Plants were carefully selected to help enforce the idea of form that contrast the hardscapes in color, but embrace the sculptural looks of the garden. The upper deck of the garden consist of three elements: Fire pit, pool with raised Jacuzzi and a granite counter. Palm trees surround the fire pit seating area which calms the mood of users as the witness the fire and palm feathers sway. The pool is designed with a raised Jacuzzi which spills out into the pool creating a beautiful water feature. Citrus trees circles the counter area which provides a sweet smell making users hungry for something delicious.

The aesthetic for this home is organic modernism. It combines natural materials and colors with modern elements for an airy and sophisticated look. The furniture consists of clean lines, rounded shapes and smooth surfaces that are accentuated with a variety of leathers, metals, and neutral linens to introduce texture and an organic feel. To give the home just a splash of color we used the warmth from cognac leathers and deep soft blues throughout the accessories. Overall, the contrast between modern and organic creates the perfect balance between clean and comfortable that will appeal to any future homeowner.

The remarkable Greek inspired indoor pool facility has a blend of contemporary rectilinear components with Greek-Roman architectural elements and finishes, such as the over-extending, ancient-style aqueduct that transitions from the spa into the pool, and the hand carved fire-water features at each end of the room. The aqueduct is a key relevance to the style which portrays an ancient cultural method of elutriating stagnant bath water with a continuous supply of fresh water. Each elaborately hand carved feature sets a mood of Greek architectural expression in this space. The two fire-water features at each end of the pool and all of the column structural support depict a ‘Doric’ style consisting of channeled columns. Also, to enhance this space with a full perspective of Greek-Roman style, the convex ceiling depicts a vision of an opened-ceiling that reveals a fully animated Greek-mythological star setting created by fiber optic lighting. Geothermal technology is the primary source for heating and cooling the pool and spa. Although the square footage of this house is not that big it feels very spacious due to the open floor plan and high angled ceilings. The laminate floors were kept consistent throughout the house to add that element of unity. The Peruvian dining table and chairs were found at a consignment store.

Designed by award winning architect Clint Miller, this North Scottsdale property has been featured in Phoenix Home and Garden's 30th Anniversary edition (January 2010). The home was chosen for its authenticity to the Arizona Desert. Built in 2005 the property is an example of territorial architecture featuring a central courtyard as well as two additional garden courtyards. Clint's loyalty to adobe's structure is seen in his use of arches throughout. The chimneys and parapets add interesting vertical elements to the buildings. The parapets were capped using Chocolate Flagstone from Northern Arizona and the scuppers were crafted of copper to stay consistent with the home's Arizona heritage.

2015 Photo Contest 3rd Place Winner. $100 gift card goes to Deck Envy. Per Chet Leudtke of Deck Envy, this project is on the west shore of Lake Tahoe. While only one deck is seen here, there are multiple levels of decks, and the goal was to not compromise the incredible views. The railing framework consists of 6x6 posts and 3x6 top cap. 1/8” cable infill was secured to the posts with Adjust-a-Bodies with Hanger Bolts at both ends of each run.

Integrated Lighting Design: A series of recessed LED pot lights are strategically placed to illuminate both levels, ensuring the stairwell and upper landing feel bright and welcoming at all times. Clean Geometry: The sharp white bulkheads and neutral wall tones provide a "blank canvas" that allows the architectural metalwork and organic wood textures to stand out as primary design features. After seeing this roof design the clients dubbed their new house “Garuda” after the Hindu Demi-God with wings so large they darkened the sky, and the name stuck. These clients were a couple who were wanting a house for them and their dogs that could also house each of their parents who came often to visit them from India for prolonged stays. They wanted to have plenty of common space for everyone to spend time together as well as a sense of privacy between each of the three bedroom suites. The resulting design consists of two lower “plinths”, each one housing one of the parent’s ensuite bedrooms which open onto private exterior patios in the rear yard. The upper level that bridges over and cantilevers beyond the lower plinths contains the communal living spaces and the couple’s bedroom suite, while the tops of the lower plinths then become roof decks for the spaces above. The void between the lower plinths serves as the primary entrance, and this space opens into a double height space with skylights that draw you up and make you feel connected to the upper living spaces despite the level change. Other unique spaces and elements were integrated into the design at the client’s request such as a Puja (prayer) room that opened into a screened exterior landscape area with a small fountain, as well as a rock climbing wall in the interior entrance atrium. The garage was tucked below and accessed from the side to keep the doors largely out of view, and a large movie room was also integrated on the lowest level. The clients requested natural and warm materials, which lead to exposing the concrete floors throughout the interior and the use of corten rusting steel panels on the exterior of the lower plinths and wood soffits at the roof and underside of the upper floor.

Working in collaboration with Architect Amy A. Alper who designed this modern farmhouse, the interiors were an extension of the overall design concept. Inspired by the architecture of Sir Edwin Lutyens, the concept for this home was to develop details more consistent with this romantic style and integrate the architecture with the English garden landscape of the property. The home had a series of incongruous additions in a variety of architecture styles, detail and proportions. The exterior of the home was renovated in improve the proportions and roof line and to add depth to the facade. The deep overhangs, bracket elements, half-timbering with brick infill and dovecote detailing create interesting light and shadow contrast on the facades. The design also included a completely renovated kitchen, family room, and mudroom. The garage was re-skinned with details that match the home and give a more refined appearance. The architectural improvements were coordinated closely with interior and landscape design to bring the English Arts and Crafts detailing throughout the entire property and offer views into the garden spaces The landscaping on the property was re-imagined in an English garden theme, including a parterre lawn, stone retaining walls and new front access to develop a foreground and better street presence.
