The design objective was to build a house for a couple recently married who both had kids from previous marriages. How to bridge two families together?
The design looks forward in terms of how people live today. The home is an experiment in transparency and solid form; removing borders and edges from outside to inside the house, and to really depict “flowing and endless space”. The house floor plan is derived by pushing and pulling the house’s form to maximize the backyard and minimize the public front yard while welcoming the sun in key rooms by rotating the house 45-degrees to true north. We engineered the house to be smart which not only looks modern but acts modern; every aspect of user control is simplified to a digital touch button, whether lights, shades, blinds, HVAC, communication, audio, video, or security. We developed a planning module based on a 6-foot square room size and a 6-foot wide connector called an interstitial space for hallways, bathrooms, stairs and mechanical, which keeps the rooms pure and uncluttered. The house is 6,200 SF of livable space, plus garage and basement gallery for a total of 9,200 SF. A large formal foyer celebrates the entry and opens up to the living, dining, kitchen and family rooms all focused on the rear garden. The east side of the second floor is the Master wing and a center bridge connects it to the kid’s wing on the west. Second floor terraces and sunscreens provide views and shade in this suburban setting. The playful mathematical grid of the house in the x, y and z axis also extends into the layout of the trees and hard-scapes, all centered on a suburban one-acre lot.
Many green attributes were designed into the home; Ipe wood sunscreens and window shades block out unwanted solar gain in summer, but allow winter sun in. Patio door and operable windows provide ample opportunity for natural ventilation throughout the open floor plan. Minimal windows on east and west sides to reduce heat loss in winter and unwanted gains in summer. Open floor plan and large window expanse reduces lighting demands and maximizes available daylight. Skylights provide natural light to the basement rooms. Durable, low-maintenance exterior materials include stone, ipe wood siding and decking, and concrete roof pavers. Perfect for golf enthusiast! Tech Tonic Consultants from Chicago designed this multi-screen golf and entertainment space that is completely automated. Simple to use, yet sophisticated under the hood, the homeowner presses one button to activated the Golf Simulator. Tech Tonic then designed the systems to integrate all of their audio and video sources to be played in a 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround environment. With an additional 64" screen at the ready waiting players may also watch their favorite sporting event or car show. Lights and climate are also integrated to simple control system.

To experiment with transparency and reflectivity, removing borders and edges from outside to inside the house, and to really depict “flowing and endless space”. To construct a house that is smart and efficient in terms of construction and energy, both in terms of the building and the user. To tell a story of how the house is built in terms of the constructability, structure and enclosure, with the nod to Japanese wood construction in the method in which the concrete beams support the steel beams; and in terms of how the entire house is enveloped in glass as if it was poured over the bones to make it skin tight. To engineer the house to be a smart house that not only looks modern, but acts modern; every aspect of user control is simplified to a digital touch button, whether lights, shades/blinds, HVAC, communication/audio/video, or security. To develop a planning module based on a 16 foot square room size and a 8 foot wide connector called an interstitial space for hallways, bathrooms, stairs and mechanical, which keeps the rooms pure and uncluttered. The base of the interstitial spaces also become skylights for the basement gallery.
This house is all about flexibility; the family room, was a nursery when the kids were infants, is a craft and media room now, and will be a family room when the time is right. Our rooms are all based on a 16’x16’ (4.8mx4.8m) module, so a bedroom, a kitchen, and a dining room are the same size and functions can easily change; only the furniture and the attitude needs to change.

So, what are the advantages of having a smart home?

Cameras, smart locks, motion detectors are a few of the ways you can dramatically increase security in your home. Do your homework and make sure cameras are encrypted and smart locks have deadbolts. Keep those bad guys away.

There was much more to this system. On the opposite side of the room there is a bar, where we installed a satellite Sonos Soundbar, wireless subwoofer and remote control system. A Key Digital HDMI 4K matrix switch and cables were used to connect all sources along with Key Digital HDMI over Cat5e 4K converters, Sonos Connect was installed to stream music from the system throughout the house, and high-end Panamax power protection and filters were included in the system as well. Finally, we added a Lutron RadioRA2 lighting control system, which along with all of the video and audio components were controllable via a Total Control MRX-10 Advanced Network Controller system with TRC-1080 universal remotes or by smartphone.

Quality Remodeling Specialists: Whole House Remodel
Adjacent to the kitchen, the first floor bath was completely gutted. It now displays a furniture-style vanity with vessel sink and a glass-enclosed tile shower. The master bath has a fully custom walk-in shower with nine showerheads, all digitally controlled. A double vanity and linen cabinets float on the opposite wall. Stacked stone on two of the walls is reminiscent of the materials used on the first floor, while 24” X 48” ceramic floor tile accentuate the room size. The balance of the master suite work included expanding the walk-in closet, a new fireplace and full home theater in the bedroom, and sliding barn-style doors in the entryway. The second floor main bath received a face-lift, with 20” ceramic floor tile, a granite vanity top, and new fixtures. Cherry cabinets with furniture legs and custom cherry tops, along with new lighting, update the dining room. The home now features fully automated lighting, blinds, and audio and video, controlled from the owner’s phones or the wall-mounted keypads.
