The new Owners of this cottage on Dickie Lake in the Township of Lake of Bays approached us to design a substantial “face-lift” renovation of the existing cottage, and to design a new garage for secure storage. A scrapbook collection of architectural style reference photos that the Owners had collected set the starting point for an integrated & consistent design style between the cottage and the new garage. A gable roof feature was added to “celebrate the entry” to the existing cottage. Windows, doors & siding were installed to the newly constructed garage. Windows & doors in the existing cottage were integrated with the new board & batten siding applied to both the cottage and the garage. A high-quality exterior siding stain was applied by hand-brushing for enhanced penetration & protection. A durable exterior deck stain was applied to the new cedar deck.

The project included raised-panel doors made in the shop, extensive millwork throughout the space, and a matching round butcher block table crafted from the same cherry used for the cabinets Sourcing consistent cherry proved difficult at the time. We solved it by purchasing S2S cherry and milling everything in-house to maintain color and quality control. Working from a smaller shop in the early days in the area, the cabinetry was built ins stages and installed with careful attention to fit and finish. The result is a cohesive, warm kitchen with solid cherry cabinetry, custom millwork, and a matching table that ties the entire space together.

The definitive idea behind this project was to create a modest country house that was traditional in outward appearance yet minimalist from within. The harmonious scale, thick wall massing and the attention to architectural detail are reminiscent of the enduring quality and beauty of European homes built long ago. It features a custom-built Spanish Colonial- inspired house that is characterized by an L-plan, low-pitched mission clay tile roofs, exposed wood rafter tails, broad expanses of thick white-washed stucco walls with recessed-in French patio doors and casement windows; and surrounded by native California oaks, boxwood hedges, French lavender, Mexican bush sage, and rosemary that are often found in Mediterranean landscapes. An emphasis was placed on visually experiencing the weight of the exposed ceiling timbers and the thick wall massing between the light, airy spaces. A simple and elegant material palette, which consists of white plastered walls, timber beams, wide plank white oak floors, and pale travertine used for wash basins and bath tile flooring, was chosen to articulate the fine balance between clean, simple lines and Old World touches.

This ambitious project replaced a failing creosote railroad tie retaining wall that had collapsed at our client’s hillside home on Vineyard Lake. A project this size can be daunting in scope to address the overgrown, unstable slope. Our team worked together with thoughtful hardscape design, skilled execution and consistent site management, delivering a quality installation in a timely manor. Landscape Designer, John McBride, crafted a site design that worked with the natural contours of the hillside, incorporating a terraced approach for structural integrity. Project Supervisor, Donnie Jones, expertly choreographed the new segmented wall construction while concurrently removing the upper railroad tie walls to stabilize the hillside.

This “before” Manhattan kitchen was featured in Traditional Home in 1992 having traditional cherry cabinets and polished-brass hardware. Twenty-three years later it was featured again, having been redesigned by Bilotta designer RitaLuisa Garces, this time as a less ornate space, a more streamlined, cleaner look that is popular today. Rita reconfigured the kitchen using the same space but with a more practical flow and added light. The new “after” kitchen features recessed panel Rutt Handcrafted Cabinetry in a blue finish with materials that have reflective qualities. These materials consist of glass mosaic tile backsplash from Artistic Tile, a Bridge faucet in polished nickel from Barber Wilsons & Co, Franke stainless-steel sink, porcelain floor tiles with a bronze glaze and polished blue granite countertops. When the kitchen was reconfigured they moved the eating niche and added a tinted mirror backsplash to reflect the light as well.
