Designed by twentieth-century landscape architect A.E. Bye, the Pittman Residence in Falls Village, Connecticut features an artistic landscape design both inspired by and accentuating the area’s natural ecological character. Embodying the architect’s own creative aesthetic, the property incorporates various undulating landforms that draw on the presence of natural shadows to create a memorable landscape that lingers in the minds of visitors long after they bid the property ado. This season, join landscape architect and scholar Kimberly Mercurio as she leads an engaging dialogue on the design history of the Pittman Residence and the significance of Bye’s play on shadows in landscape architecture. With her immense knowledge of A.E. Bye’s work, having recently completed the A.E. Bye/Landscape Architecture Archives Research Fellowship at Penn State University and received a grant from Dumbarton Oaks to further study and document his achievements, Mercurio’s presentation promises to be both educational and inspiring. A flowing sequence of spaces were choreographed from the entry through to the family room.

Castle Building & RemodelingThe goal of the homeowner was to modernize and make the existing kitchen more functional by adding storage, countertop work space, and better task lighting. Castle was able to design an updated kitchen that refaced and painted half of the cabinets and added new deeper cabinets in an L shape that helped meet the clients goals. White painted shaker style doors and slab drawers help compliment the locally made recycled glass countertops and white oak hardwood floors. Thanks to ample LED cabinet lighting the most noticeable feature of this updated kitchen is the local hand-made mid-century backsplash tile from Mercury Mosaics. A new ThermaTru fiberglass backdoor was also installed. Stainless steel LG appliances from Warner’s Stellian and classic chrome accessories and fixtures give the perfect finishing touches.

Background: Pamela has been in the Home Fashions Industry since 1986, beginning with (now known as) Federated Department Stores, working her way through the retail industry. She brings her experience in the field, along with educational training to the design firm she started in 2001. If asked, she might share that she designed her first home at age eight!
Involvement: Pamela stays active in the design community to bring her clients the best options for their projects. She has served as the Chapter President of The Interior Design Society, both in Portland, Oregon and currently in Los Angeles, California. She has donated and participated in several charitable organizations including The Annie Ross House, Women of Vision, Susan G. Komen Foundation and Rotary of Portland.
Speaking: Pamela taught fun and informative Interior Design classes at Portland Community College for eight years where she shared her love of design with enthusiastic home owners. She has presented Lunch & Learn workshops for Intel Corporation and was a featured speaker at the Northwest Women’s Show, several area Women’s church groups, Portland’s Festival of Trees and the Portland Home & Garden Show.
