While being the new kid on the block, this home was designed to be a good neighbor to it's older surroundings. Progressive in materiality, fenestration and detailing but sympathetic in scale and form. It provides the homeowners privacy from the street but is very open to the backyard and the southern sun exposure afforded there. While the home is not certified, it subscribes to many Passive House principles which means it provides a very comfortable environment with good indoor air quality as well as reducing energy consumption. To further tread lightly on the planet, the home is all electric thereby directly excluding the use of fossil fuels. Alternative energy is provided by geothermal and solar photovoltaic systems. The homeowners are also big proponents of local bike culture and have prioritized bike use with an attached bike garage that also serves as a space for training and repairs, and a small bike trail looping the urban property.

The customers desired a secluded environment for retreat at the end of a long workday. The project began with stone selection. We desired an organic stone that would age beautifully over time, and shape the walls and features of the space.
Our team faced major logistics challenges throughout the project. The wooded property sloped away from the house dramatically making difficulty bringing in large materials and machinery needed to complete the job. Tree protection and a temporary road were constructed for the duration of the project.
Stone placement was key to success for this project. We hand-selected each boulder for the project and assembled the stones by similar grain patterns and colors to create authenticity. The idea was to give the illusion that these natural limestone formations existed on the property before the home and landscaping was created adding a great mystery to the overall feature.
The viewer is surrounded by large stone walls with cascades of water that have shaped the stone over time. The viewer is given the illusion that the source of water comes from the distance of the property and cascades into a secluded area. We designed an underground cistern to hold rain water run-off allowing the water feature to naturally filter the water for re-use.
The pump system is run on a Variable Frequency Drive for programmable automation, allowing the customer to run the waterfall at different flow rates at different times of day allowing for operation cost savings, and low energy consumption.

The library, pantries, office, laundry, and the master and guest bedroom suites encircle the Great Room, allowing the primary living space to remain open, elegant and functional. Residents and caretakers circulate seamlessly between bedrooms and the nerve center of the home. Expansive passage between each zone of the Great Room, and throughout the home, accommodates movement assistive devices. Accessible bathing, including a roll-in shower and dedicated dressing area near the laundry streamline the family’s personal care routines. Passive solar illumination, including both traditional and tubular skylights, minimizes the home’s energy consumption.

A visual artist and his fiancée’s house and studio were designed with various themes in mind, such as the physical context, client needs, security, and a limited budget.
Six options were analyzed during the schematic design stage to control the wind from the northeast, sunlight, light quality, cost, energy, and specific operating expenses. By using design performance tools and technologies such as Fluid Dynamics, Energy Consumption Analysis, Material Life Cycle Assessment, and Climate Analysis, sustainable strategies were identified. The building is self-sufficient and will provide the site with an aquifer recharge that does not currently exist.
The main masses are distributed around a courtyard, creating a moderately open construction towards the interior and closed to the outside. The courtyard contains a Huizache tree, surrounded by a water mirror that refreshes and forms a central part of the courtyard.
The house comprises three main volumes, each oriented at different angles to highlight different views for each area. The patio is the primary circulation stratagem, providing a refuge from the wind, a connection to the sky, and a night sky observatory. We aim to establish a deep relationship with the site by including the open space of the patio.

This custom-designed home, a collaborative effort between our team and our clients, is tailored perfectly for their retirement while offering ample space for their children and extended family to visit during ski and biking seasons. Nestled to maximize stunning southern views and overlook the nearby ski hill, the home seamlessly blends practicality with beauty.
A standout feature is the loft space above the garage, designed as a flexible area that can be transformed into a workout studio, yoga retreat, crafting space, or even a cozy nook for writing memoirs, all while enjoying the mountain views.
Built to the highest performance standards, the house includes triple-pane windows, enhanced insulation, and a low-consumption heating and cooling system to ensure comfort throughout the year. Its small footprint reduces both energy demands and operational costs.
All millwork and cabinetry were meticulously crafted in-house by our team of skilled artisans, adding to the home’s unique charm. The combination of modern open spaces with traditional architectural arches creates a harmonious blend of design concepts, making this home both timeless and inviting.
