This home remodel is a celebration of curves and light. Starting from humble beginnings as a basic builder ranch style house, the design challenge was maximizing natural light throughout and providing the unique contemporary style the client’s craved. The Entry offers a spectacular first impression and sets the tone with a large skylight and an illuminated curved wall covered in a wavy pattern Porcelanosa tile. The chic entertaining kitchen was designed to celebrate a public lifestyle and plenty of entertaining. Celebrating height with a robust amount of interior architectural details, this dynamic kitchen still gives one that cozy feeling of home sweet home. The large “L” shaped island accommodates 7 for seating. Large pendants over the kitchen table and sink provide additional task lighting and whimsy. The Dekton “puzzle” countertop connection was designed to aid the transition between the two color countertops and is one of the homeowner’s favorite details. The built-in bistro table provides additional seating and flows easily into the Living Room. A curved wall in the Living Room showcases a contemporary linear fireplace and tv which is tucked away in a niche. Placing the fireplace and furniture arrangement at an angle allowed for more natural walkway areas that communicated with the exterior doors and the kitchen working areas. The dining room’s open plan is perfect for small groups and expands easily for larger events. Raising the ceiling created visual interest and bringing the pop of teal from the Kitchen cabinets ties the space together. A built-in buffet provides ample storage and display. The Sitting Room (also called the Piano room for its previous life as such) is adjacent to the Kitchen and allows for easy conversation between chef and guests. It captures the homeowner’s chic sense of style and joie de vivre.

With a lengthy list of ideas about how to transform their backyard, the clients were excited to see what we could do. Existing features on site needed to be updated and in-cooperated within the design. The view from each angle of the property was already outstanding and we didn't want the design to feel out of place. We had to make the grade changes work to our advantage, each separate space had to have a purpose. The client wanted to use the property for charity events, so a large flat turf area was constructed at the back of the property, perfect for setting up tables, chairs and a stage if needed. It also created the perfect look out point into the back of the property, dropping off into a ravine. A lot of focus throughout the project was the plant selection. With a large amount of garden beds, we wanted to maintain a clean and formal look, while still offering seasonal interest. We did this by edging the beds with boxwoods, adding white hydrangeas throughout the beds for constant colour, and subtle pops of purple and yellow. Known for its vast permanent collection and for unique temporary exhibitions and creative projects aimed at starting contemporary-art conversations, this Museum in the heart of Las Angelas is at the forefront of artistic and design innovation, the vertical garden privacy screen enhanced the exhibition.

This Bocce Court & Horseshoe Pit installation is our featured project of the month, and this family operated winery at Dancing Apache Ranch wanted activity / game play features for a special events wine tasting room, as well as one for a more private “family” gathering space. Their choices were bocce & horseshoes, and we couldn’t have been happier to create this for them! We first had to meet with the client to select the location for each amenity, and after a little brainstorming and checking out our other bocce & horseshoe courts online, we think we nailed it…the bocce court selection was directly adjacent to this cool outdoor tasting room. The view from the bocce court is the barn-converted tasting room on one side, and the vineyards on the other….PERFECT! If that wasn’t enough, we also installed new matching-themed landscape lighting with bronze fixtures and a programmable timer. Now the competition starts with wine and goes on into the dark… Next came the locale for the family horseshoe pits, and the natural spot was right next to the most popular family gathering area. Where you ask?...why, the kitchen / outdoor dining ramada of course! This added sport amenity really brings the family together, both young and old, and the simple style ties that ranch theme destination together full circle. With a little sod removal and some grading, this completed install was a total ringer, with everybody a winner. Adding sport amenities to gathering spaces is a great way to bring family and friends together. From the bocce court at the tasting room to the horseshoe pits at the ramada, the installation of these two activities included all the finishing touches. Stunning Outdoor Remodel in the heart of Kingstown, Alexandria, VA 22310. Michael Nash Design Build & Homes created a new stunning screen porch with dramatic color tones, a rustic country style furniture setting, a new fireplace, and entertainment space for large sporting event or family gatherings. The old window from the dining room was converted into French doors to allow better flow in and out of home. Wood looking porcelain tile compliments the stone wall of the fireplace. A double stacked fireplace was installed with a ventless stainless unit inside of screen porch and wood burning fireplace just below in the stoned patio area. A big screen TV was mounted over the mantel. Beaded panel ceiling covered the tall cathedral ceiling, lots of lights, craftsman style ceiling fan and hanging lights complimenting the wicked furniture has set this screen porch area above any project in its class. Just outside of the screen area is the Trex covered deck with a pergola given them a grilling and outdoor seating space. Through a set of wrapped around staircase the upper deck now is connected with the magnificent Lower patio area. All covered in flagstone and stone retaining wall, shows the outdoor entertaining option in the lower level just outside of the basement French doors. Hanging out in this relaxing porch the family and friends enjoy the stunning view of their wooded backyard. The ambiance of this screen porch area is just stunning.

