We demolished the Living Room, tearing out the original parquet floors throughout the apartment, which were at least 60 years old and had been sanded and refinished, God knows how many times? They were extremely thin. We then built a very narrow soffit , which is just the size of the Crown Molding which gave it a very slim profile to hold the low profile LED lights . Previously there were no lights accept two Halogen Torcheres, which threw off a lot of heat, especially in the summer months and illuminated the ceiling.. The ceiling light in the foyer was kept high up, so it wouldn't affect a tall person. The large bulb was just put there until a Dining Fixture could be found? This is a great shot of the new wood floors, which made the Living Room, brighter, lighter, definitely more spacious and up to date and timeless. It also gives a very clear view of the new right wall, that previously had some strange draws, down near the closet ,which originally were part of the right closet door. We cleaned up the whole wall, so client could put some sort of media unit, that previously would have looked ridiculous with the draws and ugly very obvious door, hiding the Utility Closet. We left the Utility Closet in place, and put her commercial looking metal file cabinet, where client kept important documents and we put in electrical outlets and built her a shelf for her printer and other stationary supplies. We then put on flush solid core doors without molding, invisible hinges and hidden door hardware, so it just blended into the wall and no longer stuck out like a sore thumb!

Our team worked with our client to recreate her former office into a post-retirement office/den oasis. She wanted a space where she could relax, use her computer, store additional items, and use as an additional guest room for visitors. We chose to completely remove the built-ins that took up the entire room and the crown molding to create a more modern look. Then, we painted the walls, striped the floors and added a wood-mimicking vinyl, and brought in a beautiful area rug to tie it all together . Our team also gutted the closet and its doors. We were able to take the new doors all the way to the top for additional storage, and create section within the closet so only the part that needs to be used is open. We created a section for storage, for our client's uniforms, and office equipment such as a printer, scanner and various documents.

The Net Zero Barn is one half of a larger project (see “Farm House Renovation”). When the new owners acquired the property, their hope had been to renovate the existing barn as part of the living space; the evaluation of the structural integrity of the barn timbers revealed that it was not structurally stable, so the barn was dismantled, the timber salvaged, documented, and repaired, and redeployed in the “Farm House Renovation”. The owners still wanted a barn, so CTA sourced an antique barn frame of a similar size and style in western Ontario, and worked with a timber specialist to import, restore, and erect the frame on the property. The new/old barn now houses a sleeping loft with bathroom over a tv area and overlooking a large pool table and bar, sitting, and dining area, all illuminated by a large monitor and triple paned windows. A lean-to garage structure is modelled on the design of the barn that was removed. Solar panels on the roof, super insulated panels and the triple glazed windows all contribute to the Barn being a Net Zero energy project. The project was featured in Boston Magazine’s December 2017 Issue and was the 2020 Recipient of an Award Citation by the Boston Society of Architects. No strangers to remodeling, the new owners of this St. Paul tudor knew they could update this decrepit 1920 duplex into a single-family forever home. A list of desired amenities was a catalyst for turning a bedroom into a large mudroom, an open kitchen space where their large family can gather, an additional exterior door for direct access to a patio, two home offices, an additional laundry room central to bedrooms, and a large master bathroom. As for the aesthetic, this was inspired by a deep appreciation for the durability, colors, textures and simplicity of Norwegian design. The home’s light paint colors set a positive tone. An abundance of tile creates character. New lighting reflecting the home’s original design is mixed with simplistic modern lighting. To pay homage to the original character several light fixtures were reused, wallpaper was repurposed at a ceiling, the chimney was exposed, and a new coffered ceiling was created.
