Gutters and downspouts are important for the health and well-being of your house. By directing roof runoff away from your foundation walls, this drainage system is your first line of defense against basement or crawl space flooding. An expansive outdoor umbrella brings shade when it's needed and sparkle when it isn't. Those seated beneath enjoy the sounds of the fountain embedded in the ledger stone wall, fragrance from the native plants on the slope, and quite possibly the scent of BBQ too!
The umbrella is stored on red flag days, as are the cushions that sit on new, metal seating. The furnishings themself can safely stay in position.

A well-established Toyon sits just outside of Zone 0. It's branches are kept trimmed away from both the wood siding and the roof. It is higher mass than we would now plant this close to a home. That noted, while no plant is fire proof, Toyon is known for its ability to stay healthy in high, dry heat. It is supported by smart irrigation.

The live Oak is now trimmed away from the roof for safety and clearance of solar panels. This was done over a period of years to ensure no more than 10-15% of the tree was ever cut at one time. Now there are no Oak limbs over the roof, yet the Aoyagis still basque in its shade and the habitat it provides for birds and lizards (and a million other creatures).

The addition of two small puppies meant some added defenses needed to be installed. This panel fence was put in to keep the curious pups safe from any unwanted guests! It also made for a beautiful back drop to the landscape in the foreground, acting as a canvas.

We have been busy in Mead - and here is another home that we re-roofed there due to hail damage. This homeowner wanted a Class IV Impact Resistant shingle. So we installed CertainTeed Northgate Max Defense Class IV shingles in the color Pewter. We also upgraded the ventilation on this house by change the turtle vents on the roof out and replacing them with ridge venting.

Can you imagine a more delightful place to sit? Views include a rewilded Verdugo Mountain hillside beyond the landscape's own tree canopy. The sound of birds and the gurgling water have enticed the homeowners to spend more time here. On red flag days, the cushions and wood tables come inside. The metal furnishings stay.

Ember resistant gravel replaced combustible organic mulch at the base of this well established tree. This helps protect both the tree and the home from ignition. Well established, the tree's annual trimming schedule, which includes clipping off these small shoots and keeping limbs from touching the roof and eves met insurance and LA County Fire Department standards.

Our introduction to the Tahoe site was in late winter, on a clear sunny day with filtered light and long shadows through snow-laden fir and pine bows. It made a strong impression, stored for future consideration but the impetus for the design came soon after the spring snow melt. A powerful sense of horizontal layering of vegetation and various stages of decomposing downed timber on the two-acre site, juxtaposed with pine and fir trees and the dense canopy of the surrounding forest. The site is located near the historic 1960 Olympic Nordic track, situated on the edge of wetlands and seasonal streams.
The homeowners were previous clients and dreamt of having a retreat in the Sierras away from their home base in Berkeley, CA. Among skiers, bike riders, hikers, and boaters, they found the ideal central location for their home base near Lake Tahoe.
The home is organized as a series of linked spaces, each providing a unique sensory experience and connection to different parts of the site, both vertically and horizontally. The design includes extensive use of glass to create a true indoor/outdoor connection and maximize natural light. At the center of the site are two large fir trees, which the building respectfully wraps around in an L shape to create a focal point in the landscaped courtyard.
A refined, context-driven palette of natural materials including cedar, oak, fir, and steel is used to harmoniously blend in among the surroundings. The construction includes advanced details such as thermally broken steel beams supporting layered roof planes engineered to hold snow rather than shed it. Designed to resist significant load, we exposed the steel structure as a recurring element in the interior spaces. The resulting columns and support beams contribute to the familiar design aspects of each room and provide a better understanding of how the building was constructed. The second floor features cantilevered volumes that reach out into the nearby evergreen limbs, likening the experience to being in a tree house. The house incorporates features such as radiant heating, solar panels, and operable windows for passive cooling. Fire safety measures include the use of naturally fire-resistant materials, a Class A roof construction, sprinklers, and drought-tolerant landscaping beyond the defensible space.

This is an organic Lime Wash done with a true lime wash product as opposed to a brick mortar or concrete that is often seen on new houses. This product can be applied as a solid coating making the surface completely white, or can be applied and "washed off" in many artistic ways, as seen here. If you hate your brick or just want something unique this is a great option!
