A departure from the ordinary box, this angular home is nestled in a forest-like setting. This young professional couple fell for its big open living space and good bones, and made the house theirs when they moved to Bloomington in 2015. Though the space was defined by interesting angles and a soaring ceiling, natural light and that beautiful tall stone fireplace, it was outdated. Some spaces were oddly chopped off and others were too open to use well.In the end, SYI did what we don't usually do: put up walls instead of taking them down. (Well, to be fair, we put up some and took down others.) A brand new kitchen anchors the space for these avid cooks, while new walls define a walk-in pantry, office nook and reading space. The new walls also help define the home’s private spaces—they tuck a powder room and guest room away down a hall, so they aren't awkwardly right off the living space. Unifying floor and finishes but breaking up the palette with punches of color, SYI transformed the lofty room to a space that is timeless in both style and layout.

Without question, this is a lovely home. The color makeover amps the curb appeal and better grounds the house with the landscaping. The blue used on the wood siding on the back and sides of the house echoes the blue used in some of the interior rooms.

This project is new construction located in Hinsdale, Illinois. The scope included the kitchen, butler’s pantry, and mudroom. The clients are on the verge of being empty nesters and so they decided to right size. They came from a far more traditional home, and they were open to things outside of their comfort zone. O’Brien Harris Cabinetry in Chicago (OBH) collaborated on the project with the design team but especially with the builder from J. Jordan Homes. The architecture of this home is interesting and defined by large floor to ceiling windows. This created a challenge in the kitchen finding wall space for large appliances. “In essence we only had one wall and so we chose to orient the cooking on that wall. That single wall is defined on the left by a window and on the right by the mudroom. That left us with another challenge – where to place the ovens and refrigerator. We then created a vertically clad wall disguising appliances which floats in between the kitchen and dining room”, says Laura O’Brien. The room is defined by interior transom windows and a peninsula was created between the kitchen and the casual dining for separation but also for added storage. To keep it light and open a transparent brass and glass shelving was designed for dishes and glassware located above the peninsula. The butler’s pantry is located behind the kitchen and between the dining room and a lg exterior window to front of the home. Its main function is to house additional appliances. Bedroom - rustic bedroom idea in Seattle

The homeowner’s of this 1 1/2 story home in Minneapolis came to Castle Building & Remodeling hoping to remodel their already finished attic space. Designer Ashley Hansen came up with a functional design within the existing footprint to help achieve all the homeowners’ goals. Originally, the attic space served as a functional bonus space, including storage and a place guests could stay if they were visiting. However, with the finished remodel in mind, the homeowner’s wanted a new owner’s suite with a functioning bathroom, storage space, and a defined office. To achieve these goals, the loft area was bumped out allowing for a full functioning office space and lounging area. Glass doors were utilized to define the bedroom space, but allow the natural light to flood through and maintain the open and airy feel. A 3/4 bathroom was added to the newly defined bedroom space; and the tiled shower and new floating vanity add to the overall modern feel of the suite.
