The home office was another critical part of the project as both clients work from home. We repurposed a handmade table that was made by the client’s family and used it as a double-sided desk. We painted the fireplace in a gorgeous green accent to make it pop. Finding the balance between statement pieces and statement views made this project a unique and incredibly rewarding experience. In this 90's cape cod home, we used the space from an overly large bedroom, an oddly deep but narrow closet and the existing garden-tub focused master bath with two dormers, to create a master suite trio that was perfectly proportioned to the client's needs. They wanted a much larger closet but also wanted a large dual shower, and a better-proportioned tub. We stuck with pedestal sinks but upgraded them to large recessed medicine cabinets, vintage styled. And they loved the idea of a concrete floor and large stone walls with low maintenance. For the walls, we brought in a European product that is new for the U.S. - Porcelain Panels that are an eye-popping 5.5 ft. x 10.5 ft. We used a 2ft x 4ft concrete-look porcelain tile for the floor. This bathroom has a mix of low and high ceilings, but a functional arrangement instead of the dreaded “vault-for-no-purpose-bathroom”. We used 8.5 ft ceiling areas for both the shower and the vanity’s producing a symmetry about the toilet room door. The right runner-rug in the center of this bath (not shown yet unfortunately), completes the functional layout, and will look pretty good too. Of course, no design is close to finished without plenty of well thought out light. The bathroom uses all low-heat, high lumen, LED, 7” low profile surface mounting lighting (whoa that’s a mouthful- but, lighting is critical!). Two 7” LED fixtures light up the shower and the tub and we added two heat lamps for this open shower design. The shower also has a super-quiet moisture-exhaust fan. The customized (ikea) closet has the same lighting and the vanity space has both flanking and overhead LED lighting at 3500K temperature. Natural Light? Yes, and lot’s of it. On the second floor facing the woods, we added custom-sized operable casement windows in the shower, and custom antiqued expansive 4-lite doors on both the toilet room door and the main bath entry which is also a pocket door with a transom over it. We incorporated the trim style: fluted trims and door pediments, that was already throughout the home into these spaces, and we blended vintage and classic elements using modern proportions & patterns along with mix of metal finishes that were in tonal agreement with a simple color scheme. We added teak shower shelves and custom antiqued pine doors, adding these natural wood accents for that subtle warm contrast – and we presented! Oh btw – we also matched the expansive doors we put in the master bath, on the front entry door, and added some gas lanterns on either side. We also replaced all the carpet in the home and upgraded their stairs with metal balusters and new handrails and coloring. This client couple, they’re in love again!

Complete Hillside Backyard Renovation, El Paso – by GoDesigns This breathtaking backyard transformation in the historic area of El Paso, Texas, is a shining example of GoDesigns’ vision, expertise, and resilience. Situated on a challenging hillside property, the original backyard installed in 2005 was plagued by critical design flaws that led to a complete failure of the outdoor space. The existing negative edge pool, improperly installed with insufficient grade, drainage, and support, caused massive water loss and structural issues. The consequences were severe — the side rock wall broke in half, the backyard destabilized, and even a portion of the house was compromised. GoDesigns was brought in to turn crisis into opportunity. During the height of COVID-19, they launched Phase 1 of a multi-phase master plan to restore and reinvent the space. The entire backyard was demolished, including the compromised pool shell. The broken negative edge section was filled in, making way for a reimagined pool design. A new, reinforced pool structure was shot, finished with 5cm tumbled travertine coping, oversized mossrock boulders, new waterline tile, and a premium PebbleTec interior. Beneath the beauty lies smart engineering: GoDesigns replaced all plumbing and regraded the property, applying subsurface remediation and compaction techniques to ensure long-term stability. A new rocksalt steel reinforced concrete deck was poured, replacing the narrow wraparound layout with a spacious, functional outdoor living area. Now, the family enjoys ample room for chaise lounges, alfresco dining, and relaxing by the existing outdoor fireplace — luxuries they never had before. GoDesigns didn’t stop there. Advanced drainage systems — including underground piping, box drains, and planter drains — were installed to protect the integrity of the hillside. These systems are integrated into leveled planters that not only beautify the space but also reinforce the structure of the pool and surrounding terrain. The family purchased the 1950s ranch on Mullet Lake because their daughter dreamed of being married on its shores. The home would be used for the wedding venue and then as a wedding gift to the young couple. We were originally hired in August 2014 to help with a simple renovation of the home that was to be completed well in advance of the August 2015 wedding date. However, thorough investigation revealed significant issues with the original foundation, floor framing and other critical elements of the home’s structure that made that impossible. Based on this information, the family decided to tear down and build again. So now we were tasked with designing a new home that would embody their daughter’s vision of a storybook home – a vision inspired by another one of our projects that she had toured. To capture this aesthetic, traditional cottage materials such as stone and cedar shakes are accentuated by more materials such as reclaimed barn wood siding and corrugated CORTEN steel accent roofs. Inside, interior finishes include hand-hewn timber accents that frame openings and highlight features like the entrance reading nook. Natural materials shine against white walls and simply furnished rooms. While the house has nods to vintage style throughout, the open-plan kitchen and living area allows for both contemporary living and entertaining. Often a transitional piece within kitchens, the kitchen stove and hood can be critical to the success of the space. Complimenting the dark hardwood cabinets and grey flooring below, the stainless steel offers a complimentary tone within the color palette of the space. Reverberating the lighter tones found above, the steel allows for the materials within the space to talk to one another, adding a level of hierarchic and sophistication to the design. Its refraction of the blue polygonal tile adds character too!

