Homeowner and photographer Martin Vecchio worked with designer Tori Olijar of KSI Kitchen & Bath to convert an old Detroit firehouse into a stunning home with a picturesque living space. The old firehouse had a lot of character and provided the great bones Martin was looking for. Mr. Vecchio wanted a contemporary space that matched his personal style, but great care was also taken to respect the original character of the building. THE SETUP Originally an empty front living room, this space offered a blank canvas for transformation. Alicia’s client — a financial wealth management professional facing a career shift towards more home-based work — was excited to make it her new office. Capitalizing on the space’s abundant natural light, perfect for on-camera meetings, Alicia helped convert the area into a primary workspace. Design Objectives: - Create a functional and professional home office Cultivate an aesthetic that is both comfortable and feminine - Optimize the office for the space’s ideal lighting and provide an appealing background for virtual meetings Design Challenges: - Transforming a large, undefined space into a structured, functional office - Selecting a color palette that enhances focus and professionalism, balanced with a feminine touch - Strategically placing the desk to maximize functionality and aesthetics within the large area Incorporating solutions for effective real-time stock trade tracking and analog task management THE RENEWED SPACE Design Solutions: Workspace Configuration: Centered the desk to utilize indirect light, ideal for video calls, while providing a commanding view of the office, the outdoors and the entrance. A floor-installed power outlet under the desk ensures a clean, cord-free setup. Aesthetic and Palette: Anchored by a striking wallpaper chosen by the client, Alicia developed a soft, neutral color scheme that complements the room’s black window frames and maintains a feminine touch. Digital Integration: Included a screen dedicated to monitoring daily stock trends, positioned for easy viewing. The energy efficient monitor doubles as artwork when not in use, seamlessly blending functionality with style. Organizational Features: Implemented dual large bulletin boards for task and project tracking, integrating them aesthetically with custom cabinetry and interesting, yet subdued, fabric backing. Our client is thrilled with her new home office, which not only meets her professional needs but also adds comfort and style to her daily work routine. The space is highly functional for both solo work and client appointments, providing a perfect blend of business professionalism and personal comfort. It embodies the essence of a #girlboss, combining a professional atmosphere with feminine elegance, making every workday enjoyable and productive.

Converted the space into a multi-functional space with built in file folders in the tall white cabinets, video & CD storage, as well as workout hand equipment. Our clients love to entertain, and they needed a kitchen to fit their style. They had a space with an odd shaped island and they could not visualize how to best redesign this to get a larger island without all the angles. They also had no pantry storage area in the kitchen which they really wanted. We used our Kitchen Solvers app to create a video walkthrough to showcase the design we came up with, which they loved. The kitchen had a window that looked out into another room that had been converted into a bar and entertainment space. We took out the window and enlarged the opening, creating a pass-through and serving area to the adjoining room. On one side of the kitchen, we created a long bar area with dual wine coolers that serves as the bar and another serving area. Glass upper cabinets with thick glass shelves were used to display their collection of glass vases and bowls. Inside the cabinet, lighting was added to highlight the collection and shine through the glass shelves. A large pantry cabinet was built between the refrigerator and ovens with an adjustable height rollout system in the lower section. The new cabinets are from our Kitchen Solvers Legacy Collection in a classic white. The hood was custom designed to be the focal point of the kitchen and the honey maple wood matches what we did with the island cabinets. For the counters, we did the island with a waterfall edge in a Sandgate quartz, while the perimeter counters were done in a Lakedale quartz. We also did a full height backsplash in the same Lakedale quartz. The entire kitchen has no visible light switches or electrical outlets. Can lights in the ceiling was added over the new island. Undercabinet lighting is in two zones, the bar area and the rest of the kitchen. Down facing “hockey puck” lighting was built over the passthrough and hidden in the custom trim work. The center drawer in the island has hidden outlets behind the drawer face. Just look at this amazing kitchen transformation!

There was much more to this system. On the opposite side of the room there is a bar, where we installed a satellite Sonos Soundbar, wireless subwoofer and remote control system. A Key Digital HDMI 4K matrix switch and cables were used to connect all sources along with Key Digital HDMI over Cat5e 4K converters, Sonos Connect was installed to stream music from the system throughout the house, and high-end Panamax power protection and filters were included in the system as well. Finally, we added a Lutron RadioRA2 lighting control system, which along with all of the video and audio components were controllable via a Total Control MRX-10 Advanced Network Controller system with TRC-1080 universal remotes or by smartphone.
