Root Damage Prevention Unlike the rest of the tree, which includes the stems, branches, and buds, the roots are the last part of the tree to go dormant for the winter. This means that they are more vulnerable when the weather takes a sharp cold turn. There are also a number of different things that dictate soil temperatures. For instance, dry soil gets colder quicker than sodden soil.
