The original deck railing on this home was made of beautifully turned spindles and newel posts, but was made of Hemlock. That is a good interior-use wood but does not hold up well outdoors. We made exact replicas of the spindles, newels, and rail profile, but made the replacements out of premium Cedar. This new rail system should should hold up much better in the long term.

Deck - mid-sized craftsman backyard deck idea in Philadelphia

Three details in particular stand out on this second story deck design. First is the floor board pattern with diagonal lines and a center parting board. Secondly, the rails are matching hardwood however metal pickets add a modern day flair to an otherwise traditional deck. And third, a safety gate at the top of the deck stairs properly encloses and secures the space. Project design and construction by Archadeck of West County in St. Louis Mo.
