachside New Smyrna Beach, this modern pool brought a new level of luxury to our clients’ vacation home. The project included a custom pergola with dovetail trellis and a metal roof which mirrors the porch of the home but allows for a few people to congregate poolside in the shade. The pool itself features a large sunshelf with a custom two-bend handrail, an umbrella holder and room for at least two lounge chairs. The interior of the pool is finished with white diamond pebble sheen, and the ivory paver deck consists of 16-inch Artistic Pavers in a diamond pattern. Finally, all of our pools come with our exclusive self cleaning floor system, resulting in sparkling water, low maintenance, and more energy efficient operation when heating the pool.

Not only do they have nearly 70 years of experience in building windows, but they are appealing to homeowners with a multitude of tastes and needs and offer a wide variety of windows in different shapes and sizes that are durable and easy to use.

Thedo Remmelink, a Dutch native, competed in the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics in snowboarding. He moved to Steamboat Springs in order to coach snowboarding for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. Thedo is the type of person whom you are thankful that the client carries the torch. Our goal of this project was to design a sustainable home. We chose straw bale as the primary material because of its high R-value (tested at R-40 to 45), its ability to resist high winds, it’s attribute of acting as a thermal tempering mass and it’s thick old world feel. The S.I.P.’s (Structural Insulated Panels) in the roof have an R-Value of 49. The home also utilizes passive solar, most of the glazing faces south and southeast. The concrete slab and the central heating element provide the mass to store the solar heat. The concrete slab contains radiant heating. However, the radiant heat is designed to be at a very low consistent temperature. The central heating element is used for task heating. The kitchen and dining side of this heating element is gas, and the living room side contains a highly efficient wood stove. In addition to our primary goal of creating a sustainable home, it was also extremely important to create a design that reflects Thedo’s personality and a house that settles into the open valley. The upper curves reflect the surrounding hills. The half level change at the master bedroom along with the cross-axial plan creates spatial flow directly informed by the site’s change in elevation, solar aspect, and the views to the north and south to the Elk River Valley. The use of logs for the structure juxtapose the high tech energy efficient lighting and the 18 inch thick straw bale walls contrast the precisely cut stone and metal rails. Through these contrasting elements one realizes the permanence as well as the ethereal nature of home.

The desire for a modern, energy efficient home on a modest budget necessitated a tight plan and simple, durable materials. The uncomplicated program consists of an open plan living space, master suite and home office, all with ample connection to the outdoors. Straightforward construction techniques yield light-filled volumes that take advantage of passive heating and natural ventilation. Coming in at a modest 1,700 square feet of living space with a 200 square foot detached garage, this dwelling delivers all the comforts of home in a compact package.

Battle Architects was hired to be the architect for a large vacation compound on Tips Cove, Lake Winnipesaukee. In our early discussions with the clients, their mantra to us was that they wanted to “love every inch.” From this beginning, Battle Architects worked closely with the clients and team carefully developing and coordinating every detail inside and out. The compound consists of a caretaker’s house and separate garage, utility garage, boathouse, and the main home. The main home was oriented and designed to enjoy the beauty of Lake Winnipesaukee. The exterior details were developed with a rustic tone which the clients loved, and the interior spaces were designed to accommodate large family gatherings and create great memories. The second floor has “pods” of bedrooms and bathrooms for each sibling’s family privacy with a couple of common areas for smaller gatherings. There is a private master suite, located on the first floor, with its own screened porch offering a gorgeous view of the lake. There is an easy flow through the kitchen, great room, and large screened porch accommodating large gatherings. The basement is a series of entertainment spaces – an exercise room, movie theater, bowling alley, game area, and bar area for the rainy days and warm nights where the family can gather and enjoy their time together. Big picture interior details were designed with a rustic feel inspired by projects such as Lake Placid Lodge. There were opportunities to create unique spaces such as the bowling alley which incorporates details inspired by Fenway Park. The exterior material palette is comprised of river rock, skirl siding, red cedar shingles, Douglas fir timber frame, and natural and painted trim. The interior material palette offers warmth and comfort with butternut, oak, hickory, and birch bark on the first floor; cherry, Douglas fir, and mahogany on the second floor; and oak, mahogany, alder, Douglas fir, and English walnut for the basement. Exterior details were developed with energy conservation in mind and acoustic details were developed throughout the home for privacy. Millwork and cabinetry were developed with a mill shop and artisan cabinetry and mantels were added as highlights in the home.

Working through a newly defined mechanism called the “Community Land Trust” program Lawrenceville Corporation is pioneering a new standard for community development and affordable home ownership. Phase one of the CLT development consists of 6 new and one renovation unit that are built with materials that are equal to, or often times of a higher quality than the market rate homes that Lawrenceville has become known for. In addition, every CLT home has been designed to seamlessly integrate into existing historical fabric of Upper Lawrenceville by respecting and implementing design elements from contextual neighborhood patterns. The CLT design team’s radically different approach to sustainability, resiliency, and energy efficiency will ensure the affordability of these homes remain intact for generations, challenging the idea that affordability should equate to compromises in the quality of living.
