This Boulder, Colorado remodel by fuentesdesign demonstrates the possibility of renewal in American suburbs, and Passive House design principles. Once an inefficient single story 1,000 square-foot ranch house with a forced air furnace, has been transformed into a two-story, solar powered 2500 square-foot three bedroom home ready for the next generation. The new design for the home is modern with a sustainable theme, incorporating a palette of natural materials including; reclaimed wood finishes, FSC-certified pine Zola windows and doors, and natural earth and lime plasters that soften the interior and crisp contemporary exterior with a flavor of the west. A Ninety-percent efficient energy recovery fresh air ventilation system provides constant filtered fresh air to every room. The existing interior brick was removed and replaced with insulation. The remaining heating and cooling loads are easily met with the highest degree of comfort via a mini-split heat pump, the peak heat load has been cut by a factor of 4, despite the house doubling in size. During the coldest part of the Colorado winter, a wood stove for ambiance and low carbon back up heat creates a special place in both the living and kitchen area, and upstairs loft. This ultra energy efficient home relies on extremely high levels of insulation, air-tight detailing and construction, and the implementation of high performance, custom made European windows and doors by Zola Windows. Zola’s ThermoPlus Clad line, which boasts R-11 triple glazing and is thermally broken with a layer of patented German Purenit®, was selected for the project. These windows also provide a seamless indoor/outdoor connection, with 9′ wide folding doors from the dining area and a matching 9′ wide custom countertop folding window that opens the kitchen up to a grassy court where mature trees provide shade and extend the living space during the summer months. Our Demonstration Home allows clients to experience all facets of home lighting design and control from inside to exterior. Our Lutron Homeworks Lighting Control system automates the exterior areas and several interior areas for a consistent look, energy savings and safety. By integrating recessed lighting at the peaks of the roof and under soffit areas, we are able to showcase the architectural appeal & texture of the brick and stone. Support lighting is accomplished through an embedded up-light in the driveway to illuminate the address block. Several sconces and landscape lighting provide the final layer of lighting design.

Texture and layering define this modern outdoor living entrance. Alterra’s design+build team utilized weathered steel edging to contain a bed of smooth river stone, providing a clean, industrial contrast to the lush turf. By incorporating structural evergreens and a low-profile Japanese Maple, we’ve created a multi-dimensional garden that thrives under the shade of mature oaks. This project demonstrates how a thoughtful master plan can balance hard, architectural lines with soft, organic movement to enhance a home’s natural character.

Look how clean and visually quiet this kitchen can be. There was so little exposed wall left after the cabinetry went in that we didn't overthink using black on the walls. Of course it doesn't "make the room dark". This room has ample light to begin with and at night, a fantastic city lights view is out those doors, so it's as if the walls recede.

This perspective captures the geometric rhythm of the oversized concrete paver walkway. By setting the smooth, light pavers in a bed of dark basalt gravel, our design+build team created a high-contrast entrance that guides the eye toward the front door. The precision of the hardscape installation is balanced by zones of decomposed granite and lush turf, demonstrating a versatile approach to modern landscape architecture. This Tuscan style gate in reclaimed wood gate could have easily been pulled out of a villa in Tuscany! Nonetheless, it was custom designed and hand made by Dynamic Garage Door's skilled designers and experienced craftsmen. Working with centuries-old reclaimed wood is a skill that requires a taste for the finer things in life much like aged wine. We strive to conserve the authentic and natural characteristics that mother nature has given every piece of lumber we collect from our supplying lumber yards in California. This particular gate was made by hand using reclaimed oak wood, a species that commonly yields earthy brown tones that played well with this home's existing rock walls and natural landscaping. Beefy knocker pulls were used to decorate and reinforce that rough, rustic appearance you would find on doors located in the Tuscan Riviera. Our designer, Mario Collazo, pulled his knowledge of authentic Tuscan architecture fusing it together with the home's existing color scheme and surfaces as an art canvas to further elaborate and enhance the home's Tuscan architectural taste. All of the small details like the embedded step light into the concrete and soldiered brick detail in the concrete overlay at all patio grade changes were handled by ela and were designed to add additional safety and cosmetic appeal at the same time.
