This project remodeled the entire existing two story house and added a third level, capturing the incredible views toward downtown. The design features integral color stucco, zinc roofing, an International Orange staircase, eco-teak cabinets and concrete counters. A flowing sequence of spaces were choreographed from the entry through to the family room.

Mattern and Associates CONTRACTORS: Urban Design Build Studio PHOTOGRAPHER: Urban Design Build Studio DESCRIPTION: Project RE_ is a collaborative education, job training, research, and pre-fabrication facility with a mission to reuse materials, rebuild communities, and restore lives, located in an existing warehouse currently home to several other non-profits focused on waste reduction. The building was designed for deconstruction and incorporates examples of material reuse, with each building element being a marketable product or strategy built by the partner organizations who use the space. JURY COMMENTS: The jury was unclear as to how a building inside of another structure should be understood, but found many praiseworthy aspects including the attention to details, participation in the construction, and ability to disassemble and reassemble.

Our homeowners, a retired occupational therapist and her husband a UW horticulturalist, were planning to age in place (AIP) and engaged our design + build team to help them create the master suite they’d envisioned. This project was done with a team of Certified Aging in Place Specialists (CAPS) and Certified Living in Place Professionals (CLIPP). Many universal standards were implemented into the project with the help of this highly educated team, including the lead carpenter/project manager, project developer, and designer.

This Project consisted of a Pondless Waterfall Memorial installation in Hummlestown, PA at the Allegheny Valley School. The Pondless Waterfall has dueling streams measuring approximately 25′ in length disappearing into a 400 gallon pondless underground basin. We installed LED lighting in the water feature and under water falls for night time viewing. This Pondless waterfall was built as a memorial to Jilly a resident at the school who passed away. The Allegheny Valley School provides residential, therapeutic, educational, vocational and social programs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They provide care to people from childhood through adulthood. An individualized plan of care is designed for each person with the goal of achieving the highest level of independence while enhancing his/her quality of life.

As much as the drought is effecting Austin, I still love a little turf grass. This is palisades zoysia grass which is very drought tolerant. Native plant on a good drip irrigation system really saves water.
