They had decided it was time to invest in a fresh, inviting and dedicated workspace where they could be more productive. The desk, which fits seamlessly into the space, features a full stave prime oak worktop finished with a protective oil to provide a superior long-lasting surface. The custom desk cabinetry has been flawlessly spray finished Little Greene Sage Green, which contrasts beautifully with the attractive, natural oak wood desktop. The soothing, muted green paint colour and tailored storage creates a calm, uncluttered setting, perfect for a focused workspace. Customised and crafted for comfort The right storage was vital for our client and this made to measure desk features integrated drawers and a double cupboard putting work essentials right at their fingertips. Every drawer and door functions effortlessly and quietly thanks to the best quality Hafele ironmongery and soft close mechanisms. In this home office design, we also incorporated two matching oak wall-mounted shelves which follow the angle of the ceiling and a low-level built-in bookcase which fits perfectly under the sloped ceiling. Made to measure curved corner desk The curved corner desk has been constructed with integrated drawers, cupboard space, cable management tray on the underside, and an open bookshelf unit to one side. Having a curved corner desk in front of the window is a strategic decision that combines ergonomic comfort and enhanced use of space. The curved shape brings the workspace closer to the body, allowing for a more natural, wraparound working experience that pairs well with the natural light and views from the window. The design also delivers additional comfort, thanks to the spacious full depth leg room underneath. A curved L-shape design also makes the desk feel less dominant than a traditional straight desk, preventing the room from feeling cramped while still providing ample workspace. Solid prime oak work top The desk’s beautiful solid prime oak top provides a stable, heavy surface for working. It also offers exceptional strength and durability. While oak resists dents and scratches, it can be sanded and refinished, when necessary, to restore its condition. Real wood surfaces, such as oak, have natural antibacterial properties, which can help maintain a cleaner working environment too. A full stave worktop is a premium one-piece surface made from a continuous oak plank (stave) that runs the entire length of the worktop creating a luxurious, linear, and consistent appearance and showcasing the natural beauty of the timber.

From Mid-Century Classic to the Present An iconic design updated with comfort, function, and flow for today. A Remodel That Balances Past and Present What started as a desire to update a classic Eichler soon became an exploration of how Mid-Century Modern design can successfully evolve for today. The client, a tech professional with a passion for scuba diving and underwater photography, wanted a home that would both honor its original character and feel tailored to his daily life. A lifelong technology enthusiast, he still owns the very first Mac desktop he saved up for as a teenager working at Radio Shack, a detail that underscores his appreciation for design that melds function and form. Honoring Separation While Expanding Possibility Unlike many contemporary remodels where walls are opened up to create expansive living spaces, this project took a more restrained approach. The client valued the defined rooms of the original plan and wanted to preserve as much wall space as possible for displaying his large-format underwater photography. The emphasis was not on dramatic spatial reinvention, but on thoughtful refinements. Klopf Architecture shaped a gallery-like backdrop while also expanding the primary suite, modernizing materials and fixtures throughout the home, and improving the functionality and layout of the kitchen. The finished home feels at once timeless and renewed, an Eichler that continues to inspire while fully supporting the lifestyle of its present-day owner. A major turning point came mid-design. The original project brief had not included an addition, but as the reconfiguration of the primary bedroom and bath unfolded, it became clear that an expansion was the best approach to achieve the client’s vision of a more spacious suite. Fortunately, the adjustment came at a stage when revisions were still manageable and was integrated seamlessly, showing how thoughtful course corrections can strengthen a project rather than hinder it. Navigating Challenges With Precision The design development included multiple conceptual rounds, balancing preservation with subtle expansion. During construction, an existing post previously thought to be load-bearing turned out not to be. The structural engineer was able to pivot quickly, and both the post and the cross beam that had been intended to replace it could be omitted, allowing the original rhythm of the Eichler beam bays to be preserved. Sustainability was not just a checklist item, but a way to align the home with the client’s values of simplicity, efficiency, and long-term functionality. R-38 roof insulation reduced energy usage, solar panels with battery storage provided independence and resilience, and passive comfort strategies eliminated the need forenergy-intensive air conditioning. An electric vehicle charger and an on-demand hot water recirculation system (with call buttons as opposed to having constant circulation) add to the home’s long-term efficiency factors. Together, these moves created a home that is quieter, more comfortable, and better equipped for the future, qualities that supported the client’s pragmatic approach to design and living lightly. Details That Respect the Eichler DNA The remodel carries forward the Eichler’s original spirit while introducing new layers of modern livability. Originally, the house was approached along a deep, narrow walk, with the garage on one side and the house on the other, leaving the front door tucked far back within this chasm-like space. By pulling the entry forward, the design reshaped the arrival experience, creating a clearer threshold and a natural drop-off zone for bags, shoes, and keys. This shift also made room for a custom bench at the entry that extends seamlessly through the glass sidelight. The bench and drop-off zone now work together as a single, integrated sequence that supports everyday living while offering a tactile reminder of Eichler’s philosophy of connectedness. At the client’s request, Klopf reintroduced a classic Eichler gesture by extending the exterior siding into the entry and living room. The detail reinforces a sense of indoor/outdoor continuity while providing a subtle architectural surface that allows the client’s photography to take visual precedence. The signature concrete masonry wall at the front was reconstructed using blocks sourced to match the originals, now strengthened with rebar for seismic resilience while maintaining a private outdoor courtyard, visually extending the kitchen outward. A decorative trellis element, a detail borrowed from a neighboring Eichler, restores a familiar mid-century modern architectural motif. At the courtyard entry door, a custom etched glass sidelight with an ocean-themed design featuring kelp and jellyfish serves as a subtle homage to the client’s passion for deep-sea diving. Landscaping became an integral part of the overall transformation. The homeowner engaged landscape architect Randi Johnsen of Third Nature Studio to shape a series of calm, inviting outdoor rooms that read as a natural extension of the interiors. While technically outside of the core construction scope, the landscape design proved central to achieving a sense of completeness and connectedness across the property. Such whole-property considerations often emerge as design ideas take shape, underscoring the importance of flexibility in planning and budgeting, as well as close collaboration among the design team starting early in the process. The Value of Evolving Scope As with many custom residential projects, the scope evolved during the design process. What began as a targeted remodel grew to include a new/expanded primary suite, a rebuilt CMU patio wall for strength and longevity, and a solar panel array and battery storage for energy resilience and carbon-reduction. Each thoughtful decision represented a conscious investment in the home’s performance and character, rather than a cost overrun. The result was a project delivered on schedule, tailored precisely to the client’s lifestyle, and positioned to add long-term value both functionally and aesthetically. By embracing scope evolution as an opportunity rather than a challenge, and relying on good design paired with transparent communication, this remodel demonstrates how Eichler homes can be adapted for contemporary living without erasing their DNA. The Master Bedroom on the top floor is a perfect example of how using yellow can be the perfect addition to a mostly neutral space. This bedroom is a perfect mix of modern but yet timeless, and with functionality being a high priority we utilized some of the room for a home office too!

