Forward-thinking developers in Utah realized outdoor living space was an in-demand residential feature, but it was also a way to increase the usable square footage of a home. To take full advantage of the potential of this insight, their talented designers had the vision to incorporate roof decks into their residential designs. To accomplish that, it was very important to use products that met building code requirements. Further, it was critical to use skilled installers. Since Duradek fulfilled both of those criteria, a relationship with Duradek of Utah developed. Duradek of Utah could demonstrate that Duradek membranes meet building code as both a classified roofing membrane and a traffic coating. Further, Duradek is applied only by company trained installers who are skilled in waterproofing techniques specific to roof deck waterproofing.

Located on a wooded lot on the south side of Mount Orford in Estrie, this country house is designed to enjoy views of the wooded slope down to a stream at the bottom of the valley and rising to the opposite cliff. The south offers a splendid view of distant mountains. Of modest size, the house is simple, modern and showcases natural materials. It opens towards the forest and the landscape while preserving the intimacy of the customers. The interior is spacious; the living spaces are communicating and friendly, with a high ceiling above the living room and a large picture window in front of the master bedroom, on the mezzanine. The living areas open onto an outdoor terrace that anchors the house to its rocky terrain, protected from the weather and hidden from the street. The rock of the land is highlighted at the edge of the terrace, where a rock face down the slope. A large roof overhang protects the house from the sun in the summer, and the low-level concrete floors absorb sunlight in the winter. The house has been designed according to the criteria of LEED and Novoclimat.

The 2,400 s.f. net-zero corten house occupies a quarter-acre site transected by a small creek. Platted as a legal lot-of-record in the area’s original subdivision in 1910, the site remained undeveloped due to steep terrain and difficulties crossing the creek for access. Additionally all areas of the site are within the creek’s 25’, 50’ and 75’ riparian stream buffers. By necessity, the house, with considerable jurisdictional involvement, was constructed entirely within the 75’ stream buffer. Bridge/drive design complying with City of Atlanta Watershed regulations and State of Georgia EPD criteria was an essential component in realizing the project.

Betsy & Matt have a beautiful pool and patio, but an exposed location on a links golf course left nowhere to escape the afternoon sun and incessant wind. SCD was engaged to design and build an oasis of shade for lounging and entertaining as the focal point of this spectacular outdoor living space. Design Criteria: - Provide shelter from the sun and wind. - Create a light and open area – avoid creating an enveloping “building”. More like a large umbrella than a small building. - Design to harmonize with the client’s modern tastes, as expressed in the home’s interior. - Create space for soft seating, bar seating and cooking, all within the “shade footprint” during the afternoon. Special Features: - Transitional/Modern design. - Custom welded steel frame structure - Roof framed with oversized Douglas Fir timbers. - Custom fabricated sliding wind/sun screen panels. Andrea Piper: When Natasha came into by Design in Des Moines, she instantly fell in love with the Colton sectional. What’s more, she knew she wanted leather. What a great way to start. The Colton’s combination of contemporary horizontal lines combined with rich turfted seating cushions and metal legs is a winner. Adding leather to this design is sure to create a wow look. We chose a brown leather that looks great with the mocha metal legs on the sectional. Then we paired it with a Nicholas chair in a fun pattern and an extra-large Fulton ottoman (in an amazing aqua color) for the family to put their feet up on. Throw pillows bring the colors from the chair into the sectional. Natasha is so happy with how great her room looks and that is always the most important criteria.

This home was a typical Toll Brothers contemporary from the early ‘90’s. The exterior had reached the end of its life, with decayed cedar siding and a deteriorated roof. Greg & Tamara decided to use this opportunity to radically remake their home - to update its modern appeal and set it apart from any other suburban tract house. Spring Creek Design created a new deck, new siding design, entryways and sculptural landscaping for the home. Design Criteria: - Replace siding and give the home a bold, modern look. - Update the home’s landscaping with a spare modernism. - Add a new deck with an outdoor kitchen. This project represents an increasingly popular type of project - combining 2 bedrooms into a single master suite. The house is a 1910 craftsman, with 4 bedrooms on the second floor. Typical of older homes, the master bedroom had a very small bathroom, and very little closet space. The owners decided to sacrifice an adjacent guest bedroom to create a spacious master suite. The new rooms include a large bathroom, with hers and his vanities, separate toilet room, custom tile shower and soaking tub. The extra space also allowed us to install a luxurious custom walk-in closet. Design Criteria: - Increase size and utility of closet space. - Create a large, luxury bathroom with distinctly separate hers/his spaces. This bathroom was completely gutted to allow for a new Carrera marble floor, custom vanity, and freestanding tub. This design successfully met the criteria for both the husband and wife: not too feminine or masculine. This neutral colored transitional bathroom was made complete with an egg-shaped bathtub, warm gray vanity with double sinks, off white cabinets, elegant chandelier, and floral artwork. The soft colored furnishings have given this master bathroom a classic and elegant look.
