A passion project for The Fernandes family, “The Haverly” is the culmination of a multi-year dream for the clients, who had envisioned a complimentary pool house to go with their authentic mid-century modern home since purchasing it years ago. They took their time, scouring construction sites for the unique Haver Block, a pre-cast signature brick, long since out of production, that was a staple of famed local architect, Ralph Haver. They also obtained and held onto period-appropriate decorative panels from the Biltmore during one of its many remodels. The structure itself takes outdoor/indoor living to another level, with 30 linear feet of the exterior being retractable floor-to-ceiling glass panels, meeting on a corner. This presented a fun design challenge for Zach Burns of MODE Architecture, who had to figure out how to cantilever the majority of the exterior roof with a minimum of visible support. The glass is offset by exposed CMU, with a specific linear grout pattern, and a metal roof fascia with complementary linear detail. The focal point of course is the custom-made walnut bar, complete with period-specific “boomerang” laminate tops and padded leather bar rail. Behind the bar is a commercial-grade bar set up, highlighted by an 80” TV with the capability to split into 4 smaller pictures (period specific to the 21st century!) The bathroom tile matches the pool coping tile, the cozy semi-private office is enhanced by a gorgeous piece of 1950s furniture, and the one-of-a-kind neon sign was a gift from Regency to close friends.

A tea pot, being a vessel, is defined by the space it contains, it is not the tea pot that is important, but the space. Crispin Sartwell Located on a lake outside of Milwaukee, the Vessel House is the culmination of an intense 5 year collaboration with our client and multiple local craftsmen focused on the creation of a modern analogue to the Usonian Home. As with most residential work, this home is a direct reflection of it’s owner, a highly educated art collector with a passion for music, fine furniture, and architecture. His interest in authenticity drove the material selections such as masonry, copper, and white oak, as well as the need for traditional methods of construction. The initial diagram of the house involved a collection of embedded walls that emerge from the site and create spaces between them, which are covered with a series of floating rooves. The windows provide natural light on three sides of the house as a band of clerestories, transforming to a floor to ceiling ribbon of glass on the lakeside. The Vessel House functions as a gallery for the owner’s art, motorcycles, Tiffany lamps, and vintage musical instruments – offering spaces to exhibit, store, and listen. These gallery nodes overlap with the typical house program of kitchen, dining, living, and bedroom, creating dynamic zones of transition and rooms that serve dual purposes allowing guests to relax in a museum setting. Darlene Graeser is a clinical psychologist by day, prolific painter by night. The hyperactive Darlene has little need or use for sleep. Darlene spent her nights wandering around the house and pondering her day, until she discovered that she could ponder just as well with paint and canvas. After one of her early paintings was featured on the cover of The American Psychologist, a one-woman show mounted in Santa Barbara sold out on the first night and the large colorful canvases she favors were stacked three deep in her studio, Darlene finally accepted the inevitable hyphen and is now Darlene Graeser, Psychologist-Artist or Artist-Psychologist, depending on the time of day. For over 32 years she has born witness as people shared their stories in an effort to understand how to put meaning to their suffering. Her flamboyance, humor, empathy, and wisdom have guided many towards transformation. Certainly, her art is a reflection of the lessons that she has learned from these courageous people. Over and over again wings appear in her art - her way of expressing the eternal mystery of life and death. Her newest work is a culmination of many years of working in the field of Death and Dying. Andrew Goodwin Designs collaborated with the homeowners who are seasoned industrial designers on the final structure. To avoid disturbing the dozens of old-growth oak trees, and to mitigate the site’s elevation change of 75-plus feet, the architects opted to lift the 2,330-square-foot, home into the tree canopy, ensuring spectacular views that overlook the valley in three directions-west, south and east. Built with the factory-fabricated Blue Sky Building System (BSBS), the home’s steel-framed floor, roof, and structural posts were rapidly bolted together on-site in less than two weeks. All-Weather dual-glazed sliding doors and windows frame views of the landscape and flood the interior with natural light. "This home is a culmination of design efforts—by them and us—to achieve a space where they can celebrate contemporary design," says Goodwin. The Waterfall Residence is named after the home’s rear wall, which is angled to funnel rainwater runoff from the roof into two 2,000-gallon storage tanks under the home. Powered by a 6.5-kWh solar array and equipped with mostly electric appliances, the Waterfall Residence is designed to achieve net-zero energy after it’s been tested for a full year.

!Viva Sonoran Desert! This Tucson Garden was created for the owners of a residence with a blank slate landscape, to have a strong connection with the beautiful and amazing Sonoran Desert. Using native surface select boulders and over ninety eight percent Southwest regional native plant material we created a wonderful invitation for wildlife such as hummingbirds and butterflies to visit this peaceful and lovely Sonoran Desert Garden. Native grasses help to hold rocky slopes from erosion and Saguaros abound in this garden creating a dialogue with the hundreds of saguaros that are present ubiquitously throughout the entirety of the property. An extended Moss Rock patio naturalistically edges an infinity edge pool that was designed using hand-placed boulders that plunge down to create a canyon-like water feature. The nearby plants may be seen mirrored back in the surface when the water is still. Newly added this year (photos to follow shortly) were several walkways and interconnecting patios that brought together various important areas clustered around the residence and slope going down to a newly created wildlife pond which uses only condensate, grey water and RO water to keep it filled. Overflow goes on to water native trees, relocated from on site to this new location. A Moss Rock gathering area with a firepit large enough for family and friends to sit on the edges and group around and sing the blues under open stars on frosty nights have culminated in making !Viva Sonoran Desert!

Nestled at the end of a long flag lot driveway in Amagansett, NY, a young couple purchased the property with intentions to construct a second home for their growing family. A home that would not only be comfortable for the immediate family but also serve and grow on busy summer weekends to accommodate extended family, friends, children and guests. The tight lot along with the sizable program culminated in the building envelope being pushed to every limit, restriction and regulation one could imagine. The resulting architecture possesses a traditional Hamptons cottage exterior juxtaposed with modern elements that help break up the single mass. Centered on the entry façade is a large double story window that shrouds the floating switchback staircase on the interior. A bluestone patio wraps three sides of the home, which, in the rear, leads to a small in ground pool with a frameless glass railing. In the interior, custom white washed white oak floors run throughout the home as well as on the floating central staircase. For a more modern style of living, the open living, kitchen and dining area serve as one large entertaining space. In an area surrounded by sprawling Mcmansions, this tightly knit home functions more similar to that of a large NYC apartment by serving the perfect balance between maximized form with the right amount of function given the strict parameters. Large glass sliders open the living and dining rooms to the backyard patio and pool creating harmony between the indoor and outdoor spaces.
