This project entailed the draining of a 200,000 cubic foot pond which was originally constructed in the early 1900s in order to install a water feature. I had previously dammed the lower pond, which was roughly equivalent in size to the upper pond, with stonework to match the existing stone walkways. The lower pond will be utilized as a catch-basin in an effort to keep the upper pond’s water level at a sufficient height through a pump system.
After the removal of over a 100 years worth of sediment, I began constructing several terraces, stone steps, stone walkways, and several stone retaining walls — all stone features were built without the use of mortar so as to allow plant growth, such as vines and flowering plants to grow through the stonework.
The difficulty I faced, oddly enough, was trying to be as random as possible with the placement of the stones, so as to make the stonework appear as though it had been built alongside some of the pre-existing 100-year-old stone walls scattered across other areas of the property. In essence, I forced myself to leave larger gaps in between stones where I typically wouldn’t, as well as leave some stones protruding from the wall, and allowing the wall to slightly fluctuate in height. All of which required me to become a perfectionist of randomness, which was quite trying of me.
The top 2 feet of the 2,000-foot upper pond was then faced and retained with stone.

With a narrow driveway and leaning concrete retaining walls, parking was a major challenge at this 1938 brick Tudor on Spokane's South Hill. Crumbling concrete stairs added another layer of difficulty, and after a particularly rough winter, the homeowners were ready for a change. The failing concrete walls were replaced with stacked boulders, which created space for a new, wider driveway. Natural stone steps offer access to the backyard, while the new front stairs and sidewalk provide a safe route to the front door. The original iron railings were preserved and modified to be reused with the new stairs.

This project, sitting on a little more than 3.5 acres on Rivercrest was completed in 3 years with a total square footage of more than 26,000 square feet.
Typically modern homes are smaller. At a certain size, usually around 4,000 square feet, the difficulty with modern or contemporary architecture becomes scale, and the minimalist idea gets lost. Whenever you get to this scale of house at over 26,000 square feet, this problem adds a layer of complexity.

The clients were having difficulty melding both of their design styles, so they asked Mussman Design to assist them. While Greg is more contemporary, Seleda is more traditional in her design aesthetic. This space reflects a nod to both clients particular wishes. Photo: Stan Mussman

There were a few difficulties in making this kitchen any better than how it was. There was a separate staircase that had access to the second floor which was located in the kitchen. This left just enough room to push the dining room to one side. Then, there was the porch. A really nice panoramic view of the back, but was somehow under-used by the family during the summer months. Then, it was the size of the kitchen. It simply was way too small for a growing family, and while it had a peninsular in place, the flow just didn’t work. I remember watching them one day demonstrating how awkward it was using the kitchen. We got it! We had our marching orders to go and figure out how to make this kitchen work for this family.
Everything in the room was fair play. The design was done to make the kitchen very open. For a few ideas, we incorporated the porch in the kitchen by using the nana wall idea but it ended up being too cost prohibitive to do so. We then decided to do a permanent fix by using a commercial glass wall application. Once we figured that out, we moved back inside and removed the staircase. This gave us two added benefits. One allowed us to really reconfigure the kitchen and the other opened up the second floor for a huge built in closet system.
We relocated the windows, added a fire place with a built In TV above. From there, it was onto the kitchen itself which contained a huge Island with seating, large kitchen sink and built in appliances which was set up in a way to take advantage of the new layout. We re-positioned the kitchen facing the beautiful views outside rather than looking towards a wall. Now, when you enter the house up the entry stairs, the kitchen now draws you into the magnificent new open space. This is now setup for entertaining, relaxation, hanging out and most of all, preparing meals in a room where you only have to leave if you want to.
This one was all about the design. Design was what made this space. Setting this space up for success was crucial, and this kitchen is a great example of how design can cover a multitude of sins in Kitchen designs.
… Just close your eyes for a second and imagine waking up one winter morning and having a cup of coffee and watching the snow fall through those huge windows, leaning up against those 3D feature walls while watching the kids sitting around the table enjoying those warm radiant heated floors in this spacious kitchen…..

