Given his background as a commercial bakery owner, the homeowner desired the space to have all of the function of commercial grade kitchens, but the warmth of an eat in domestic kitchen. Exposed commercial shelving functions as cabinet space for dish and kitchen tool storage. We met the challenge of creating an industrial space, by not doing conventional cabinetry, and adding an armoire for food storage. The original plain stainless sink unit, got a warm wood slab that will function as a breakfast bar. Large scale porcelain bronze tile, that met the functional and aesthetic desire for a concrete floor.

Hammer & Hand and architect Kevin Fischer (of Alice Design) and Charlotte Cooney (of Domestic Arts) transformed an exposed and underutilized yard area into a space for entertaining, relaxing, and guest quarters. The team turned an underused detached garage into a stylish and comfortable 480 SF accessory dwelling unit with it’s own patio area. Inspiration for a large transitional open concept dark wood floor living room remodel in Los Angeles with beige walls, no fireplace and no tv

The Deschutes House is located on an urban site facing the Deschutes River in Bend, Oregon. The architectural massing of the house has been wrapped around a south-facing, grassy courtyard, with dramatic 2nd story spaces cantilevered toward the river. The main living space is completely transparent to the river on one side and to the courtyard on the other side, providing two entirely different views from the room. The living ceiling plane has enlivened by CNC-milled wood-strip ceiling panels, with variegated shapes inspired by landscape morphology. The house is clad with a two different types of siding: tightly spaced Western red cedar and corrugated metal siding. The warm tones of the wood contrast nicely with the cool tones of the metal siding and metal roofing. The fireplace chimney is clad in Montana ledgestone with a combination of earth tones and grey-blue colors. The house has a number of sustainable or “green” building features, including 2x8 construction (40% greater insulation value); generous glass areas to provide natural lighting and ventilation; large overhangs for sun and snow protection; metal siding for maximum durability; and radiant floor heating. The house also has solar hot water panels for domestic hot water.

The kitchen is decorated in an unusual medieval style, the main element of which is the beige walls. The room does not seem cramped despite the large amount of multifunctional furniture and contemporary household appliances. The prevailing colors are beige and grey. The calm colors create an atmosphere of tranquility, warmth, and comfort. Thanks to a few different kinds of lighting, the owners can easily work and relax in the kitchen. Hammer & Hand, along with architect Mary Hogue from MKM Architecture and designer Charlotte Cooney of Domestic Arts, transformed a boxy, closed off space into an open and flowing floor plan. H&H caged out the openings from the entryway into the living room, from the living room to the dining room, and from the dining room into the kitchen to turn four compartmentalized spaces into one flowing area. The team also did a complete remodel of the kitchen, creating an open space perfect for cooking and socializing. Nooks with floating shelves help organize the kitchen while keeping bar items and spices visible and accessible. A solid copper range hood from Vent-A-Hood and striped Marmoleum floor add interest to the otherwise neutral space. The original kitchen was walled in for a galley layout. The waterfall Island replaced where the walls were. The custom dining table adds to the continuity of the space. The client did a great job finding the right chairs and stools! The table and all the cabinets are built by True To Form Design with domestic cabinet grade hardwoods and premium hardware.

Secret Gardens is regularly presented with new and challenging designs. This warehouse renovation required a complete overhaul of the internal warehouse courtyard and front entrance. Previous renovations had ‘domesticated’ the building, a poor departure from its warehouse origins. The front was given a sophisticated finish with balconies added onto bedrooms and large garage and entrance doors created with a bronze/copper finish. The internal courtyard pool was modernised, BBQ and cabinetry added and the finishing touches of plants added in pots and hanging from the beams to bring greenery to this industrial space. The end result has enhanced the warehouse appeal with a modern touch.
