The Net Zero Barn is one half of a larger project (see “Farm House Renovation”). When the new owners acquired the property, their hope had been to renovate the existing barn as part of the living space; the evaluation of the structural integrity of the barn timbers revealed that it was not structurally stable, so the barn was dismantled, the timber salvaged, documented, and repaired, and redeployed in the “Farm House Renovation”. The owners still wanted a barn, so CTA sourced an antique barn frame of a similar size and style in western Ontario, and worked with a timber specialist to import, restore, and erect the frame on the property. The new/old barn now houses a sleeping loft with bathroom over a tv area and overlooking a large pool table and bar, sitting, and dining area, all illuminated by a large monitor and triple paned windows. A lean-to garage structure is modelled on the design of the barn that was removed. Solar panels on the roof, super insulated panels and the triple glazed windows all contribute to the Barn being a Net Zero energy project. The project was featured in Boston Magazine’s December 2017 Issue and was the 2020 Recipient of an Award Citation by the Boston Society of Architects. No strangers to remodeling, the new owners of this St. Paul tudor knew they could update this decrepit 1920 duplex into a single-family forever home. A list of desired amenities was a catalyst for turning a bedroom into a large mudroom, an open kitchen space where their large family can gather, an additional exterior door for direct access to a patio, two home offices, an additional laundry room central to bedrooms, and a large master bathroom. To best understand the complexity of the floor plan changes, see the construction documents. As for the aesthetic, this was inspired by a deep appreciation for the durability, colors, textures and simplicity of Norwegian design. The home’s light paint colors set a positive tone. An abundance of tile creates character. New lighting reflecting the home’s original design is mixed with simplistic modern lighting. To pay homage to the original character several light fixtures were reused, wallpaper was repurposed at a ceiling, the chimney was exposed, and a new coffered ceiling was created. This lakeside home is in a beautiful location, but the original design was dated, and not functional. The Clients requested a major end-to-end renovation involving adding a 3rd floor loft, expanding the home’s footprint, and redesigning every room. Every home has a story. This home is located in the heart of Hickory, NC. The homeowner initially filed an insurance claim but was denied. They called us to see if there was anything we could do, upon coming out and doing a thorough inspection of the roof. We documented our findings which led to their claim being overturned and their insurance provider covering the cost of their brand new roof. We are professional roofers and we are good at what we do. At the beginning of the design process, the homeowners requested a simple and elegant home. They had collected wonderful and exquisite items from their travels around the world, and wanted a simple backdrop to showcase them. The pallet of cream, brown and white was combined with elegant arched doorways, large windows and sculptural light fixtures for a timeless home. Detailed construction documents were vital in communicating their needs and design changes along the way so that the final product reflected their vision. Original Conditions: This typical 1970’s choppy split-level house was e “functionally obsolete,” had three bedrooms, two baths, and no real master suite before we got our hands on it. The Result: Because of our design plans and visualizations, our clients were able to create a stunning property that was functionally current, appealed to the correct demographic, and wowed potential buyers resulting in the home selling before it ever hit the market!
