2013 CHRYSALIS AWARD SOUTH REGION WINNER, RESIDENTIAL EXTERIOR This 1970’s split-level single-family home in an upscale Arlington neighborhood had been neglected for years. With his surrounding neighbors all doing major exterior and interior remodeling, however, the owner decided it was time to renovate his property as well. After several consultation meetings with the design team at Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes, he settled on an exterior layout to create an Art & Craft design for the home. It all got started by excavating the front and left side of the house and attaching a wrap-around stone porch. Key design attributes include a black metal roof, large tapered columns, blue and grey random style flag stone, beaded stain ceiling paneling and an octagonal seating area on the left side of this porch. The front porch has a wide stairway and another set of stairs leads to the back yard. All exterior walls of homes were modified with new headers to allow much larger custom-made windows, new front doors garage doors, and French side and back doors. A custom-designed mahogany front door with leaded glass provides more light and offers a wider entrance into the home’s living area. Design challenges included removing the entire face of the home and then adding new insulation, Tyvek and Hardiplank siding. The use of high-efficiency low-e windows makes the home air tight. The Arts & Crafts design touches include the front gable over the front porch, the prairie-style grill pattern on the windows and doors, the use of tapered columns sitting over stone columns and the leaded glass front door. Decorative exterior lighting provides the finishing touches to this look.

Rock outcroppings make a striking background for new lounge areas in this compact Los Angeles hillside garden. Working with the attributes of the site, we added native plants to drape over the stone, and converted hollowed stone planters into a firepit and water feature. When it was time to update their small and poorly functional master bath, these homeowners approached Renovisions for help. The small 5’x8’ size constraints was a challenge but ‘Team Renovisions’ was up for the task and came up with a beautiful creative use of space which incorporates a spacious walk-in shower, a curved furniture-styled vanity with porcelain lavatory top, a sleek and energy efficient luxury performance toilet, with faucet and shower fixtures in chrome finish. Safety is a must for our projects and this decorative grab bar that matches the towel holder accessories is evidence of that as it provides both functional and aesthetic attributes. 18”x18” porcelain tiles in a brown marble pattern was a great choice as these over-sized tiles increased the feeling of the room while the rich cherry finish of the vanity complimented the brown veining of the tile nicely. This 1880's monumental ( 10' x 6') figural panel was designed by Elihu Vedder and attributed to fabrication by Tiffany Studios. It once graced a now demolished mansion in Tarrytown, NY. Due to severe bowing, broken or missing glass, and structural failure, the entire window was carefully taken apart and cleaned. Special glass was made to match existing for some replacements. All the lead caming and support bars were replaced, A new thermally insulated triple glazed frame was designed and installed to mount and safely protect the stained glass artwork. The design of the Sheraton Field Bed was introduced towards the end of the 18th Century, is largely attributed to Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite, two English craftsmen who published pattern books during the second half of the 18th Century. Their books, which made their way to colonial America, acted as design references for the many cabinetmakers throughout New England and beyond. The Eldred Wheeler Sheraton Field Bed was designed by Thomas Sheraton as a “portable bed” which could easily be set up or taken apart. Each post is hand turned starting with a solid block of wood over 3” square. The bed pictured features a Connecticut River Valley Headboard and a bow canopy.