This used to be the entrance to the apartment in this duplex apartment, now we built a panel wall hinged on invisible hinges. Push the panel open and you instant access to the existing apartment door. The reveal ties into the room lining up the panels perfectly. (its not the photo, this room is Not square) difficulty level was extremely high making this work.

We designed and constructed the master bathroom in this Fulton Award winning custom home, built by Merv Miller Builder LLC. The bathroom won Best Bath in it's category and the home was awarded Best Single Family Home in the Lancaster BIA's Parade of Homes, 2014. We worked with kitchen and bath designer, Pat Caulfied, for this project and were thrilled with the end result.
The home craftsman style but the open concept and use of lighter and painted wood finishes instead of traditional dark woods makes the house feel light and spacious.
Universal Design makes things safer, easier, and more convenient for everyone. This bath was designed using the principles of universal design, which is the term used for a space can be used by the widest range of people possible.
Everyone faces difficulties at any given point in their lives – from a sprained ankle to a serious injury – universal design addresses the needs of people using the space for the longevity of the space.
At Re Bath & More, we feel that a universal space can be beautiful as well as functional. One of the key points we incorporated into this bath was to design a space for all the senses. As we age, our vision yellows and depth perception can become an issue. By using a high contrast of light colored flooring, darker cabinets and lighter countertops there is a clear definition of space. The floor is also textured for safety in walking on a wet area and the long vanity can provide support when walking through the space.

“I wanted to use IKEA cabinets and knew how important it was to get the exact measurements and SKUs correct, so I needed a designer. I also already had a strong vision of how I wanted the kitchen to look, so I didn’t want to pay thousands of dollars to start from scratch,” she says.
This was especially important because her pre-existing kitchen presented a lack of wall and countertop space and difficulty in placing the ovens and microwave where she and her husband wanted.
“The biggest obstacle was the lack of wall space (the space has lots of French doors/windows). So we knew we needed an island and a big one at that. Our island is almost 11 feet long! This was also compounded because we wanted to install a double oven which took up more wall space!” she says.
Enter IKD’s design team that made the entire design process very customer — and budget — friendly.
“Our budget, including all new appliances and contractor labor costs was around $30K. But I had done pre-research and formulated our budget knowing that we would be using IKEA for both countertops and cabinets. If we’re just talking IKEA materials for cabinetry and countertops, we came in at an amazing $12K!”
Specifically, Kate combined IKEA’s SEKTION cabinetry framework system with IKEA’s TINGSRYD Black door fronts with wood effect.
This look was complemented by IKEA’s custom KASKER quartz countertops (outsourced through Caesarstone); a Whirlpool dishwasher; and a GE double oven, among others.
The result?
What was once a crowded and inefficient kitchen is now a stunning open floorplan IKEA kitchen featuring an impressive center island and plenty of counter space.
She concludes: “My favorite part is the open layout that allows me to face the living room while standing at the island and cooking.”
Let’s see how Kate’s kitchen came together!

