The HingeHouse project was the result of a unique partnership between an independent architect and a pre-fabricated home manufacturer – a partnership among the first of its kind in the country. Today, many pre-fab companies have adopted this collaborative approach recognizing that homeowners are looking for unique, custom homes while taking advantage of reliable and predictable construction methods and costs.
In 2008, the partnership was created to rethink pre-engineered post-and-beam and panelized systems to connect clients to a more modern and integrated set of design values. By integrating systems, factory design approach, manufacturing methodologies and construction sequences with design criteria grounded in sustainable planning and rigorous implementation, HingeHouse was developed.
HingeHouse is a fully-customizable pre-fab home which can be configured to meet the needs of any site, and any family. It is flexible and expandable using Deck House engineered building components. Starting with basic floor plans that are optimized spatially to Deck’s standard components, the living spaces are rotated around a "hinge” point. This design solution addresses the limitations and challenges of a particular site, while highlighting the best aspects of it. HingeHouse considers passive solar orientation depending on where the home is placed on the site and how it is “hinged”. It provides for maximum cross-ventilation from prevailing winds, preserves existing site formations and trees, and works on sloping grades. It addresses specific desired views while mitigating unwanted adjacencies, and provides great flexibility for entry sequences.
HingeHouse uses Deck’s standard sloped roof post-and-beam component system to create a lyrical, light-filled home. The western red cedar exterior is sculptural and dynamic. Interior spaces are lofty, with great view potential using Deck’s own custom-made mahogany windows. The “hinge” of the home, where the two building forms come together, has the added benefit of creating a desirable outdoor living room, complete with an outdoor fireplace. The "hinge” provides both a tool for maximizing customization and spatial orientation and a center of activity at the heart of the home.
Since this partnership in 2008, Maryann Thompson Architects and MATHISON | MATHISON ARCHITECTS have worked with Acorn Deck House Company on numerous full or partial pre-fab projects in the Boston Area, Western Massachusetts, Maryland and Michigan. We have become an advocate for their services and products because it offers advantages on a variety of levels including schedule, cost and quality.
Services provided included visioning, programming, concept design, schematic design, construction documentation and construction administration.

Rodwin Architecture and Skycastle Homes
Location: Boulder, Colorado, United States
We helped the clients find a beautiful lot in North Boulder, then crafted this modern 3,300 s.f. house to be their dream home.
The clients asked for a warm modern style home, with an open floor plan that connected to the outdoors and took full advantage of the rare lot. We sited and engineered the house for optimal passive solar design, while simultaneously capturing unobstructed panoramic views of the Flatirons from both levels. The home’s simple, clean lines reflect their unpretentious, easy-going character. The gourmet kitchen, dining and Great room are flooded with sunshine from the 9ft high ceilings and walls of glass. A gracious covered west porch flows seamlessly out from the Great room through a giant bank of sliding doors, creating a fantastic opportunity for indoor/outdoor living. The porch has solid cedar columns and Beetle-kill wood on the ceiling to create a warm feeling.
On the ground floor, walk past the front hall to reach a guest suite and a rec room that is divided between a small media room for the boys and a north facing painting studio.
Follow the stair to the second floor where you’ll immediately be presented with a stunning view from the open study and balcony. All the bedrooms get a south facing Flatiron view and the master has its own private balcony.
The owners wanted the HERS 37 house to be as green as possible, and the house has tiny energy and water bills as well as a healthy indoor air environment. It features solar photovoltaic panels, Energy Star fiberglass windows, foam insulation, LED lights, Watersense plumbing fixtures, a 96% efficient furnace & zero-VOC finishes.

Utilizing high-performance Solarban 70 argon gas-filled insulated glass, the Sunspace team achieved exceptional thermal performance and optimal light transmission to provide a comfortable and luminous environment. We further enhanced the home’s existing Velux skylights with custom copper cladding to ensure a cohesive aesthetic. The copper exterior adds a touch of timeless elegance while the insulated glass secures year-round comfort.
As always, we believe in the value of collaboration. This project demonstrates that value. Project Description
Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Precision Home Installation
This project features the professional installation of the next-generation Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 system. Known for their upgraded brightness and enhanced color rendering, these lights require a precise, calculated layout—especially since the manufacturer guidelines restrict cutting into the main line, presenting a unique installation challenge.
Key Features of This Installation:
Next-Gen Exterior Illumination: Outfitted with the newly released Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2, delivering brilliant architectural down-lighting, incredible holiday presets, and daily accent lighting.
Creative Technical Problem Solving: Because these specialized strands could not be cut without voiding the integrity of the system, we meticulously engineered the run layout. To achieve a perfectly flush finish at the roofline edge, we successfully executed a custom shortening and capping technique on the final strands.
Flawless Eave Integration: The lights were mounted at the optimal distance from the fascia to ensure a perfectly uniform, triangular cone wash down the home's exterior walls, eliminating hot spots and dark gaps.
Smart Ecosystem Control: Fully integrated into the homeowner's smart ecosystem, allowing for voice control, scheduled automation, and endless customization through the native app interface.
Our Specialized Lighting Expertise
Smart lighting systems require more than just hanging a strand—they require precision planning. We specialize in handling high-end retail and commercial systems, providing:
Advanced Layout Mapping: Ensuring your runs look symmetrical and perfectly tailored to your roofline before a single clip is mounted.
Out-of-the-Box Troubleshooting: Finding safe, manufacturer-approved technical workarounds for complex roof lines where standard plug-and-play methods fall short.
Clean Wire Management: Tucking and hiding all jump wires and power supplies for a seamless daytime appearance.

We understand that a skylight is more than just a source of light. Each unit is an opportunity to create a transformative, space-redefining portal to the skies above. Whether you’re a homeowner looking for a sun-drenched interior or a professional aiming to integrate innovative glass solutions into your projects, we’re here to help.

In the heart of Concord, Massachusetts, a vision for a brighter, more expansive kitchen and dining area has been realized thanks to the collaborative expertise of Sunspace Design and fellow local professionals. Our home-owning clients sought to infuse their living space with natural light. Sunspace Design—renowned for crafting exquisite custom skylights and glass structures—delivered a stunning solution. This project showcases our ability to seamlessly integrate bespoke glass construction into any project.
The centerpiece of this transformation is a meticulously crafted 10’ x 17’ double-hip skylight framed in rich mahogany and clad in elegant cold rolled copper. The skylight’s design was engineered in-house and pre-assembled in our workshop to ensure a perfect fit while minimizing installation time.
By working closely with Richard Gerace, a skilled general contractor, and Céline Riard of CHIC Redesign, we were able to create a stunning living space for our clients. The detailed craftsmanship—from the mortise and tenon joinery to the precise installation of the glazing system—reflects our commitment to quality and the attention to detail our reputation is built upon.
