At the height of summer, this balcony garden yields tomatoes ranging in size and shape from tiny marble-sized, to cherry sized, to yellow pear, to cocktail and finally to slicing tomatoes. Next to it are the herbs and edible flowers that are good companions for tomatoes.

Nasturtium are another edible flower, as long as they are grown organically from untreated seeds. They add another peppery kick to salads, and are relatively resistant to wind, making them ideal for balcony gardens. For added versatility, they are available both in climbing and trailing varieties, softening the lines of containers.