1.What is crystallized glass stone(Marmoglass SN002 )?
The micro crystal stone is an innovative product designed as a substitute for the rare natural white marble. It is superior to the natural white marble in terms of characteristics, where the micro crystal stone possesses extreme density making it anti-breakage, giving it zero water absorption qualities, and making it resistant to acidic and alkaline substances. at the pace that mankind is consuming the natural resources in today’s world, the micro crystal stone is the ultimate solution, the superior alternative for the external and internal applications. It is certainly a revolutionary product and the finest construction material of the 21st century.
2.Why choose crystallized glass stone(Marmoglass SN002)?
The micro-crystal stone, also known as the micro-crystal glass, Marmoglass, is a new type of high-level decoration material. It is derived from natural inorganic material through a high temperature process, and it possesses excellent characteristics including the followings:
1. High Performance
The micro-crystal stone has even texture and high density, which makes it crush resistant, anti-bending and high resistant resulting its performance being higher than natural stone. It can be used for long period with minimal damage.
2. Acid-proof alkalinity and anti-corrosion
Not only does the micro-crystal stone posses special micro-crystal characteristics, it also has special glass features such as a fine texture, shiny surface and light reflection effect.
3. Fine Texture
We have the flexibility to manufacture any colors as per customer requirements while also making up the defect of color differences, which exists in natural stone. While the product is widely used for interior and interior decoration of star-level hotels, subways, local landmark buildings, airports, and office building etc, it is more suitable for high-level home decoration.
4. Pollution-resistance and easy maintenance
The micro-crystal is a kind of inorganic crystalline material with stable chemical characteristics. Its acid proof alkalinity and anti-corrosion nature are superior to nature stone, specifically its anti-weather characteristics whereby it is unaffected by the wind or sunlight.
5.A wide application range
The water absorption rare of micro-crystal is quite low, close to zero. Several types of dirty pulps and dyed solution have difficulty in penetrating it. Any dirt on the surface is easily cleaned and it is convenient to mankind.
6. Heat-bend reformation
With the heating method, the micro-crystal can be made into various arched profiles and arched slabs. the process is simple and it allows us to save time, cost, material and resources.
7. No radioactive elements
In the process of manufacturing the micro-crystal stone, we have integrated the elimination of all the harmful radioactive elements that are found in natural stone from its components. It is therefore the safest and most environmentally friendly building material in our modern world.
Crystallized glass can be processed into slab, tile, countertop, column and vanity top, wash basin and etc. It is applicable for flooring, interior and exterior wall cladding, stairs and table. Contributed to the character of no color difference, so it is widely used for top grade hotel, business building shopping mall and such great construction.

Installation Recommendations
Wall Cladding
1.Wall should be leveled and cleaned,
2.Fix the panel on the wall with wire and expansion screw tightly,
3.Fill the space between the panel and the wall with cement mortar of ratio 1:3,
4.Clean the extra mortar and dirt on the surface.
Floor Installation
1.Mark out the baseline of gound level,
2.Mix the mortar with ratio of 1 cement to 4 sand to have semi-day mortar,
3.Lay the mixed mortar in level with a layer of 3-4cm thickness, place the tile over the mortar and adjust the height properly to be leveled,
4.Remove the tile after level adjustment.Put a thin layer of cement powder on the mortar and add water on it to become wet,
5.Put the tile on top and gently knock with rubber hammer until it sealed with the mortar properly. Make sure the tile is leveled and has the same space between each other. Those tiles which are not leveled with others should be removed and repeat the leveling procedure in step 4.Genetally,the space between two tiles should be 2mm for water evaporation and normal expansion.
Daily maintenance of Micro Crystal Stone
1.The laying area of micro crystal stone can only be opened for use or stacking any item on top after at least 24 hours of filling the gap,
2.The ground must be covered with plywood or carpet for protection in case of doing other decoration work after the installation of micro crystal stone floor,
3.In areas like exit and entrance, the surface of micro crystal stone floor should be covered by carpet or plywood to protect it from the damage of abrasion of sand or other hard material.
4.Do not use general floor wax on micro crystal stone,General floor wax is an oil-based wax which is easily stuck to dust.
5.Please use rubber wheels for shopping cart and trolley on micro crystal stone floor, for the hard wheel may scratch and damage the surface,
6.Regular care and maintenance is the key for long lasting of micro crystal stone’s high glossy and reflection.
Important Notice
1.Make sure the ground of laying area is dry and clean before laying mortar. The ratio 1:3(volume ratio) must be strictly followed and no extra water added during the installation progress
2.In the choice of using white cement as the filling material, the strength and quality of the cement must be checked properly.
3.It is not recommended to store micro crystal stone outdoor for long time. It should be covered with rock wool in winter and moved into indoor 2 hours in advance before installation. It also needs to be covered with waterproof cloth when installing during the rainy days outdoor,
4.When using micro crystal stone as ground floor,2mm wild gap must be left between the joints for the benefit of the water vaporization and physical expansion. In the case of large-scale installation, it is recommended to leave an 8mm expansion joint,
5.It is recommended that the area of micro crystal stone to remain-not used-for at least 24 hours and kept 2-3 days before passing or storing items on top.
