TIMELESS AWARD PROJECT: The Board of Public Education CLIENT: Pittsburgh Public School System ARCHITECTURE FIRM: Ingham and Boyd, Predecessor to IKM Incorporated PHOTOGRAPHER: IKM Incorporated DESCRIPTION: Like much of the neighboring architecture that resides in the Schenley Farms National Register Historic District, the Pittsburgh Board of Public Education Building was designed in the Beaux Arts style, completed in 1938. The building is an example of Italian High Renaissance palace architecture including four stories, widely spaced fenestration on the exterior elevations, and a well-lit interior courtyard. JURY COMMENTS: This is a wonderful example of the City Beautiful movement, which characterizes the Oakland neighborhood. It is a handsome civic building that is nicely scaled. It is very unusual in this day and age to see a building still used for its original purpose. What is there not to like?

DESCRIPTION: The Orientation Center houses an admission/ticketing area, museum shop, and education and orientation galleries, integrating technology to provide interaction with the museum’s collections and programs. Designed as a campus focal point, the Center was conceived as a garden pavilion, with high-transparency glass offering uninterrupted views to orient visitors to their surroundings. JURY COMMENTS: This pavilion is truly a welcome center with beautiful materials, spaces, and detailing. The building presents as an object surrounded by glass allowing the user to see the campus while gathering information.

Our homeowners, a retired occupational therapist and her husband a UW horticulturalist, were planning to age in place (AIP) and engaged our design + build team to help them create the master suite they’d envisioned. This project was done with a team of Certified Aging in Place Specialists (CAPS) and Certified Living in Place Professionals (CLIPP). Many universal standards were implemented into the project with the help of this highly educated team, including the lead carpenter/project manager, project developer, and designer.

This home is in Noe Valley, a highly desirable and growing neighborhood of San Francisco. As young highly-educated families move into the area, we are remodeling and adding on to the aging homes found there. This project remodeled the entire existing two story house and added a third level, capturing the incredible views toward downtown. The design features integral color stucco, zinc roofing, an International Orange staircase, eco-teak cabinets and concrete counters. A flowing sequence of spaces were choreographed from the entry through to the family room.
