Our clients loved this tree-lined older, established neighborhood. They bought a house there that needed substantial renovations as it probably had not been updated in 30-40 years. They contacted Shapiro & Co in hopes that they would be able to transition an older, outdated house to a home that retained its character but was redesigned to meet the current needs of the family. The house foyer was very small and not accomodating for visitors so the architects relocated the entry and added a welcoming front porch. After an assessment of the existing conditions, it was determined that the kitchen, while serving its purpose in the 1940s, was completely out of character and in the wrong location for a modern family's needs. So the architects relocated and created an entirely new kitchen, and family and dining spaces. As indicative of homes in the ’40s and '50s, the master bedroom and bathroom were very small and not meeting current needs. Therefore we repurposed one bedroom into the master bath and dressing area and reorganized and enlarged the master bedroom area. The original second-floor plan was very small and confining. We captured some attic space and were able to create two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and a central common room for the children. By a sensitive assessment of the client’s needs and while maintaining the charm of the home, we were able to completely renovate and enlarge the house while keeping it in context with the beautiful neighborhood. When full-time Massachusetts residents contemplate building a second home in Telluride, Colorado the question immediately arises; does it make most sense to hire a regionally based Rocky Mountain architect or a sea level architect conveniently located for all of the rigorous collaboration required for successful bespoke home design. Determined to prove the latter true, Siemasko + Verbridge accompanied the potential client as they scoured the undulating Telluride landscape in search of the perfect house site. The selected site’s harmonious balance of untouched meadow rising up to meet the edge of an aspen grove and the opposing 180 degree view of Wilson’s Range spoke to everyone. A plateau just beyond a fork in the meadow provided a natural flatland, requiring little excavation and yet the right amount of upland slope to capture the views. The intrinsic character of the site was only enriched by an elk trail and snake-rail fence. Establishing the expanse of Wilson’s range would be best served by rejecting the notion of selected views, the central sweeping curve of the roof inverts a small saddle in the range with which it is perfectly aligned. The soaring wave of custom windows and the open floor plan make the relatively modest house feel sizable despite its footprint of just under 2,000 square feet. Officially a two bedroom home, the bunk room and loft allow the home to comfortably sleep ten, encouraging large gatherings of family and friends. The home is completely off the grid in response to the unique and fragile qualities of the landscape. Great care was taken to respect the regions vernacular through the use of mostly native materials and a palette derived from the terrain found at 9,820 feet above sea level. This vintage Turkish Kilim pulls together a bold mix of colors. The motif alternates between flatweave solid stripes and ornate embroidered sections. While the flatweave sections are the same on the front as they are on the back, the embroidered sections have an unfinished back similar to hand-knotted rugs. History of This Design: Kilims represent an important and widespread tradition in rug weaving, as they are commonly produced in villages and by nomadic tribes. Their motifs are determined by the individual weaver and often produced by memory, giving each kilim a unique character that reflects the tastes and perspective of individual artisans. Because of the manner in which they are woven, kilims contain geometric and rectilinear patterns — the tight curvilinear floral motifs found in many hand-knotted rugs cannot be produced with this technique.

Our client in Inverallochy, Fraserburgh wanted a modern and functional kitchen with multiple cooking options, an island with an eating area, and a coffee station. In order to meet these requirements, we had to determine how to block up a window without sacrificing their 180-degree sea view. We opted for Nolte's SoftLack range with Silver MatrixArt handleless trims, paired with integrated lighting. The Sahara beige-coloured furniture mixed with Soft Lack Deep Blue provides a modern yet warm atmosphere. Dekton Trilium worktops with mitred waterfall ends were chosen for durability and style. A comprehensive range of NEFF appliances was installed, including two ovens, a microwave, and a coffee centre. We also added a large induction hob with ceiling extraction and Liebherr fridge and freezer with built-in ice-making. Among the additional features are a Blanco undermounted sink and a Quooker Flex stainless steel instant boiling water tap. Karndean flooring was used for its aesthetic appeal and durability. Tall units were built into the ceiling, and a section of the stone wall was left exposed, adding character to the space. Interested in a kitchen that meets all your needs? The garden borders a natural reserve, and the whole area’s character is determined by beech and birch forests and heaths. The design was chosen to define a garden that is not subject to time and trends. The sleek lines come into a beautiful contrast with the natural shapes of the edges of the woodland. The slopes of ornamental grasses are a reference to the lush moors of the surrounding fields. The most logical place for the pool would have been right next to the house, but as a landscape designer, I chose to place the swimming pool deep in the garden. This totally changes the perception of the garden as a whole. By making a path to somewhere, you amplify the emotion that place rouses. The pool and the bathhouse* are now amongst the planes of ornamental grasses, next to the edge of the woodland. As a result, you get to feel as part of nature. Strong horizontal lines tune in the proportions of the house with the proportions of the garden and landscape. Thus, the garden is continued in its surroundings and makes use of the horizontal lines to anchor itself into the area. *The concept of the swimming pool and bathhouse design was developed in collaboration with BOS architects.

Art project. Honolulu. Hawaii. Art studio Sergey Konstantinov. San Francisco. 15/40 in. twelve color inkjet print on canvas. Limited edition, signed by the artist. Painting Bookshelves. Artist Sergey Konstantinov. The creative proposal for this painting originated from Ann Getty, who desired a painting of a bookshelf. I designed a composition of two bookshelves side-by-side in a diptych style. Each bookshelf is divided into four parts, exhibiting disciplines of the humanities: theatre, literature, and art. The masks displayed at the top shelves are recognized as a symbol of theatre and drama, and originate from Greek mythology. I sketched the masks to determine the placement of the comedy and tragedy character. Old but precious books line the middle shelves, with each book presenting a title of Getty’s favorite author. The delicate art of blue and white Porcelain Delft pottery is displayed below the literary works.