This bedroom was designed to reduce stress and support healing for families and their children with critical illnesses. We used soothing blues, bright greens, and red accents to create a sense of home, of safety, and of hope. We referenced water, animals, and nature - universal themes. The star of this corner is the bright green chair - perfect for reading books with a little one - with a bright blue pillow in Lee Jofa fabric, and a gorgeous walnut side table by Dylan Design Co. The furniture and fabrics are all durable and comfortable, and include: custom tufted headboard in Robert Allen fabric, Robert Allen bench, The New Traditionalists dresser via Chairish, lighting from Sonneman and Circa Lighting and custom drapery in Romo fabric, a low-profile rug from J.D. Staron, and bedding from Serena & Lily. We are honored that Melinda Mandell Interior Design was selected to participate in “Where Hope Has a Home” at the Stanford Ronald McDonald House. This built in Kitchen table solved a critical space issue - there was originally a poorly configured pantry there, and no space for a table. Removing the pantry (which was replaced by the beautiful built in pantry cabinet) allowed space for a built in table. Pantry Cabinet and bench drawer fronts were built by Mike Anderson. Hurd Casement windows were added above the bench to bring in light and make the space feel larger.

The original kitchen featured dark cherry cabinetry with ornate corbels, Tuscan-inspired tile, outdated bronze hardware, and insufficient lighting that made the space feel heavy and visually closed off. While the cabinetry itself was high quality, the clients were unsure whether to paint or replace it and wanted reassurance that their investment would feel timeless. The design solution focused on refinement rather than removal. Existing cabinetry was repainted in a warm neutral tone to immediately brighten the space while complementing the existing stone flooring, and decorative corbels were replaced with simplified profiles to modernize the cabinetry without altering its original construction. Moon Valley quartz countertops established a cohesive palette with subtle warm undertones, while Tuscan-style tile was replaced with classic white subway tile to visually open the space. Patterned tile accents were selectively incorporated at the range and adjacent coffee station, and the range feature was simplified by eliminating the original arch to create a cleaner focal point. Lighting played a critical role in the transformation, with glass and brushed gold fixtures significantly improving brightness and maintaining open sightlines into the adjacent living and dining areas. A new side-by-side refrigerator was custom paneled to match the cabinetry profile, and bulky island seating was replaced with slim-profile barstools upholstered in durable performance materials—supporting an active, family-focused lifestyle. The result is a warm, cohesive transitional kitchen defined by thoughtful restraint, improved function, and lasting appeal.

Wooden Classicism Nesbitt House – Seaside, Florida Architect: Robert A. M. Stern Builder: O.B. Laurent Construction E. F. San Juan produced all of the interior and exterior millwork for this elegantly designed residence in the influential New Urban town of Seaside, Florida. Challenges: The beachfront residence required adherence to the area’s strict building code requirements, creating a unique profile for the compact layout of each room. Each room was also designed with all-wood walls and ceilings, which meant there was a lot of custom millwork! Solution: Unlike many homes where the same molding and paneling profiles are repeated throughout each room, this home featured a unique profile for each space. The effort was laborious—our team at E. F. San Juan created tools for each of these specific jobs. “The project required over four hundred man-hours of knife-grinding just to produce the tools,” says Edward San Juan. “Organization and scheduling were critical in this project because so many parts were required to complete each room.” The long hours and hard work allowed us to take the compacted plan and create the feel of an open, airy American beach house with the influence of 1930s Swedish classicism. The ceiling and walls in each room are paneled, giving them an elongated look to open up the space. With one of the most limited resources in San Francisco being space, it was critically important to make the most of this studio space. We started with a galley kitchen was enclosed with a dividing wall and a small pass-through to the dining area. We ended with an open concept U-shaped kitchen, twice the size and capacity of the original! Being an enclosed space, careful thought was taken to make the space feel as open as possible, including strategic placement of the canned lights, open shelving and white upper cabinets with a white subway tile backsplash.

The garden beds are the icing on your cake. With such a huge variety of plant palettes available, consultation is vital. We specialise in drought tolerant plants and gardens which may range from thicker bushier species to more localised succulents and cactus based palettes. Allow our irrigation specialists to determine what, if any, systems may be required before we then design the planting and mulching accordingly. With increasing water costs and state water restrictions this final stage of the design / build is critical.
