I WISH I had before pictures of this project. The home was built in 2001. And after living 20+ years with a builder's grade kitchen, the lovely couple was eager to revamp. This time around, we brought the wall cabinets to the ceiling (which always give the illusion of taller ceilings, not to mention the additional storage); And topped the wall cabinets with a beautiful molding detail. An added island, in a dark gray stain added visual interest and weight to this white shaker kitchen. ?Designer Tip- Want an island with seating? A dark, stain is a great finish choice. For ☝️, a stain is more durable than a paint. And ✌️, the darker finish will hide scuff marks and wear and tear the island may endure from company and littles.

When our Alexandria clients moved into their first home, they inherited a kitchen with outdated laminate countertops and dark cabinetry that made the space feel closed in. They wanted the opposite: bright, open, and built for how they actually live. We started with white Shaker cabinetry to maximize natural light in a kitchen that sits at the center of the home's main floor, visible from nearly every living space. A soft off-white quartz countertop added warmth without losing that airy, light-filled quality, and gold hardware and fixtures carried through consistently on every cabinet pull, knob, and faucet, giving the space a cohesive, elegant finish rather than a mismatched one. The final touch came from a pair of black trumpet pendant lights above the island. In a kitchen built almost entirely on light, warm tones, that black accent gave the room the contrast and visual anchor it needed to feel complete rather than simply pretty. White, black, and gold is one of the most enduring kitchen palettes we work with at Grace House Studio. A homeowner who we’d worked with previously (a bathroom we’d remodeled for him was named ‘Bathroom of the Year’ by Boston Globe Magazine in 2007.) contacted us with a new project in mind. Following a divorce and second marriage, he and his family had moved into mid-sized home that felt too cramped for two adults and four children. Working within its existing frame, we set to work creating a more functional and pleasant living experience. The family’s main gathering area is the kitchen. We began improving the space by absorbing square footage from what had been a mudroom/laundry area behind the kitchen. This allowed us to introduce an island, creating a focal point for meal prep, cooking, and socializing. New custom cabinetry increased storage. We added a homework nook for the kids. Wider openings to the foyer and the dining room made flow between spaces easier. At the home’s entry, we re-treaded and re-finished the staircase, adding new railings and newell post. An orange fiberglass exterior door contrasts playfully with the home’s deep blue exterior. Finishing the basement allowed the introduction of a new laundry area, a cozy family room/kids play space, and a workshop. In this last space we reconfigured some kitchen items that had been ordered but were unusable due to a last-minute change in plans, including a cabinet now used for tool storage and a wall panel that became a workbench. On the home’s second floor, one bedroom had been accessible only by passing through another bedroom. The family’s two teenage children had been enduring this arrangement via solutions that included placing duct tape along the floor to mark passage boundaries. We were able to give each child much-desired private space by borrowing square-footage from a closet and carving out a hallway with separate entries for each room. In order to make a hall bathroom stand out you need to work with homeowners with a vision. Mike and Katie had that vision – and our design team shined! We started with a classic black and white mosaic tile floor, brass fixtures and a stunning vanity. We created a custom linen closet with roll out shelves, added vintage wainscoting and topped the space off with Rifle Paper wallpaper. This bathroom is truly a stand out and will endure for years to come.

Endless Movement presents a vertical column of intertwined red human forms compressed between two tall white structures. The rigid white sides create a narrow channel, framing the figures as they twist, climb, and fold into one another. Individual bodies are visible, yet they merge into a continuous flow, forming a single upward motion. The vivid red color contrasts sharply with the calm, architectural white surfaces, emphasizing the energy and tension within the confined space. The figures appear caught in an ongoing cycle—struggling, rising, and transforming—without a clear beginning or end. This vertical movement suggests persistence and the constant effort of human existence. Despite limitation and pressure from the surrounding structure, the bodies continue to shift and ascend. The sculpture reflects the idea that life is a continuous process of movement, adaptation, and endurance, where individual actions blend into an unending collective rhythm.