This built is at the end of a long room with a kitchen at the other end, a dining table in the middle and a desk nearby. This is a small 1600 ft house. Smart storage is needed. It made since to combine dining, and office storage because they share the same space. Shelves are notorious for looking untidy. Notice there is balanced open space and not tons of little objects. I started with what needed to be stored first, the printer and office supplies on the bottom shelf. If this built in was closer to the dining table I may have wanted to put everyday dishes on it. Things that would be easy to grab. Instead the easy to grab items came from the office. Behind the built-in door is a shredder. The deep drawers hold the ugly office and art supplies. I choose a small desk because the space is small and needed to be used as a walk through to the backyard. Also the larger the desk the more stuff that accumulates on it. A smaller surface is a natural system that encourages tidiness. The key is that is also needs to look good, so people honor it and usually take care of it. I call it creating a sacred space that demands respect. It really works, like magic. But only if everything has a place and if not something needs to go. Purging is powerful!

Remodeling the kitchen and laundry room greatly expanded the possibilities for storage and organization and created an entirely fresh appeal. The ceilings throughout the home had been paneled with warm, gorgeous wood. To build on that detail, we incorporated hints of wood in the new design at the range hood, sink cabinetry, desktop, and open shelving. There was also existing tile flooring that the homeowner wanted to keep, so light, neutral cabinetry was the perfect complement to the wood and tile, brightening the entire space. The two-tiered wrap around peninsula offers an abundance of room for guests to sit and eat or visit with those in the kitchen. It also serves to delineate the kitchen from the living area. Although the kitchen’s footprint wasn’t altered, we did move the stove to the back wall. This change optimized functionality and set a dramatic focal point. The professional-style, six-burner gas range is sure to be a high-performer when cooking any meal. On special occasions when numerous dishes are on the menu, the convection microwave will come in handy, operating as a second oven or a microwave. The under-counter dish drawers provide efficient storage and eliminate the need for pulling serving pieces down from an overhead cabinet. A custom pegboard organizer holds each dish securely in place to prevent shifting when the drawer is opened and closed. Conveniently located near the dishwasher, it makes unloading a breeze! Open shelving provides additional room to keep items close at hand and adds to the cottage feel. These homeowners have chosen to shelve small appliances in their newly remodeled laundry room that’s directly off the kitchen. In this way, it serves as a second “pantry.” Adjacent to the kitchen, there is now a beautiful workspace. Its glass upper cabinets are a fantastic place to display pottery, dishware, and cookbooks. We borrowed a few inches on the end of a bordering kitchen cabinet to construct a message center and mail sorting console. What a clever way to create a spot for pending paperwork while keeping it tucked behind the cabinet doors.

This custom built desktop shelving unit, was commissioned by a gentleman with several larger pieces of electronic radio and computer equipment. He was looking for a solution in being able to have an attractive, but functional piece of furniture that enabled him to setup and utilize his equipment, while still being able to access the back of the equipment for wire changes and maintenance. The solution we presented was this desktop radio console with three sliding shelves, carefully measured to be a custom fit for the customer's equipment. Each shelf can support over 90 pounds of weight and will slide all the way out of the overall unit for full maintenance access. A solid vertical board is centered on the second level for mounting, a computer monitor and additional storage space is present on the shelves above and to either side. The unit is made entirely out of solid white oak wood and finished glossy. The wood grain was carefully positioned throughout the project to ensure the grain flowed and matched in an attractive way. Traditional joinery methods were used throughout, to come together into a very solid piece of furniture that will last for years.

This custom Cherry executive desk was designed for a client in Brighton, Michigan, who had been searching for the right desk for their home office but simply couldn’t find what they needed anywhere else. Crafted from solid USA-sourced Cherry hardwood, the desk was custom dyed and stained to complement the existing finishes in the room, creating a warm, cohesive addition to the space. Functionality was built directly into the design. Grommets integrated into the desktop route cords to a hidden cable management shelf inside the desk, allowing everything to connect discreetly to an electrical outlet located in the floor below. The result is a clean, uncluttered workspace without sacrificing everyday convenience. The substantial waterfall-style sides and clean lines give the desk a refined executive presence while allowing the natural character of the Cherry to remain the focus.
