Photography by Caryn B. Davis Located in the Cornfield Point area of Old Saybrook along Long Island Sound, this project brought a classic, yet forgotten beach house back to life. Through a little detective work and some creative ingenuity, we restored and enhanced the exterior to it’s former glory and transformed the interior to a highly efficient and functional home all the while uplifting its quaint cottage charm. On the exterior, we recreated a wonderful, airy front porch with cozy bench seats that look out to the water. The white cedar shingle siding is pre-bleached with a subtle flair at the bottom and a delicate break at mid-elevation. The asphalt shingles are not only beautifully matched with the siding, but offer superior reflective qualities to dissipate the heat of the summer sun. On the interior, we joined the front seasonal porch with the family room to form a larger, open living and dining space with paneled walls and ceilings anchored by the original round stone fireplace. In the rear, we carefully crafted a galley kitchen and laundry space with an adjacent first floor master suite. The diminutive house and property posed multiple practical and regulatory challenges which were overcome by a strong team effort, due diligence, and a commitment to the process. John R. This new house respectfully steps back from the adjacent wetland. The roof line slopes up to the south to allow maximum sunshine in the winter months. Deciduous trees to the south were maintained and provide summer shade along with the home’s generous overhangs. Our signature warm modern vibe is made with vertical cedar accents that complement the warm grey metal siding. "A gathering place and information center on the town's central waterfront both for arriving cruise ship passengers (nearly 1 million a year from May-September) and for community functions year-round. A key node on the phased development of the waterfront promenade, a continuous pedestrian walkway along the waters' edge through the town's center from the most northerly cruise ship berth to a small boat harbor and fishing jetty about a mile to the south. The simple, linear, permeable plan invites entry from all sides, waterfront and townfront. The space is sheltered by a single gable roof structure of exposed Alaska yellow cedar and decking. Vestibules and entries are accented by lower open timber gable roof forms.The pavilion extends north and south embracing exterior spaces with sculpture, planting, and sitting and eating terraces of recycled wood pier decking that was replaced with concrete and steel dock structure. Visitor services, information, tours, and town history and information with graphic, electronic media, and personal interaction are housed in the structure. Indigenous materials, historic scale and form reflect the context of the town and waterfront maintaining and enhancing view sheds with public art and amenities."

Though this is the back of the property, it is indeed the main entry as well. Given that the other side of the home sits 15' above ground elevation, our client's desire was to design a space off the backside of the home that doesn't inhibit the entry for new visitors, but allows for a seamless outdoor living space off their kitchen/ living room. We achieved this balance by retaining a front walkwkay to the main entry using large 24" x 36" bluestone slabs in a running band through the new patio space. Visually the clean lines of this walkway lead visitors to the front entrance while also subtly defining the two seating areas of the new patio terrace. The reclaimed granite piers, Saratoga Granite Seating walls, and plantings provide further definition which truly enhance the sense of space! Needless to say, our clients were thrilled with the finished product!

This loft renovation, located in New York City's West Village, demonstrates a discrete addition placed into a context rather than a complete makeover of an entire space. Although modest in size, the existing loft has an exceptional feeling of openness, making it feel spacious and airy. In addition to adding supported gallery walls, the apartment has lighting that enhances their context. Paintings are framed by architectural elements that highlight their importance. Soffits are dropped to provide focused art lighting. In addition, columns are created to frame art work. The aerie is an ode to art.

This walk-in closet embodies the perfect blend of elegance and function. Outfitted with rich, dark-toned cabinetry, the space exudes a sense of luxury while maintaining a warm, grounded atmosphere. Each element—from the floor-to-ceiling storage towers to the precisely proportioned drawers—was custom-designed to meet the specific needs of the homeowners. Natural light filters in through a wide horizontal window, softening the depth of the cabinetry's finish and enhancing visibility throughout the space. The strategic placement of open shelving, hanging rods, and enclosed drawers ensures that everything from seasonal coats to accessories has a designated home. This smart zoning makes daily routines more efficient and transforms the closet into a space you actually enjoy using. The light oak flooring introduces a welcome contrast to the darker cabinetry, creating balance and preventing the space from feeling heavy. Overhead, a flush-mounted fixture provides even illumination, so the closet remains bright and functional at all hours. Every detail, from the hardware to the spacing between compartments, reflects thoughtful craftsmanship and precision planning. This home was built in an infill lot in an older, established, East Memphis neighborhood. We wanted to make sure that the architecture fits nicely into the mature neighborhood context. The clients enjoy the architectural heritage of the English Cotswold and we have created an updated/modern version of this style with all of the associated warmth and charm. As with all of our designs, having a lot of natural light in all the spaces is very important. The main gathering space has a beamed ceiling with windows on multiple sides that allows natural light to filter throughout the space and also contains an English fireplace inglenook. The interior woods and exterior materials including the brick and slate roof were selected to enhance that English cottage architecture. This modern farmhouse landscape project near Cheney, Washington was designed to create a cohesive, durable outdoor environment that complements the architecture while responding to Inland Northwest climate conditions. Phase One included full site grading, irrigation installation, topsoil placement, and hydroseed to establish a healthy, resilient lawn. Planting areas were thoughtfully designed to provide structure, seasonal interest, and long-term performance while maintaining defensible space principles for improved wildfire resilience. Existing Ponderosa pines were preserved to retain the character and scale of the property, and hardscape materials were selected for durability and low maintenance. Concrete curbing defines clean transitions between lawn and planting beds, while strategically placed landscape boulders anchor the design within the site’s natural context. Low voltage landscape lighting was integrated to enhance safety, highlight architectural elements, and extend usability into the evening hours. This project was intentionally designed with future phases in mind, including a detached shop, expanded driveway improvements, additional deciduous tree plantings along the drive, and expanded planting areas. By establishing a strong foundational layout in Phase One, the property can evolve over time while maintaining design cohesion.
