Gut renovation of 1880's townhouse. New vertical circulation and dramatic rooftop skylight bring light deep in to the middle of the house. A new stair to roof and roof deck complete the light-filled vertical volume. Programmatically, the house was flipped: private spaces and bedrooms are on lower floors, and the open plan Living Room, Dining Room, and Kitchen is located on the 3rd floor to take advantage of the high ceiling and beautiful views. A new oversized front window on 3rd floor provides stunning views across New York Harbor to Lower Manhattan. The renovation also included many sustainable and resilient features, such as the mechanical systems were moved to the roof, radiant floor heating, triple glazed windows, reclaimed timber framing, and lots of daylighting. Now is the time to plant bare root hedging plants and trees as well as spring bulbs for that wonderful burst of colour following the dark winter days and nights. Your efforts will really pay off next Spring and you will have beds, borders and pots brimming with not only spring colour but also wonderful scent. When planting bulbs in the open ground, with daffodils the most natural method is simply to throw them and plant them where they land. Tulips look good in large groups of 20 plus and also in pots and need to be planted at a deeper depth of about 8 inches below soil level. Daffodils should be around 5-6 inches and crocus about 4 inches. With the different depths, you can have a succession of flowers planted one on top of the other in pots so your Spring containers will look great for many weeks to come.
