The couple requested that an alcove be converted into a homework space for their two children. They hoped for 2 separate desks plus storage space. The space is 5’-6” x 8’-6”. The long wall has a large bank of windows and a 12” x 12” electrical chase running along the floor under the windows. The children are aged 4 and 7 right now, and the space needs to accommodate them as they grow. The space could not accommodate two back-to-back desks with sufficient circulation space. Thus, the corner space was leveraged for both desks and storage. The custom designed desks provide plenty of layout space and elbow room for the student along the front edge. The deep corners are fitted with custom wall units for storage. More storage is found above, below and between the desks. The desk and deep corner storage units are designed to accommodate the children’s growth. The desks have a second set of legs to raise them to standard adult height. The corner units have an open storage space at the bottom that becomes hidden under the desk top when the desk top is raised in the coming years. The design provides a finished look now, when only one desk top is raised, and when both desks are eventually raised. The design also encourages concentration. The desks face away from each other. Cabinet placement ensures that chairs won’t bump into one another when pushing away from the desk. This thoughtful husband wanted to give his wife an Asian-inspired shade garden with deep cedar soaking tub for her 50th birthday - what a guy! They also wanted to encourage their teenagers and friends to hang out at home - smart thinking! The hot tub and deck had to be designed around large existing conifers. The addition of the overhead structure provides visual interest as well as protecting the hot tub from sap and falling debris. This project illustrates skilled woodworking and a minimalist, textural plant palette. We created two separate patios - one for outdoor dining and one with a gas fire table, perfect for enticing teenagers and their friends! Lighting from FX Luminaire highlights the Japanese Maple and illuminates the stamped concrete pathways, creating a magical nighttime effect.

This designer’s ideal is homeowners with a clear vision, set priorities, and values that align seamlessly with ours. These clients, an accomplished artist and the owner of a generational hops growing farm, were collaborative and trusting from the start. They conscientiously selected a team of Architect (Green Hammer), General Contractor (Cellar Ridge) and ATIID for furnishings and finishing touches. Each firm was able to meticulously manage their leg of the project, while collaborating wholistically with each other and the homeowners. The family farmhouse, lovingly named “Westwood,” was showing the wear one expects after serving a growing family for decades. The owner’s dream was to revive, open up, and breathe modern life into each space, while respecting the home’s heritage. One of our first collaborations was the light fixture that would grace the main two-story entry hall. HiiH Lights in Astoria, Oregon, was commissioned to bring “the function of light, the craft of paper, and the art of sculpture” to the home. Visiting the maker’s space – a massive barn on his coastal property – was such an inspiring adventure! Original work by the resident artist sets an ethereal tone in the space, and an antique bench handsomely blends the old with the new. A wall that divided the home’s living room and kitchen was removed, and the breezy and bright gathering room was born. Light walls, warm wood tones, cozy upholstery, clean lines and heritage elements create a welcoming atmosphere and invite lounging and conversation. The sun-drenched nook is the home’s main indoor dining area, with an extension table and sculpted chairs that are just right for family gatherings or morning rituals with the Sunday paper. The kitchen is a chef’s dream with every modern amenity, but its casual attitude is “let’s make a mess and eat!” The owner’s artwork graces the mantel over the new fireplace that was carved from a tree felled on the property, illustrating the thoughtful consideration of each element. The muted wool area rugs in the entryways and great room are hard-wearing for farm life, and the furniture’s classic lines, bold contrasting colors, deep seating and soft textures encourage cozy conversations or large group gatherings. The library is undoubtedly our favorite space in this home. Tucked in “speakeasy style” behind a hidden (wallpapered!) door in the moody wet bar, and drenched in deep green, the room offers a quiet retreat that hugs you in an embrace of books and family photos. The cozy settee nestled between the bookcases sits opposite a custom pair of modern cognac leather wing chairs. The area rug continues the storied look without the antique price tag with a piece from Loloi’s “Heritage Collection.” A little va-va-voom was requested for the powder bath and boy did we deliver! Custom wallpaper plays over original wainscotting and ceilings wrapped in more glorious green. The space evokes joy every time you open the door! A primary suite that would “transport us to another world” and be “classic yet modern, peaceful, collected and uncluttered” was a tall order. Our new furniture layout takes full advantage of the view of wine country hills and the Willamette River, welcomes fireside lounging, and serves as a calm respite for the lovely owners. Westwood Farmhouse truly was inspired by family, genuine love for home and graciousness for all who enter. The Greenmeadow bedrooms, designed by Kaylee Pauley Interiors, offers a harmonious blend of serenity and timeless elegance. Each bedroom is thoughtfully crafted to serve as a tranquil retreat, featuring a soothing color palette of deep greens, creamy whites, and soft blues. Natural wood accents, such as rich-toned bedside tables and bed frames, add warmth and character to the spaces. The design seamlessly combines classic elements, like vintage-inspired furniture, with modern simplicity, ensuring a cohesive and stylish aesthetic. Soft, layered textiles—including plush bedding, cozy throws, and tactile pillows—enhance comfort and invite relaxation. Carefully curated decor, including subtle patterned throw pillows, curated artwork, and potted plants, adds personality without overwhelming the design. Practical features, such as furniture with ample storage and thoughtful layouts, ensure functionality for everyday living. These bedrooms are designed to be peaceful havens that encourage restful nights, quiet retreats, and creative moments for all ages.

Embarking on the design journey of Wabi Sabi Refuge, I immersed myself in the profound quest for tranquility and harmony. This project became a testament to the pursuit of a tranquil haven that stirs a deep sense of calm within. Guided by the essence of wabi-sabi, my intention was to curate Wabi Sabi Refuge as a sacred space that nurtures an ethereal atmosphere, summoning a sincere connection with the surrounding world. Deliberate choices of muted hues and minimalist elements foster an environment of uncluttered serenity, encouraging introspection and contemplation. Embracing the innate imperfections and distinctive qualities of the carefully selected materials and objects added an exquisite touch of organic allure, instilling an authentic reverence for the beauty inherent in nature's creations. Wabi Sabi Refuge serves as a sanctuary, an evocative invitation for visitors to embrace the sublime simplicity, find solace in the imperfect, and uncover the profound and tranquil beauty that wabi-sabi unveils.

As exciting as having a completely new building built specifically to your requirements is, it can be hard to envisage how it will really look and feel until it is built. It was at this point that my clients found themselves confronted with a completely blank canvas, which can be a very daunting prospect. My Clients had lots of amazing ideas, but it is hard to know where to begin. I thoroughly enjoyed working with them to put their ideas on paper and create a plan that expressed their (exceptional!) taste and personality, whilst encouraging flow and functionality through the property. The lounge area is a practical and clean area with oodles of comfort to boot! The large, deep seated sofas contrast beautifully with the colours of the armchairs, to make an ecclectic mix of seating that is very pleasing to the eye, set off with the scatter cushions, which bring the scheme together effectively, adding even more comfort. The whole room is a mixture of dark vs light, creating a dramatic, yet cozy, light and spacious space to relax or socialise. The bespoke black framed, sliding glazed frame internal door works perfectly to shut the space of for privacy and sound exclusion, without loosing light to the room. Wide exterior bi-folding doors offer the option of opening the space out to the garden, giving complete connectivite between the two. The ochre yellow, dark forest green, hints of turquoise and oxford blue, team together so well and are set off beautifully by the contrasting natural white walls and the deep blue accent wall, along with the contrasting textures of the tweed curtains, velvet sofas, soft limestone flagstone flooring and high pile rug. A very successful scheme which my clients absolutely adore!
