This St. Simons Island deck restoration involved much more than refinishing the visible surface. The existing deck had areas of cracked decking, deteriorated structural components, sagging sections and worn finishes that needed to be corrected before a new coating could be applied. D&D Decorators handled the project from carpentry repair through final finish so the structural and cosmetic work could be completed as one coordinated scope. Compromised decking and joist components were replaced where needed, steps were rebuilt, and sagging areas were corrected. The deck was then pressure washed and thoroughly prepared before coating. New cuts and replacement material were back-primed as part of the preparation process. The restored deck received two coats of protective deck enamel, while the cedar seating was preserved with a clear sealer rather than being covered with an opaque coating. Hardware and other finishing details were also addressed while the structure was open and accessible. The completed project retained the character of the existing marsh-view outdoor space while restoring the areas that actually needed repair. Rather than treating the deck as either a carpentry project or a painting project, the scope combined both disciplines to create a more complete restoration. Our client came to us looking to transform their outdated bathroom into a space that felt both modern and in harmony with the rest of their home. The existing materials and layout were no longer working—visually or functionally—so we set out to reimagine the entire space. To create a more cohesive look with the rest of the home, we installed wood-tone wall tiles, bringing warmth and a natural aesthetic to the bathroom. For contrast and a clean, elevated look, we paired them with Calacatta-style porcelain floor tiles, adding brightness and visual depth to the space. We updated the shower area with a matte black shower system and matching hardware, introducing a sleek and modern edge. The bathtub was removed and replaced with a walk-in shower, which we enhanced with a built-in bench—offering both comfort and practicality. To add further contrast and detail, we selected a hexagon tile pattern for the shower floor, complementing the overall design while subtly standing out. To improve daily functionality, we added drawer storage to the vanity, increasing organization potential without sacrificing style. The outdated plain glass mirror was replaced with a backlit LED mirror with an anti-fog feature, offering both better lighting and a cleaner look. Behind the door, we built pantry-style cabinetry, maximizing storage in an often-overlooked space. At the client's request, we also removed the old heated flooring, which was no longer desired. For water pressure and shower experience, we installed a 2.5 GPM shower system, tailored to the homeowner’s preferences. Finally, we enclosed the shower with a custom frameless glass door and tied everything together with matte black finishes throughout. The end result is a serene, stylish, and fully modernized bathroom tailored to the client's taste—warm yet contemporary, practical yet beautiful. One of the initial challenges for this project was the fact that I was asked to come in with a concept and design a after a number of other pool professionals. That can be an advantage in some situations where the people that preceded you all had a similar idea and concept and we go drastically in a different direction. Either way, that approach usually opens the eyes of the customer to the fact that there are other ways of seeing things and other ways of tackling a difficult site. In this case there was a more level area in a more remote part of the property which would've been easier to build on. Without question. What we offered was the ability to create something dramatic and unique and in the end became actually breathtaking. This involved doing a raised pool and spa combination built into an existing ledge that needed to be exposed and chopped out not only for the raised spa area but for the entire depth of the pool. A large amount of tree clearing was also going to be necessary as well as a plan to deal with the mountains of rock,ledge and granite that was going to come out of this excavation site. Another large challenge was that the choice of this location also made the proximity of the pool to the home extremely close. We needed to come up with a design that included planters and buffers so that the pool would not look and feel like it was too close to the house. By modifying the existing pressure-treated deck off the back of the house as well as raising what would be the final grade of the pool we were able to eliminate any railings that were present for that deck . What that achieved was a wide-open feel and look to the project . Now ,from anywhere in the back of the house the view of the pool the spa and the ledge rising up and around the entire area is a dramatic one, to say the least. The act of removing the ledge that was necessary to create this oasis closely resembled actually sculpting the ledge. We wanted and needed to preserve certain aspects of the exposed ledge areas as we wanted them to blend into the rest of the masonry that we were going to create. Steps and walkways etc. Besides aesthetics, practical solutions, for storm runoff, pockets for future planting and screening of the neighbors properties was a large part of our design and challenge. We were able to blend some of the larger ledge pieces that were excavated into the hard scape, the retaining walls the stone veneer surrounding the spa as well as unique coping pieces and the diving rock. We even used pieces of the ledge as grab rails for the custom swim out in the deep end. Matching granite was used to veneer all the underwater steps benches and swim outs. The spa was designed and constructed with party mode in mind. From the custom stone veneer entrance steps to the multilevel benches and our exclusive" deep soak" hydrotherapy well, it was all part of a custom concept. We actually measure as a tailor would, the dimensions of our hydrotherapy wells to the specific customer. which sometimes comically means that one spouse might be in over their head. In this case we were lucky as the dimensions seem to fit both spouses correctly. In other projects we have actually done his and hers deep wells so that everyone is happy!

DOWNLOAD NOW   This charming little attic bath was an infrequently used guest bath located on the 3rd floor right above the master bath that we were also remodeling. The beautiful original leaded glass windows open to a view of the park and small lake across the street. A vintage claw foot tub sat directly below the window. This is where the charm ended though as everything was sorely in need of updating. From the pieced-together wall cladding to the exposed electrical wiring and old galvanized plumbing, it was in definite need of a gut job. Plus the hardwood flooring leaked into the bathroom below which was priority one to fix. Once we gutted the space, we got to rebuilding the room. We wanted to keep the cottage-y charm, so we started with simple white herringbone marble tile on the floor and clad all the walls with soft white shiplap paneling. A new clawfoot tub/shower under the original window was added. Next, to allow for a larger vanity with more storage, we moved the toilet over and eliminated a mish mash of storage pieces. We discovered that with separate hot/cold supplies that were the only thing available for a claw foot tub with a shower kit, building codes require a pressure balance valve to prevent scalding, so we had to install a remote valve. We learn something new on every job! There is a view to the park across the street through the home’s original custom shuttered windows. Can’t you just smell the fresh air? We found a vintage dresser and had it lacquered in high gloss black and converted it into a vanity. The clawfoot tub was also painted black. Brass lighting, plumbing and hardware details add warmth to the room, which feels right at home in the attic of this traditional home. We love how the combination of traditional and charming come together in this sweet attic guest bath. Truly a room with a view!
