The project’s goal is to introduce more affordable contemporary homes for Triangle Area housing. This 1,800 SF modern ranch-style residence takes its shape from the archetypal gable form and helps to integrate itself into the neighborhood. Although the house presents a modern intervention, the project’s scale and proportional parameters integrate into its context.
Natural light and ventilation are passive goals for the project. A strong indoor-outdoor connection was sought by establishing views toward the wooded landscape and having a deck structure weave into the public area. North Carolina’s natural textures are represented in the simple black and tan palette of the facade.

Our clients wanted to maximize the potential of this dramatically-placed home site while incorporating modern, energy-saving materials. Don Stuart Architecture designed the perfect custom home that took full advantage of the parameters of this Spring Creek lot, while connecting beautifully with the dramatic north, west, and southern views. The home was built using customized Energreen Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), and is one of the most energy efficient homes in the valley. The home also features a Heat Recovery Ventilation system, and has very high insulative properties and sound qualities. Khyber Lane is modern and extremely energy-efficient, but it is also a comfortable and beautiful place to live. Rich warm-toned wood beams and mouldings accent the open living spaces, while the natural slate flooring complements the beauty of the hardwood throughout. The luxury of the ensuite bathroom is the perfect setting for a relaxing soak after a day on the slopes. Our clients are extremely pleased with their beautiful mountain custom home.

The pictures below are of a Riven Slate floor at a house in in the Leeds suburb of Horsforth which had been laid ten years prior. It’s probably difficult to appreciate from the images but the sealer on this floor was well worn through in the high traffic areas making it patchy in places. Without the protection of the sealer dirt was now ingrained in the pores of the stone leaving it looking dull. Riven slate is always tricky to clean thoroughly due to the rough surface and that combined with the ingrained dirt was making it very difficult to keep clean.
The floor now needed to be stripped of old sealer and then resealed and although I can provide a price for this over the phone my preference is to visit the property and survey the floor. In the case the owner had sent me some photographs via email however they were not too clear and so I felt it would be best if I paid the customer a visit to ensure I could give them an accurate price.
The floor was indeed overdue a clean and seal, as suspected dirt was ingrained into the areas where the seal had worn off. The house was home to a very busy family, so the area was subject to the significant traffic. I carried out a test clean on a small area and they were surprised by the results, when you live with a floor for so long you don’t notice the very slow decline in its appearance. They agreed to my quote and we arranged a time to return and carry the deep clean out.
When I arrived, I started off by protecting the skirting and surrounding woodwork. Given the rough surface of the floor I first applied Tile Doctor Wax Away which is a very effective coatings remover that is designed for removing wax but works very well in these situations. The product was left to dwell for a round ten minutes so it could get to work breaking down the old sealer and then scrubbed in using a black scrubbing pad fitted to a rotary machine.
This process removed most of the dirt and old sealer, but some stubborn patches remained. To treat these, I replaced the black pad with a coarse 200-grit burnishing pad and finally some handheld diamond burnishing blocks for the edges and corners where more intricate work was required, and the circular pads struggle to reach.
I gave the floor a rinse, and extracted the soil with a wet vacuum, the floor was then left to dry off overnight.
The next day I returned, first the slate floor was checked for moisture using the moisture meter. Once I was happy it was within the correct parameters, I then sealed with four coats of Tile Doctor Seal and Go. This is a modern water-based blend of acrylic polymers that provides both a stain resistant surface seal and a durable low-sheen finish also being water based there’s no smell as it dries.
The sealer really brought the stone to back to life and the lovely colours in the natural stones were now evident. The patchy appearance of the floor was gone, and the customer was happy.
I discussed with them how they should maintain the floor and advised them to use Tile Doctor Neutral Tile Cleaner. This is pH neutral cleaner that won’t prematurely erode the new sealer like the stronger products you find in Supermarkets which are only for use on Vinyl and Ceramic floors.

Inspiration for a large contemporary travertine floor entryway remodel in Calgary with white walls and a black front door

The challenge for this mountain home in Conifer Colorado was to update the kitchen with a mountain look, bringing it into alignment with the rest of the home. Budget parameters prevented fully replacing cabinets, so upper cabinet doors were replaced with a more contemporary door style and all cabinets were refinished. The island was re-designed and replaced with a new shape and new cabinets allowing for more storage. New stainless appliances, engineered stone countertops and slate mosaic tiles for the back-splash completed the project.

2018 HNA Awards Honorable Mention - Concrete Paver - Residential (size less than 3,000 sf)
Contractor: The Sharper Edge Landscaping
Producer: County Materials Corporation
Designer: Paul Bowker
Four different styles of pavers and creative color combinations were used in this residential patio to separate areas and to create a distinctive feel for each space. A combination of modular shaped pavers and paving stones that simulate flagstone aesthetics were combined, creating a unique presentation.
With varying features incorporated throughout the space, fitting each unit into place was a challenge only overcome with precise planning and execution: bullnose pavers were cut to fit the seat wall, fireplace and stair corners, while the flagstone style pavers were cut to fit the square parameters of their area.
Retaining wall units were used to create several functional features and add elevation. Situated against the house, a raised patio with an outdoor kitchen was built with retaining wall units. The same units were used to build stairs leading up to this area, a fireplace and a seating area.
Bullnose pavers were used multiple ways to add functional value and aesthetic appeal. The seat wall near the fireplace is capped with rounded bullnose pavers for guest comfort. They form stair step treads for clear visibility and sure footing, and they form a creative accent course in the large wall.
This patio maximized available space to offer everything the homeowners desired for their outdoor living area: a place to relax, cook, enjoy a fire and unwind in a hot tub. The exceptional colors and styles of pavers adds to the character, and the excellent craftsmanship makes this a special retreat.