Along with many of our clients, we find that older (early 20th c.) homes have a lot of character and a comfortable scale, but are leaky, damp (especially in the basement), have fair to poor air quality, and use unconscionable amounts of fossil fuels to heat. The owners of this bungalow were ready to change that, and wanted to do so with minimal upfront carbon emissions as well. The gut renovation included replacing the basement slab and providing capillary breaks and insulation continuously below grade. The brick structure was treated with a fluid-applied air and water barrier from the interior and insulated entirely with cellulose, a carbon-storing insulation. The roof used HFO-blown spray foam to provide sufficient insulation while allowing headroom for bedrooms, bathrooms, and laundry. One great benefit of a full renovation is the possibility of reconfiguring spaces to suit the family’s lifestyle, and to make the best of indoor-outdoor connections. We opened up the main rooms on the first floor, creating a family gathering spot with a view to the back yard, and a spacious kitchen that supports the family’s commitment to cooking for healthy eating. The stair uses a north-facing skylight to bring light from above into the middle of the home, where it was previously dark. As a decarbonization retrofit, the inefficient furnace was replaced with two small ducted heat pump systems, water heating and clothes drying are powered by air-source heat pumps, and cooking uses an induction cooktop plus electric ovens. Energy recovery ventilation provides filtered fresh air continuous exhaust from the kitchen, baths, and laundry, and supplies fresh, highly filtered air to bedrooms and living spaces. The Better Bungalow now makes sense for the 21st century–it now fits the owners’ life-patterns, is super comfortable, has great air quality, and uses a fraction of the energy it did before, greatly lowering the demand on the utility grid. In the near future, when solar PV is installed, it can achieve net zero or near net zero emissions, and with battery backup, can provide great resilience in the event of power outages.

The Winery has two Logangate Timber Homes connected by a grand entryway. The larger Event Room is 24ft x 42ft and the Tasting Room is 20ft x 26ft. The timber frame structure creates cathedral all-wood ceilings that spectacularly highlight views of the winery and the mountains.

The views to Chicago’s iconic city skyline are unmatched from our clients’ 4th floor Lincoln Park rooftop. Highlighting this outstanding feature was first and foremost in our design approach, so that unobstructed views could be enjoyed in all directions. We began by creating several functional spaces that flow together as a whole. By introducing multiple levels of ipe decking, porcelain pavers, and synthetic turf we were able to break up the space visually and programmatically. The lower landing features an intimate Holly Hunt table paired with Janus et Cie chairs perfect for enjoying the fresh morning air over coffee. On the same level, the adjacent bar allows for cocktail hour entertainment while enjoying the company of guests and the views to the city’s north. One level up, a synthetic turf walkway inlaid with porcelain steppers is flanked by custom aluminum and ipe containers planted with exuberant native plantings and seasonal arrangements. The walkway leads to a viewing station at the parapet wall, where views of the downtown Chicago skyline are magnificent. Lastly, another step up brings one to the casual lounge area replete with furnishings of all-weather plush seating by Gloster, where views are maintained while sitting down. An oversized custom fire table and heated Tuuci umbrella combat the evening chill while friends enjoy the skyline as it comes alive in the evening hours. Programable landscape lighting illuminating the transitional spaces and lush plantings provides the client full control through their home automation system. The hidden speakers within the landscape resonates music throughout the space to keep the sounds of the city at bay. This transformed space has provided the client with a true urban retreat that is fit for quiet family gatherings or energetic events, where all parties can fully enjoy the beautiful city skyline.
