Our inspiration for this home was an updated and refined approach to Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Prairie-style”; one that responds well to the harsh Central Texas heat. By DESIGN we achieved soft balanced and glare-free daylighting, comfortable temperatures via passive solar control measures, energy efficiency without reliance on maintenance-intensive Green “gizmos” and lower exterior maintenance. The client’s desire for a healthy, comfortable and fun home to raise a young family and to accommodate extended visitor stays, while being environmentally responsible through “high performance” building attributes, was met. Harmonious response to the site’s micro-climate, excellent Indoor Air Quality, enhanced natural ventilation strategies, and an elegant bug-free semi-outdoor “living room” that connects one to the outdoors are a few examples of the architect’s approach to Green by Design that results in a home that exceeds the expectations of its owners. Nestled into a sloping site, Aman 10 uses the hill’s natural grade to its advantage to capture views, create a daylight basement and control water runoff. A series of sod roofs cascade down the hill, blending the residence into the hillside. Slatted doors and walls create transparency, contrasted by a solid material palette of sandstone, redwood and bronze. Installation crew carefully fitting custom plantation shutters during a precise on-site installation, ensuring accurate alignment and a seamless custom fit. This custom home in The Peninsula community of Cornelius, NC features a full-home installation of motorized plantation shutters designed for both style and function. Many of the windows in the home were oversized, located at significant heights, and difficult or impossible to reach manually. Motorization was the ideal solution, allowing the homeowner to control light and privacy throughout the home with ease while maintaining a clean, cohesive design aesthetic. The shutters were custom-fitted to each opening, enhancing the architectural lines of the home while providing durability, energy efficiency, and precise light control in every room. This project highlights how motorized window treatments can solve accessibility challenges in high-end custom homes without compromising design.

The garden layout mimics the casual and fun nature of the clients, while providing a layer of plants that come alive with seasonal color and texture using a climate-adapted, drought-tolerant plant palette that attracts pollinators and songbirds galore. Garden spaces also provide perfect nooks and crannies for the clients’ outdoor sculptures - a perfect way to personalize their garden. Additional hillside pathways bring access to the vista above the ADU. At the top we find a leveled DG space for raised garden beds, bench seating to enjoy the lovely ambiance, day or night, and the soothing sounds created by a water feature made from a trio of basalt columns. Erosion control plants also play a key role not only in beautifying the landscape but also helping to hold the soil in place. On site stormwater retention captures runoff water from the hardscape while also providing a dramatic landscape feature with massive boulders and climate adapted plants.

Taragano Design & Build framing a project in Walnut Creek, California. What this stage shows is a house temporarily holding itself up while its walls are gone. The roof stayed and the exterior walls below it came out, which means the load path had to be carried through temporary shoring and then transferred onto new headers and posts as they went in. That sequence is engineered before demolition starts. It is not resolved on site. The new openings are much wider than what they replaced, which is usually the entire point of a project like this. Wider spans mean larger headers, larger headers mean more concentrated point loads, and those loads have to land on something. Frequently that means new footings poured under existing slab. Working alongside a pool adds constraint rather than complexity. The project began with the owner’s vision to create on their Atherton property a new home, reminiscent of the Mediterranean villas and gardens they loved to visit on European holidays. They wanted to create an oasis, a home that would nurture their creativity and foster a feeling of calm. The design creates this sense of transition right as you enter the property, through a long, tree-lined driveway, thru a custom gate and into a gracious entry court. Walking through a formal entry garden, you arrive at a round entry tower, completing the transition from street to home. This residence is located within walking distance of downtown Sausalito, with panoramic views of Richardson Bay. The owner wanted an eco-friendly, modern, meditative home that celebrated the maritime environment, while fitting within the historic context of the neighborhood and meeting the challenges of a tight, steep site. The design gracefully meets each of these constraints. The front façade makes the house unassuming and private to the street, while floor to ceiling doors and windows facing the views create a light and airy interior. With clean lines and a combination of light and dark woods, this passive solar house is warm, and elegant in its simplicity. The project includes a rainwater harvesting system (the first approved for domestic use in California!) and a comprehensive home automation system capable of controlling all electronic devices remotely by a web-enabled interface. The controlled interplay of details and natural materials have developed a language reminiscent of the Currumbin Beach style and develops an aesthetic that provides a soft human scale appropriate for children. The Timber battened Entry façade creates a contemporary cubic form of which replicates consistently through the integrated hubby house playground design. Renovation of the existing house created three classrooms, staffroom and utility spaces creating a feeling of home and strong connection to the Currumbin creek through the dappled landscaped vista. Extension areas created two classrooms and administrative areas are linked by a series of breezeway covered areas which provide shelter and safe sanctuary. Joint Venture between the Childcare and Wellness Centre to the front enabled carparking and accessibility of the battle-axe site.

This 1,800s.f. Passive House is designed to harmonize with its peaceful, wooded site. The interior is organized around a large south opening to a courtyard-like patio space; as a backdrop to this opening is a wall featuring walnut from trees harvested on site. As a Passive House, it uses about a tenth the heating energy of a built-to-code home. As a Source Zero house, monitored results show it uses 86% less energy overall including all household energy use and electric car charging. Indoor air quality and occupant health are a primary objective as well, so no-added-formaldehyde panel materials, no-VOC, non-toxic paints, and Greenguard certified sealants, caulks, and adhesives were used along with a continuous demand-controlled ventilation system to provide superior air quality.

The Bolton-Schluter residence, located in the rural mountainous residential neighborhood of Topanga Canyon, has 2500 square feet of interior living space, with an additional 1650 square feet of exterior decks and stairs, plus garage. The wooded hillside lot is 75’ wide and 600’ deep with three large oaks that are protected by local ordinance. The garage sits on the relatively level ground adjacent to the street. The house itself “climbs” up the 40% slope upwards, achieving a 44’ elevation gain to the scenic views at the top. The design concept for the Bolton-Schluter residence combined a strong theoretical approach with the rigid building constraints of the area. The protected oak trees dictated the required angles of the stair, which, along with the natural angles of the contours on the site, and certain directional bearings in the landscape / horizon in the distance gave rise to a conceptual ordering system controlling the internal and external geometry of the house.