1.What is crystallized glass stone(Marmoglass SN002 )?
The micro crystal stone is an innovative product designed as a substitute for the rare natural white marble. It is superior to the natural white marble in terms of characteristics, where the micro crystal stone possesses extreme density making it anti-breakage, giving it zero water absorption qualities, and making it resistant to acidic and alkaline substances. at the pace that mankind is consuming the natural resources in today’s world, the micro crystal stone is the ultimate solution, the superior alternative for the external and internal applications. It is certainly a revolutionary product and the finest construction material of the 21st century.
2.Why choose crystallized glass stone(Marmoglass SN002)?
The micro-crystal stone, also known as the micro-crystal glass, Marmoglass, is a new type of high-level decoration material. It is derived from natural inorganic material through a high temperature process, and it possesses excellent characteristics including the followings:
1. High Performance
The micro-crystal stone has even texture and high density, which makes it crush resistant, anti-bending and high resistant resulting its performance being higher than natural stone. It can be used for long period with minimal damage.
2. Acid-proof alkalinity and anti-corrosion
Not only does the micro-crystal stone posses special micro-crystal characteristics, it also has special glass features such as a fine texture, shiny surface and light reflection effect.
3. Fine Texture
We have the flexibility to manufacture any colors as per customer requirements while also making up the defect of color differences, which exists in natural stone. While the product is widely used for interior and interior decoration of star-level hotels, subways, local landmark buildings, airports, and office building etc, it is more suitable for high-level home decoration.
4. Pollution-resistance and easy maintenance
The micro-crystal is a kind of inorganic crystalline material with stable chemical characteristics. Its acid proof alkalinity and anti-corrosion nature are superior to nature stone, specifically its anti-weather characteristics whereby it is unaffected by the wind or sunlight.
5.A wide application range
The water absorption rare of micro-crystal is quite low, close to zero. Several types of dirty pulps and dyed solution have difficulty in penetrating it. Any dirt on the surface is easily cleaned and it is convenient to mankind.
6. Heat-bend reformation
With the heating method, the micro-crystal can be made into various arched profiles and arched slabs. the process is simple and it allows us to save time, cost, material and resources.
7. No radioactive elements
In the process of manufacturing the micro-crystal stone, we have integrated the elimination of all the harmful radioactive elements that are found in natural stone from its components. It is therefore the safest and most environmentally friendly building material in our modern world.
Crystallized glass can be processed into slab, tile, countertop, column and vanity top, wash basin and etc. It is applicable for flooring, interior and exterior wall cladding, stairs and table. Contributed to the character of no color difference, so it is widely used for top grade hotel, business building shopping mall and such great construction.

Installation Recommendations
Wall Cladding
1.Wall should be leveled and cleaned,
2.Fix the panel on the wall with wire and expansion screw tightly,
3.Fill the space between the panel and the wall with cement mortar of ratio 1:3,
4.Clean the extra mortar and dirt on the surface.
Floor Installation
1.Mark out the baseline of gound level,
2.Mix the mortar with ratio of 1 cement to 4 sand to have semi-day mortar,
3.Lay the mixed mortar in level with a layer of 3-4cm thickness, place the tile over the mortar and adjust the height properly to be leveled,
4.Remove the tile after level adjustment.Put a thin layer of cement powder on the mortar and add water on it to become wet,
5.Put the tile on top and gently knock with rubber hammer until it sealed with the mortar properly. Make sure the tile is leveled and has the same space between each other. Those tiles which are not leveled with others should be removed and repeat the leveling procedure in step 4.Genetally,the space between two tiles should be 2mm for water evaporation and normal expansion.
Daily maintenance of Micro Crystal Stone
1.The laying area of micro crystal stone can only be opened for use or stacking any item on top after at least 24 hours of filling the gap,
2.The ground must be covered with plywood or carpet for protection in case of doing other decoration work after the installation of micro crystal stone floor,
3.In areas like exit and entrance, the surface of micro crystal stone floor should be covered by carpet or plywood to protect it from the damage of abrasion of sand or other hard material.
4.Do not use general floor wax on micro crystal stone,General floor wax is an oil-based wax which is easily stuck to dust.
5.Please use rubber wheels for shopping cart and trolley on micro crystal stone floor, for the hard wheel may scratch and damage the surface,
6.Regular care and maintenance is the key for long lasting of micro crystal stone’s high glossy and reflection.
Important Notice
1.Make sure the ground of laying area is dry and clean before laying mortar. The ratio 1:3(volume ratio) must be strictly followed and no extra water added during the installation progress
2.In the choice of using white cement as the filling material, the strength and quality of the cement must be checked properly.
3.It is not recommended to store micro crystal stone outdoor for long time. It should be covered with rock wool in winter and moved into indoor 2 hours in advance before installation. It also needs to be covered with waterproof cloth when installing during the rainy days outdoor,
4.When using micro crystal stone as ground floor,2mm wild gap must be left between the joints for the benefit of the water vaporization and physical expansion. In the case of large-scale installation, it is recommended to leave an 8mm expansion joint,
5.It is recommended that the area of micro crystal stone to remain-not used-for at least 24 hours and kept 2-3 days before passing or storing items on top.
